Hey i have a question. im currently building a Devil Z replica and i cant find a L28 engine. if you or anyone knows where i can get a hold of one please please let me know. Thanks
OK - new plugs and the flat spot is way better - but it's still like it's overfuelling from 4000 rpm to 5000 rpm and then the cam is working like a turbo from 5000 rpm onwards - feels like it wants to spin and pull to 7000 rpm - but I am not keen to revs it this hard....
the 3.1 stroker is notorious for having severe flat spots in the power band, *especially* if you have a radical cam. the problem is simple: if you choose venturis (chokes) large enough to enable a higher peak hp, then at low rpms the velocity of the air simply isn't fast enough: the carbs cant do their job (spray fuel evenly). it just ends up dripping/spilling into the head instead of atomizing. send me a message if you want to know more, else check out my dyno run on youtube...
Thanks Zred - the car has since been to Stewart Wilkins and it's been cured with interest added - she flies now -...
No flat spots at all with smooth power and torque curves from 1200 rpm all the way up to 180 RWHP at 6000 Rpm - I am in love!!!! - Can't wait for the next track day!
Stewart reckons there's more power to be had with a few more tweaks too... It's very hard to drive without putting the foot down = Phil needs some more self control (wait for the track day)
Hard car to get on a hoist... Checked basics- happily the plugs are fouled - so I think that lots of stop / start running have had a toll - so with a bit of luck and new plugs in tomorrow there will be no fiddling with carbies at all...! All the tips of the plugs seem to have been bent down a little....why? Must be for a reason... New One piece Sparco race seats are going in on Thursday.... Will test at the track on Sunday against a bunch of Ferraris!
I understand what you are saying - if i hit the pedal too hard in the mid rev range it bogs down a bit - like there is more fuel than spark - then above 5000 rpm i can give it full volume and it really kicks in hard - I'm not brave enough or silly enough to go past 6000 rpm
Sweet ride, say it on ebay (pricey but worth it from what i can see), thats pretty much how mine is being built at the moment (flared stroked although mine has a full cage)! Awesome cars!
It arrived in Sydney today - drove it - ....Wow!!!! This thing is a weapon ready for the track! I couldn't believe how much power such an old normally aspirated engine can generate.... it's quicker than the Porsche 911 we have in stock. Bucket loads of torque and it pulls smoothly from 1500 rpm ... Sounds amazing. Quickshift gearbox, stiff suspension. This is a truly awesome machine. Carbies need balancing as there is a slight flatspot at 4000 rpm
What is the flatspot??? I think you are right - it's not the carbies. My concern is that it has been running on 112 octane fuel in Japan - I put Octane booster and it is better but not cured. I am thinking race fuel - or retune the whole thing for 98 octane. The tripple carbie thing sems to be a lost art here - I've had quite a few well known tuners shake their heads including a well known carbie shop who said it will requre a dyno!
hard to tell with out playing with myself, but it could be the setup (if it still happens with quality fuel), ie: accel plunger! Solex carbs are abit tricky (ive got webers), but they are very similar (just harder to get parts)! A dyno would certainly help get the carbs setup up perfect, with a car like that, it is more than worth it in my opinion!
I used to balance mine by ear & feel, but its fiddly, bad for your hearing, and road test tuning is not going to go down well with the boys in blue!
Oh also there is an art in itself to driving with these sorts of carbs! Its not like efi where you just mash the pedal and away you go! You need to have a very subtle foot to caress the pedal, gentle squeezing as you go! Above 4-5k you can get away with mashing it! Hope that helps!
hey phil they dont have a kakimoto exhaust made for this car, what car did you pick this exhaust from? sounds really good. also beutiful car. is it for sale? thanks
These are Edward Lee's Cars. The orange one owner 1971 240Z is right here to see. The red Stroker Fairlady in this vid will be arriving at Port Kembla this week. Please come in to see it! The silver car is sold to an Edward Lee's client....

oh that flatspot isnt the balancing (but these will need regular balancing anyway)!

I don't know th eparticulars of the exhaust - car is advertised on our website - but it's really a big toy for me - I can't wait till it arrives!
Asitisinheaven 2 years ago
Have confirmed - it is a genuine Kakimoto exhaust system connected to a big set of extractors/headers wrapped in heatproof material

i think saying '@ edward lee's' is a bit wrong.....since all the ones you advertise are still in japan.
