  • The Mclaren MP4-12C should of been car of the year!

  • .... on the same lines, it's not pronounced as Volkswagen, but it's Folkswagen.

The "V" is pronounced as "F" ... fffoo.

  • @SeanManks it's also not wagen, but vargen.

  • GOD i hate when they say passaaaat its PASSAT

  • work on them for 5 years they are junk

  • Nice one, my 2.0T VW is an awesome ride, very reliable and fun, I lol at the haters commenting on this video (with no little to no real basis for their opinions)

  • that right vw are always dead in the water

  • lol vw are shit boxs

  • @methodical666 jealous retard

  • Vw engines are even better than BMWs they make strong cars

  • fuck this piece of shit. i saw the 20 minute video. id have the chrysler 300 in an instant

  • @btevoxboy6835 amen brother

  • @btevoxboy6835 the passat does better than the Fuel Guzzler chrysler 300 in safety and performance

  • @googleccd079 yeah dont forget the amazing diesels!!

  • Boring body style to me, don't expect good resale value on VWs, got burnt from them twice. Car of the year, seriously?

  • It looks like a 90's car!... I don't like it

  • I hate how VW has way better engines out there but they choose to let North America have the shorter end of the stick. Why can't WE have TSI twincharged engines instead of a dumb 2.5 five cylinder?

  • @EgregiouslyPutrid that five cylinder is really not that bad for what it is - the base engine option. it has a wide and flat powerband, it's responsive and efficient AND ITS FREE.

  • @g1981c its not that i abhor the engine, but I don't like the idea that Volkswagen doesn't treat North America with the same goodies as other markets like Japan and Europe. Sure there maybe more people like you that are ok with the 5 cylinder and that's fine. But I just wish we got some of the stuff that doesn't come here like the Scirocco and the twincharger engine (optional engine in the future, maybe?)

  • @EgregiouslyPutrid why would VW treat US as if it was EU or Japan when it isn't ? US is not the same. people in US are fatter than in EU and both fatter and taller than in Japan. Europeans use turbos because it allows smaller more fuel efficient engines which makes sense there because in EU gas is very expensive. In US gas is cheaper - makes no sense to bother with turbos. VW is not dumb - they know what they're doing. World's no 1 car market is now China - and they get different cars too.

  • @g1981c well fine, point taken. but regarding the scirocco, one can dream

  • @EgregiouslyPutrid

VW's are by far one of the most overrated badges on the market, their reliability took a hit in 2011 too, your not missing much.

  • It looks to bland and yyyyyyyaaaaaaawwwwwwwnnnnnnn...........BORING.

  • @MrZLeroy92 then get a sonata

  • @contractki11er LOL why would you say that?

  • @contractki11er I actually would rather a Sonata if i didn't own a 300ZX Twin Turbo lol.

  • If you havent driven the new passat, then you have no reason to dislike this.

  • Hard to think a Passat would defeat every vehicle as Motor Trend 2012 Car of the Year. There are contenders like Lexus, Mercedes, Jaguar, Cadillac, Toyota, GM. Every Criteria involving the automobile experience should be used to determine car of the year. Wonder how they do it.

  • @heartlessvietboy I think it was a good decision, Not everyone can afford a Lex, Merc, Jag, or Caddy. And not everyone is looking for a track car or anything over 30K.

  • Don't get me wrong. Volkswagen makes great cars. My uncle drove a Volkswagen Rabbit back in the late 80's. Good body structure and dependability.

  • I'm sure almost EVERYONE who disliked this has never even driven the new passat.

  • Who would buy a Passat over a 300? Motor Trend fumbled this 1.

  • @franchize31x i would. have u been in a new passat? or driven one? they are fantastic. i rented a 300 much like the model in this test. didnt like it much. i felt like i was driving a barge.

  • When you actually drive and use a passat, then youll get a huge sense why its motortrend's 2012 car of the year

  • @13sfaustino Any thoughts on VW's reliability promises for this new generation of Passats? I like this car, but a history of mechanical horror stories has me worried. I've narrowed my choices down to these 4 cylinder 2012's- Passat, Camry SE, Optima, Impreza. What do you think? Anyone?

