You need quite a lot of power, because you only hit the very edge of the ball, u can do it without power but it wont go very far, you are in escence slicing the ball, but with more power, and striking accross the face of the ball

You definitely need a certain minimum speed, but no superhuman power. It is more about the angle at which you make contact with the ball, and the follow-through of the foot. (By the way, I am no expert on football .. this is just my personal intuition).
