Next to The Avengers I want to see this more than any film in 2012, maybe more. Just breathtaking and Taylor Kitsch has developed into an incredible actor of substance. This looks phenomenal.
@The100thAttempt Yeah, Disney = less violence, and none of of Deja Thoris's gorgeous naked boobs, which are the "trademarks" of John Carter series. :P
@MrFidle Yes it is based off of the first book of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Barsoom series. He wrote 10 books about John Carter of Mars. The first 5, due to their age are considered “public domain.” They are as follows.. A Princess of Mars (1912). The Gods of Mars (1914), The Warlords of Mars (1918), Thuvia, Maid of Mars (1920) and The Chessmen of Mars (1922), I'd recommend reading them.
I thought Taylor Kitsch was great in "The Covenant"...and in "Friday Night Lights". He seems like the kind of guy who want take any shit off anyone...I like that.
I suspect that this is disney's next pirates of the carribian, they will try to milk this for everything its got. I loved the books and I hope that they did this as well as they could.
Read the books, they are public domain now, they are fantastic and its because of them that we have all this science fiction today, before cursing this, go read, don't make foolish comments.
A great movie that I predict will be underrated, because it challenges the growing illiterate world and its lack of imagination. Just how many do not see the inspiration these John Carter novels were to the less-than imaginative movies of today is beyond me. For that reason I fear this movie will be overlooked because it will truly challenge the mind of today; something most have no desire for.
when i saw the pic of the vid in my subscription box i thought the man was caleb from pretty little lair. this is why i whatch the vid but no caleb. -.-
BOOOOOOO!!!! Dejah Thoris coulda been wearing a bikini and she'd be overdressed for this movie but this....? Yeesh she might as well have been wearing a Muslim hijab. Thanks Disney! Nitwits.
Generally i'd say over half the films that say they're 3D go over the top on focusing on the 3D aspects, which generally adds up to some lacking in action, depth and storytelling.
@alig1994 No tron is the digital computer world version of this...If you factor in the book for this was written over 50 years before tron was released
@alig1994 actually, Tron is a futuristic computer version of this, seeing as John Carter of Mars was orginally a series of novels written by Edgar Rice Burroughs several decades before Tron was ever thought up.
@alig1994 Actually it is based on a seireis of books by Edgar Rice Burroughs. This is actully the 100th anniversay of the first book coming out. Way before Tron.
@alig1994 John Carter on Mars was one of the original sci fi stories. It was written in 1912 by Edgar Rice Burroughs who also wrote the original Tarzan series. Saying this is like Tron is like saying Lord of the Rings is like any fantasy story that came after it. If anything Tron is a version of this movie.
@Chrisfs59 1911. "Tarzan of the Apes" came out in 1912. "A Princess of Mars" [originally titled "Under the Moons of Mars"] was Edgar Rice Burroughs' first major book. Origianlly published in 1911. Pity that "John Carter" couldn't have come out this year, [one-hundreth anniversary and all that]. Still, one-hundred first anniversary is better than NO-hundred first anniversary! Looks good to me.
NOPE. not a wild west version of tron. John Carter is Classic Science Fiction - There are not many Sword wielding, death-ray equipped, four armed Green men or Flying Ships in the Wild West. The introduction is in the West then (pardon the pun) jumps right to the planet Mars.
The era that the film is set, is just after the American Civil War. 1870's odd. This Story was written in the VERY early 1900's and first published in 1917. Written by a man named Edgar Rice Burroughs.
@alig1994 John Carter first appeared in A Princess of Mars, the first Burroughs novel set on the fictionalized version of Mars that the author dubbed "Barsoom". Written between July and September 28, 1911, it was serialized as Under the Moons of Mars in the February to July 1912 issues of the magazine All-Story and first published in book form in October 1917.
@alig1994 Carter reappeared in subsequent volumes of the series, most prominently in the second, The Gods of Mars (1918), the third, The Warlord of Mars (1919), the eighth, Swords of Mars (1936), the tenth, Llana of Gathol (1948), and the eleventh, John Carter of Mars (1964). John Carter is also a major secondary character in the fourth volume, Thuvia, Maid of Mars (1920), and the ninth, Synthetic Men of Mars (1940).