  • @ericj305 The ones in built in Mexico have had many problems-not that the ones built in Germany and elsewhere have been all stellar, but at this point,we don't know how reliable it will be.I bought this car over a month ago, love it.Just hope the new plant in Tenessee can make a difference in boosting reliability. The car has a wonderful fit and finish though.

  • @AvtoMashna Hi, thanks so much for your reply. The new Tenn plant is encouraging, and I've read really great things about quality control there and the consequent fit and finish on this new Passat. I also really like the way it looks, very sharp/European-looking. But you're right, we won't know anything meaningful about its reliability for quite a while. Man, I just don't know if I want to take a chance...or pick up Camry, ugh. Thanks again.

  • @ericj305 none of them...

  • @completelymad Any alternative suggestions?

  • Basically a VW Jetta with a longer wheel base.

  • Why didn't they just pick another Camry. Oh wait, they did.

  • sinse the redesign i thought this car looked cheap and dated right away. Im sure it rides nice and performs well but i just cant belive anyone would choose this over a 300 limited with 290hp and an 8 speed automatic. Not to mention all the options u get with the limted. the 300 is HUGE and u still can manage to get 31MPG from it, pluss all the luxury. aw well. im excited for next year!

  • Perfect choice in every regard. Good going, Motor Trend for sticking to the basics and not being caught up in the "flare and excitement" of some of these trendy mid size sedans that are on the market. This Passat will hold true. Watch.

  • Check the previous story about how MT voted their Car of the Year, and how close it is between the VW Passat and Chrysler 300. It was 3rd place votes that took it over the top.

  • Super Car at a Super Price. Finally VW got the Passat right!

  • Too bad it is such a boring car. Sure, is has all those qualities, but i cant get excited about it. Maybe its because over here its the typucal car for a copier salesman and you see one in every street.

  • @kukelz Its true..if you are looking to get excited about your ride, don't get a passat. If you are looking for a quality engineered, nice handling, comforable, responsive, built in America, value, then this is one to consider.

  • at 1:30 I thought I saw a 3 series...

  • I saw this one coming. When it beat the Camry in everything, it was quite obvious

  • @Silversunstaley.. Jeep is owned by Chrysler

  • @TheCrimsonLantern Yeah, I know, but Jeep does their own thing, otherwise it'll be complete shit. Still, if I had a choice between a Jeep and a Subaru, i'd go Subaru.

  • Passat? I would rather invest in a pair of running shoes....

  • American cars are shit, the only American company worth anything is Jeep. The new Passat looks good, is fast, and fuel efficient (TDI especially). Volkswagen's track record has improved drastically since the 70's, and they're more reliable than any bullshit Chrysler tries to throw at you.

  • @silversunstaley LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL. you my friend are very uneducated about company ownership lol

  • @silversunstaley 100% agree.

  • It's also important to remember that the available TDI model is likely the biggest single reason why this award was given to the Passat. Quite simply, for under $30,000, you won't find another non-hybrid, large sedan with a quality interior and fun-to-drive dynamics that can return over 40mpg (a number that has been historically underestimated for VW diesels).

  • CTS-V should've been car of the year

  • Chatanooga smells like shit

  • I have the new golf and it is by far the best car I have ever owned. And my car history isn't a bad won. It blows the roof off my second car (a 2008 Honda accord) and has shown me how great a car could really be! All of the other people hating on this award and going for something that isn't German should learn something about a high quality car! And all of you the say the new passat is cheap, then get out of your Chevy cobalt and step into a German car to see what soft touch material is like!!

  • How did they get out of the car and not get their shoes wet?

  • Comment removed

  • Hyundai fanboys and VW haters all over the place ...

Too bad that practically none of you guys hating here are actually in the position to buy a car like this. In fact many of you kids here probably don't even have a license yet, let alone an own car. So how about holding back your statsheet 'knowledge' and growing up? Then you might realize that there's much, much more to a car than 0-60 times or some stupid (unprecise) reliability reports.

