God Bless her, she has such a positive outlook on life, we should all take a page from her book. There are many stories like hers, lets not forget about our disabled young men & women coming home from this senseless war our "failed" Gov have gotten us into in Iraq and Afgan... Funny! I thought Obama said he was bringing them home in less then a year, hmmm just sent another 20 thousand over there. This is not what the American people signed him up for. In any event pray for all of them.
Sendkin, if we had not gone to war, WE would have been senseless. Appeasing terrorists would've been the worst possible thing to do in the 9/11 situation. If I recall correctly, didn't the French, British, and Americans appease Hitler's wishes before World War II? Yeah and we all know what happened after that...
1940's Normandy era was a different situation. I agreed with going into Afgan after 911 and if we couldn't flush out Ben Laden in a year or so lets come home. As far as Iraq, Iraq had nothing to do with 911 therefore it is unjustified in my book. My Dad was in WWII in the 82nd then the 101st Airborn and I feel much of America's involvement in WWII was justified. We have been over in Iraq and Afgan for 10 years now, we have gotten nowhere fast and, CONT>
2. its time commitment has surpass the Vietnam war. Its time to come home especially since this country is broke and China, CHINA is financing both wars right now... Have we no pride anymore because we certainly have no more money. I can not stand to look at all our young men and women coming home with TBI Traumatic Brain Injury, something that the WWII GI's didn't have much of. TBI is 500 to 1 that of WWII or Vietnam. Its a shame and we have nothing to show for it, CONT >
we also have this Communist Obama admin bringing our Navy Seals up on charges in Military Tribunals... Our own Gov has turned on our Servicemen, its time to come home.
I totally agree with your statement about the situation in Iraq, but Im glad somebody besides me realizes that the war in Afghanistan was justified. However, I still think the Taliban/al Queda groups are worth fighting against. As far as getting nowhere, the govt tells us that they've made progress, but who can trust that dictator anymore? cont...
The Navy SEAL thing, thank you for mentioning that, because i think that it's just fucked up to charge your own soldiers for crimes that were probably never committed. Obama is probably using them as some fake example of how he "weeds out the bad people" involved with our govt/military. The TBI statistic is sad indeed, but is it possible that the statistic is flawed? cont...
What I mean is, do you think that there were thousands of soldiers in WWII and Vietnam who suffered from TBI and were never diagnosed? I think with today's advances in the field of traumatic brain injury, it is highly likely that we can better diagnose the injuries than we could back then. Overall, it seems you and I both agree that the whole war situation is a mess.
The TBI stats vary a bit but not by much however you bring up a good point about diagnosis however you really dont need such advanced technology to diagnosis it. Person gets half thier skull cap blown off, person cant talk, coma, brain swelling and when they wake they just smile at everything he or she looks at, person can no longer walk or has seizures... Even in WWII they had the tech to diagnosis it, CONT>
B. maybe not as high tech as today but we really haven't come to much further in the studies of the brain since the 1940's, thats not to say we didn't come a long way its just to say we have hit a lot of road blocks along the way being the brain is so delicate which makes the discoveries and/or advancements go really slow. MRI has helped 10 fold but has done little for cures. TBI is very high in Iraq, you have to remember the enemies main tool are IED's, RPG's and Trip wire so that , CONT>
usually leads to loss of limbs and major head injury. Sure they had mines in WWII but it wasn't the main tool or only tool of the enemy. IED's probably out number the mines of WWII 100 to 1 and thats why TBI is so high.
Harvard isn't the fastest crew...cal is....but she is a true warrior. Good for you Allison. Cox 'em to the finish. I'll see you at eastern sprints. Anon coach
There's no comparing to the woman in this story, who clearly stands on her own merits. If any of us lost something so crucial at such an age, who's to say what the consequence would be. I guarantee not all would make it to 47. Some would opt for a lesser existence. For some people, death is a better alternative than life. It's amazing to see folks that revel in their moments against unimaginable misfortune, while others curse every second of their privilege. Pure amazing.
Great story, great coxswain. I know a few people in that video, and I always like to see crew getting exposure. That said, if the Harvard heavyweight boat wants to claim that they're the fastest, even in America, they'd better stop losing to Brown. HOTC would be a good time.
I actually know a rower in that boat, and the previous person is so right about a good coxwain. People don't realize what a mental sport this is, where in other sports you shut down the mind to things like running and moving, rowing is all about making every single movement precise and technical. You have to think about every single one of the 2000 or so strokes that you do in a piece. If your mind wanders for a little bit, you're guranteed to be off.
its cuz the thumbnails for the videos are always the frame that is at half of the video so if a vid is 30 seconds long the thumnail wuld be the frame at 15 sec, and in this case it was a pic of a guy
its because youtube automatically takes whatever image is showing exactly halfway through the video. if you want a certain pcture to appear as your thumbnail just put that picture right in the middle of your video and ta-dah....its there!
Very inspiring, but genetically she is blessed with a positive personality. It's not always that way. My sister lost most of her eyesight at 13 years old, and basically for her, it just sucks and still sucks to this day. There is tons of bigotry toward blindness, and my sister, who is a genius, does her best at 47 years old but will always feel the weight emotionally. Life isn't always fair.
Life is never fair. It's too complicated and intricate to be fair. Sometimes it seems that there is only consequence. I'm sad for a girl that lost her eyesight at 13. Old enough to remember what was lost but too young to be able to find comfort in experience, and memories. It seems your sister has one thing. A caring sibling that I'd bet loves her. One that considers her a genius. One that empathizes deeply with her plight. Although, I wonder if she actually does lack a positive personality.
As a rower, I can tell you, a good coxwain can have a JV boat kick Varsity's ass by 3 boatlengths. I know, I stroked the boat that did it, and watched my friend Steph's eyes as she got us across that finish. Rowing is the single greatest sport on the planet, and it would be impossible without the hardcore cox's that make us attack that catch and finesse the finish. Leg drive ladies, leg drive.
The reality is that our world is filled with similar inspiring stories but our press , which is a reflection of ourselves, gives so much more coverage to the sorid, the perverted and the violent.
There's not much that the school administration has done in the past few years that has impressed me but this is a great step in the right direction.
Incredible. This lovely young spirit does wonders for Harvard's stodgy profile; though I suspect Swarthmore would be a better fit.Obviously, all with any semblance of balance are inspired by her and wish her nothing but full development of her talents-and hope that whatever presently afflicts her is cured or fixed with the wonders of modern medicine. That aside, anyone care to say FUTURE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES material.God Bless, and thank you. She's beautiful inside and out.
A nice story, but I would like to add the name of John Hartigan, a coxwain who had an extreme spinal deformity and who participated in _two_ Olympic Games.
That is really great. I had a bad car accident myself a couple years ago and i couldn´t walk for a couple weeks after having 2 surgeries. Since then i never could do the sports again that i was used to and my hole life changed. But this is great. ur strength gives me strength