  • you've got to be kidding me -_- this plastic cheap boring car is not the best car this year... well VW have with making the new camry... boring and for old people.

  • @matman142 How is it boring? It's the best riding and handling car of all mid-size sedans out there. And whole lot better than a boring and ugly Camry.

  • @ratmtbola its very boring... i LOVED the old passat and my dad owned an 04 1.8t passat, the thing is brilliant but this is just more plastic and worse engines... yeah the VR6 is a cool touch but why forfeit a fuel efficent monster in the 2.0t for a gas sucking VR6? the handling and ride is great yeah but so is the camry. thats all the camry is, great ride, cheap interior, forgettable looks and boring. this new passat is just that, forgettable..

  • @matman142 Hmm I'm not your opinion at all. Only thing I'd agree on is that the last gen Passat was better. But hey, that's what happens when you cut costs by, what, $7k?

I don't think that the Camry handles as good as the Passat does, not even nearly. Ride quality, yes, but handling? Nah. And I don't think that the looks are forgettable and boring. It's stylish, sleek and not too overdone or futuristic like some modern Hyundais. It's timeless. It'll still look good and modern in 10 years.

  • @ratmtbola see you just made my point thought, since when has VW ever made money off of cutting corners and costs on their cars? they are the cheap alternative to german luxury that middle class families could afford but now they have lowered the quality of their cars and its better in motortrends eyes? i personally find it ridiculous that the last gen passat wasn't even close to car of the year but this watered down cheaper version of the passat wins... just puzzles me

  • @matman142 I think the reason why this year's Passat won is simply because it's more affordable than the old one. Of course the old one was better in quality and luxury. But it was just a little too expensive for many average families shopping for a midsize sedan. By lowering the price the new Passat got more accessable and entered the very lucrative midsize family sedan market. And, apparently, it's still better than all the other midsize sedans, even though it's on the same pricing level now.

  • It's me again. Angus says: "It's one of the best in it's segment." WHAT? If it's the car of the year, it ought to be the BEST in it's segment? Otherwise, how? A dollar to a dime says it doesn't even win the inevitable forthcoming 2012 Family Sedan Comparo. Whatever MT. No wonder your subscriptions are under $10 now. Who would pay for this? Oh yeah, you guys are paid by the manufacturers. I forgot.

  • yeah.. this sucks.. the video is just as boring as the Passat. VW had a chance to keep up with the rest of the segment nearly 15 years ago and they didn't. Unfortunately the US public forgot about VW, and will contintue too, regardless of the award. I've been to 5 Auto Show in the past 10 years (Detroit)..and walked right past VW each time. It's going to take more the a 40mpg diesel to gain a foot hold in the US sales world. They better think Next Gen. style and drivetrain & try again in 2yrs

  • @DJBrothaIvan 'next gen. style and drivetrain'?

Then why are some of the best selling cars in the US like the Toyota Camry a) fucking ugly and boring to look at and b) have an ancient drivetrain. I mean, it's 2011 and you can still get Corollas and Camrys with a freaking 4spd auto. I think VW abandoned thoes trannys more than a century ago ...

  • Did he actually say the Passat met the criteria(er) for advancement of design? Really? It looks like a 2004 Ford FiveHundred! If that's advancement of design, then I'm Picasso.

  • advancement in design? you say that because it's a volkswagen. the car looks like a 1:1 copy of the euro spec kia magentis from 5 years ago and you say advancement in design? i don't understand how can the most average and lame, the most bland car be picked over anything else. it's just a basic car, nothing is special about it. it even looks like an old kia. the best things don't need ads. they're known for being good, not known for being known. everything else needs advertising to sell.

  • At least the winner isn't a Hyundai.

It is painful to hear Angus pronounce it as "Hee-un-die".

  • Those people who hate VW Passat are employees of TOYOTAAA, HONDAAA, HYUNDAIII, FORDDD, CHEVYYY. Atm, in 189 dislikes, 1 dislike came from Toyoda ( not Toyota )

  • @mrlonelyfk iiimmmmm nooooottttt aaaaaa empoyeeeeee offfff annnnnyyyyy offfffff thhheeesseeee ccccaaaaaaarrrrrrr cccccccooooooommmmmmmpppppppaaaaaaannnnnniiiiiieeeeeessssssssss

  • Wrong!!!!!! The car of the year is, with no doubt, the range rover evoque.

  • @ianfoimbora motor trend awarded the Range Rover Evoque the SUV of the year award.

  • @ianfoimbora That won their Sport Utility of the Year.

  • Camry won those comparisons. Everybody knows that......

  • Yeah german enginering . Way better than those local American garbage we have . They are getting better , but still far away . I prefer the cc though , more pretty

  • This lame ass cheap ass car won? Wow what we're they smoking.

  • this car is garbage

  • We recenty traded in our 2006 Passat 3.6 4Motion for a bigger vehicle because our family simply has outgrown it. I must say it was one of the best cars in terms of build quality, power, and fun to drive factor. I agree with others that say they did dull the styling a bit, but looks are secondary to me. I would have considered buying another if I didnt need a 7 passanger anymore.

  • Hell yeah it deserves it, IT FLOATS!!!!!

  • that grille is friggin HORRIBLE!!!

  • No surprise here MT practically announced it from the car debut.

  • My favorite part is , the car is floating on water!!!

  • As everyday vehicles are depreciating assets the New Passat Tdi will be the most valuable vehicle in Canada. Go to any VW store here and see how many you can find. If you want to take granny to church on Sunday go buy your domestic or Asian vehicles. Love my GTI.

  • well the passat won at every aspect u haters should stop complaining

  • I love the windmills...only one was turning...

  • The styling on a 6 series may not be or everyone, but the styling for this vw isn't for anyone. You could take the vw off, slap a honda H one it and show it to a soccer mom and she wouldn't know the difference. It looks completly forgetable. At least if it was butt ugly there'd still be someone out there that would love it. Take the nissan juke for example. I love its uglyness. But who could honestly say they love the way this car looks?

  • @pp20dfpepino. Yeah, what You said.

  • Lo que hacen por dinero... VW es lo peooor ... ALL is SHIT VW

  • I think the Camry Hybrid would have been a better car to take the title...

  • If they aren't going to let a $60k car win on the basis its not a practical price, then why even put it in the running to begin with?? Its not the car of the year competition, Its the best car under $35k competition.

  • interesting...... i heard the new jetta is god awful.

  • What nonsense. European cars are unreliable. You'll buy a Passat and it will break down before you even get home.

Buy Japanese (or South Korean) or prepare to put your mechanic's kids through college.

  • @moderatesunited While there is some truth to your statement, the reason that honda and toyota have achieved such great reliability statistics (hyundai now too) is through their customer care programs. Ive worked on enough latemodel cars to know that I see an almost equal distribution of serious upfucks on both foreign and domestic cars. The biggest difference is the price of replacement parts. The biggest problem with the euroboxes is they are a total bitch to work on.

  • Stupid kids think the most expensive car is going to win, but they haven't even looked or listened to what the judges are judging the car on.

  • blah!!!

  • I like cars

  • The interior is very pretty but the exterior seems like a freshened Chevy Impala... A prettier Impala that is!

  • Great job Volkswagen! The new Passat is a game changer. Where did you go wrong with the new Jetta?

  • Nice job V-Dub

  • This car is shit, are they saying this car is better then an A7 or CLS? or C63 AMG or 6-series? WTF

  • @Jetsrule192 Yes. Motortrend doesn't only test 0-60 times. This car is better than all those cars in practicality, gas mileage, and price.

  • are you guys missing a chromosome??its seems that no one can like anything any more. Most of you fucks havnt even driven it so shut you FUCKING MOUTHS.

  • people need to stop hating. This car is obviously amazing to win this award, its not all about being ``american made`` or fastest 0-60. Sigh, real car guys will understand why this car won. It`s the perfect balance :)

  • @Lambo6fo +1. It's amazing how much people will decry a car for being picked over another just because it isn't as fast, as good looking, or they just don't like the brand. Most of those complaining have likely never driven the new Passat and would rather stay ignorant than see for themselves just why its redesign created a drastically better car.

  • @R1COtheB3AST Yeah, ok, so your a VW expert huh? Maybe you should bocome an auto tech, work for VW for a few years. Then you would truly know how much of a piece of shit all VW's are. If motor trend were a cock, it would be in your mouth. Do you have an opinion on how they named the Volt car of the year last year? Hey, i can tell you, it cuz they were paid off!

  • @cowmilky I'm guessing "advancement in design" and "wide appeal" really don't mean anything to you? The Chevy Volt won because it broke the mold for hybrids, much like the Passat has broken the mold for the mid-size sedan class. Unlike a Prius or Insight, the Volt actually isn't an eyesore and provides a level of enjoyment to drive. I find the Passat exterior design as boring as the next guy, but in terms of interior styling and driving dynamics, it's miles above others in its class.

  • time to unsubscribe from this shit

  • I was choosing between this and Merc C 300, I picked the Merc

  • KIA K5 Turbo is a better advancement in design with ALL of the other 5 points.

  • why are so many people butt hurt about MT's decision?

  • Really? I think the styling has no emotion, the interior shows no design and I see compacts with more design. Where's the ingenuity?

  • Bro, lyke howwws DA CAR LYKE WALKINGZ ON DE WATA!? DUDE I'M SO STONED. HA HA HA

  • Mind-numbing. Boredom. Yawn. Passat.

You see where I'm going with this...........?

  • Comment removed

  • Horrible choice mt.....i would never buy that electrical hazard...... Id stay american

  • Why are they in water???

  • It could be worse guys... the Camry, Prius, PT Cruiser, Malibu, and Taurus have all won this award.

  • Passet looks like a very decent car. I'd prefer it over a Korean or US made car any day. Much better than a Camry for the driving enthusiast and excellent fuel economy with lots of space. Well done VW.

  • The rear of the car reminds me off a Saab.

  • roomiest cabit was designed to accomodate fattiest nation on earth - Americans lol

  • @whatever04811 Except America isn't the fattest nation on Earth, look your facts up.

  • Its not a great value considering you have to sell it when the warranty is up if you don't wanna go bankrupt from repairs.

  • I'd take the 300 pentastar 8 speed over this wrong wheel drive bore any day.

  • Yep - I'm a retard because my OPINION matches most others. Your so smart.

  • Wow. Seriously? I could understand the volt, respected the gtr, but this makes no sense at all. Considering just a few months back MT rated the car as just average. Big mistake on part of MT. Good luck selling these magazines in January. Im sure VW is going to make some BS commercials on this now.

  • @EasternJ84 God you're a fucking retard, the car met the criteria the best so it is obviously the best.

  • @EasternJ84 car companies pay motortrend for getting the title, it's a good way to advertise. But seriously the Sonata should've won...

  • It's a baby Audi A6 like the jetta is like the A4

  • Motor trend is getting more and more pitiful. They just change the so called ?!#!?#^%# criteria to get the one they want to win. Same as they did for suv of the year. Only thing their good for is video content on mute. And most videos are so boring like the one with new jag. Lookmit goes around a mountain road 65 times at 45 mph.lol wow so exciting

  • Motor trend is getting more and more pitiful. They just chang

  • Motortrend made a mistake, the video was supposed to be titled loses and not wins

  • lets just hope that car is somewhat reliable... my co-worker has a jetta (08 or 09) and that shit keeps breaking all the time... Just last week he replaced ignition coils, sparks, wires and few more things.

The reason was because it started smoking like shit and having no power at all.

  • the german camry. nuff said. it's not bad yet it's not good. It's like a compromise. the car has no soul or lack thereof

  • You only have to watch the video of how they came to this decision -- or the fact that the fucking Chrysler 300 came in SECOND FUCKING PLACE -- to see how ridiculous this is.

    This award is a joke.

  • How is like fourth place vw won? They should take the top two tied cars and do some more testing and then make up their mind and vote again and see which car comes on top. This test pretty much has no credibility because when picking between cars you cant have sports cars and vans in the same category to compete, they are in different class but motortrend somehow thinks it's fair. RIDICULES!!!!and I'm subscribed to this channel? btw passat is a nice car but picking a car like this

  • stupid video...spoiled everything.

  • I'd rather have a Chrysler 300S!

  • of course the passat won when motortrend's editor-in-chief has a retarded haircut so it makes sense then that they would make a retarded choice for a winner

  • I ment R32 MKV

  • Id rather build a MKV R35

  • I can't believe the Honda Accord won car of the year?!

  • They jedi mind tricked the judges.

  • if I will rate it, i would say

    Looks 5/10

    Performance 5/10

    Noise 5/10

    Price 5/10

    Safety 5/10

so, to get the COTY title.. you must narrow it as possible to be REGULAR CAR!

  • I literally laughed when I read the title. Trust me, Europe is loaded with Volkswagens and most of them just plainly suck, especially in terms of reliability. VAG excels in one thing and that's marketing.

  • Ugly car dont wast your money

  • not agree.

  • Does a Darth Vader Bobblehead come with a purchase. VW would have to commemorate this WIN!

  • yahoo.com just picked passat for worst used car to buy.

Reliability of VW has been well known as worst in the US for years.

  • What a big FAIL. VW sends a cheapened, dumb-downed less thrilling, lower performing Passat to the US and we reward them with an award?

Efficiency? The base petrol gets 31MPG highway while Camrys+Accords are well over 35MPG. Safety? The vanilla Camry outshines in the passive equipment department. Value? The Sonata & Optima win there.

The new Focus better met your own criteria. What a fail!

  • Does half of you commenting have an extra chromosome? The man clearly said all the criteria needed to win this award, yet you people still bitch?

    1) Advancement in design - (completely new generation)

    2) Engineering excellence - (Its a VW and German)

    3) Fuel efficiency - (TDI with 40+mpg)

    4) Safety - (VW...)

    5) Value - (Its a Passat, KBB that shit if you want)

    6) Performance of intended function - (TDI and 280HP FSI V6 with DSG Tranny)

The Passat met all of these, thats why it won. Jesus...

  • @medz91xc I think you have a Passat xD !!

  • @medz91xc

    BMW 6 series

    1) Completely new generation!

    2)Its a BMW and German

    3)New Diesel get 50!!!mpg

    4) its a BMW

5)Cost less than its comp. MB SL and Maserati gt

    6) 0-60 in under 5.5 over 300 hp and 50 mpg highway with diesel

The 6 series would have been a much better Car of the Year, the Passat is a box on wheels... Get real, Motor Trend has lost it...

  • @tjverr12 thank u

  • @tjverr12

I never said I didnt like the F12 6 series, I'm an M Car enthusiast and love BMW. But the sheer price of even the DIESEL 6 series, not the 4.4 TT, is just insane. I love the looks, but too be honest at that price, I'd buy me the new F10 M5.

The 6 is just at that dead zone between cars like the GTR, ZO6, and any Porsche in the high 80k range. Theres just a lot of negatives that go along with the positives of the 6 series. The car of the year award should be a car made for the masses.

  • @tjverr12 You'd expect that from a $100,000 vehicle.I think you're forgetting the Passat is $20,000-32,000.

I bought this car over a month ago, love it.Just worried about VW reliability.I think the Passat deserved it,but with the Focus selling like it is,I though it would have won.

  • @AvtoMashna Ford didn't pay its Motor Trend fees this year. sounds like a joke but honestly, It isn't.

  • @tjverr12 You forgot the part about value. There is no long-term value comparison when a car costs $84,000. There simply isn't a *logical* justification for paying that much for a car. Especially when considering there are cars that are faster, more fuel efficient, safer, and more useful than a BMW 6 Series.

  • @R1COtheB3AST if its to expensive why is it even considered, this isn't the economy car of the year it is THE CAR of the year and the BMW does have value when compared to its competition, How are you not blown away by the beautiful styling, breathe taking performance , and amazing efficiency of the new 6 series. I be honest the Id rather have an Accord over that crappy Passat.
