"How about getting off your ass and warning the traffic behind you that there's a 50 foot gap in the road."
How do you suppose she should she have gone about doing that? Run into the freeway? T-bone her car across the lanes? Stand at the side of the road flailing her arms wildly? Cardboard sign? Semaphore flags? Sign language?
Eastbound drivers stuck on the lower deck between the collapse and Yerba Buena Island were routed up to the upper deck and westward back to San Francisco. A miscommunication made by emergency workers at Yerba Buena Island routed some of the drivers the wrong way; they were directed to the upper deck where they drove eastward toward the collapse site. It's funny to see how people comment on here about this the same way I did back then. Mixed views-I feel like that lady should have done more to flag them down, but I don't think she knew that there was a gap in the bridge. Now that we know there was a gap it's easy to question the judgement of these people. The mind only functions with what knowledge is given, so what you know now isn't what these people knew at the time. But because the bridge has almost no incline you can't see a gap.
I just remembered seeing this as a teenager and thinking why didn't the person videotaping it get herself off the bridge. For all of those criticizing, that entire bridge wasn't safe including the place she was standing on. I never realized there was a toll booth behind her. The first thing I see a bridge start to collapse and I am out of there. I am not looking to warn anyone or stick around and take my chances.. It is all survival at that point.

>Cuz everyone knows a bridge is the *safest* place in an earthquake, right?
@jmeove You are correct -- the car went over the edge and hit the inclined broken piece with such force that the car continued up the ramp and its wheels became lodged in the gap between the far section and the top of the ramp.
Not a pretty site and not a pretty sound, either.
I was the person driving the p/u truck that stops short of the gap.
I used to be angry @ that couple (from OK BTW) for not doing something -- I drove right past them and I was *looking* for danger or people in trouble; they made no sign. & I later parked the truck sideways across the lanes.
But I've come to accept that they simply didn't see the gap, or at least its size. The driver who went over never did; I only saw it from a few feet away when I slammed on the brakes.
From the way she sounded before the car dropped, she probably wasn't aware of the hole being there -- they turned around before seeing it due to the traffic direction being screwed up. I'm giving them the benefit of doubt, since no one is perfect during stressful situations. However, if they new ...
How do we know this car fell into the void? if they are on the side of where the upper deck is still attached isn't it more likely that the car hit the gap where the two peices split. Which explains why we see parts (hood?) come back into view. if falling into the void that car would have just vanished. Am i missing info?
@scrybbla The section that fell only dropped on one side so when the car dropped into the gap it hit the road section which was now at a 60 degree angle like this: =====\ ====== Basically they hit it head on at speed.
It show's you the aftermath on a discovery channel program. 5 or 6 mangled cars all in a heap.
What flies up after the car goes over the edge? From what I can make out, the car would have fallen ALL THE WAY to the lower deck from here, no? Which direction was the car driving? Towards the edge where the upper deck was still slightly attached or from the other direction?

No! Don't go down there and help. If you do then who will hold the camera. Plus as soon as you tell anyone, there goes any hopes of more people driving off the edge. One of them should get out and direct traffic to move forward while the other holds the camera.
Ehmm, are dumb, go on the brigde right after earthquake ? If they r dead, sorry, u died only because u r stupid. I know, R.I.P. and other things like that, but it's truth.
uuuhhhhmmm - people were commuting home or commuting into the city, stupid -- you really think people chose to get on a bridge AFTER an earthquake?? they were already ON the bridge when the quake hit..
:05 and? of course it's after the earthquake - why would someone film before such a catastrophic event?? you mean to tell me you wouldnt whip out your camera phone & video something like this AFTER the fact?? still my point to your totally heartless comment is --- people were commuting home fro work around that time like they do every other day and the quake hit during rush hour... my dad was on the bridge that day - thankfully on the east bay side by the time the quake hit...
I was there in that Earthquake I remember watching people's heads bop around like bobble heads, I saw old people running out of their houses with their hands up and dumb ladies running outside with babies screaming and shit.
gaaaoooosh common sense would told ya to send your stupid asses to stop traffic before shit like that happened!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but i guess thats why they call ppl like you stupid!!!!
Crazy as it may seem, the lady driving that red car that you see crashes into the collapsed portion of the bridge that had to get pulled out went to the same college that my mom went to back in '89. I remember my mom telling me that. I feel so bad for her.
Geeze. That brings back memories. I lived in Novato California when we were hit by the earthquake. Remember it like it was yesterday, my mom picked me up from my after school daycare where we were currently having an earthquake drill. That sucked and if you ever drove across the bay bridge on the upper deck you'd see how that car didn't see the bridge collapse. You just couldn't see that the bridge was broken until it was too late.
That's the incident where, according to Wikipedia "A miscommunication made by police at Yerba Buena Island directed some of the drivers in the wrong direction; they were directed to the upper deck driving east toward the collapse site. One of the drivers didn't see the gap in time; the car plunged over the ledge and smashed onto the collapsed roadbed. The driver died and the passenger was seriously injured."
But yeah, it was stupid of those people to not even attempt to stop the vehicle. o.o
Gooosh! My thoughts are how long was she there even though she "just turned around"? If she turned around, doesn't that mean she knows there's a GAP? Shocked or not, you still have brains enough todo something beside sit there in your vehicle parallel, I might add, to the gap. Luckily the bridge wasn't in the water like the Minn one was. You can see the bottom of the car so it was "standing" sort of speak.
Why blame her when she said she wants to help? How would she know that someone would drive into the hole without stopping. Got news for you; drivers are supposed to look in front of them.
@zenarcade64 yeah, but i would not drive away I would call 911 and report it and i will try to stop cars till we had enough to block it. Thats dangerous and obviously it was. You are partially right, she did not know, and drivers are supposed to look in front, but she should have put a little more effort into trying to help. If you would have been that yellow car I am sure you would have want a warning.
@jmeove I agree, they could have prevented it. While you are driving at a certain speed its impossible to stop if you don't have a warning. at least the car behind saw it go down first and was able to react. Oh I agree
@jmeove This was an extremely bad earthquake. Don't you think if they knew how bad it was they would have got themselves off that bridge before the entire thing collapsed. If a bridge is collapsing underneath your feet are you really going to stick around and warn people.
They/she was a selfish moron. The reason for why you are defending her is because you're just as selfish as she was. When bad things happend (?) you only think on yourself and will stop at nothing to survive.
@PoppingSanta first of all you have no idea what happened and you are right I am selfish I hope you are in an earthquake and go over a bridge into the water and get angries at the water and yell at the water you bes a selfish moron, i gots no brains in my head and gets angries at the ocean and calls the ocean a coward because you Sir are truely a selfish moron, not only that you are stockish. I can't even make sense of someone so stupid. You house is not glass.
Hi, did you know that the numbers of the Beast were drawn on Obama's election night in his State ? The State website carries it on a video. Check out my page at the main video, I've put it there.
I live in the Bay area and remember when this happened. It was an amateur video they broadcast on the news. No one could see the gap in the bridge including the driver because both sides of the surface were even with each other. Nobody "let" these people drive into the gap for footage.
they need ratings, helping people just isn't part of the job, why does everyone assume news people are like cops or firefighters? They're not, the show is designed to make money - period.
The woman talking in this video has most likely lived the last 20 years of her life with guilt thinking that she should have done something to stop the car, but she was in shock herself and was not thinking clearly when she saw the car coming. She had no way of knowing that someone was going to end up dying. Don't call her names, she is human. This accident was no one's fault other than the earthquake.
I didn't call her anything. She herself said that could have been her but she turned around. Any level headed person would have stopped the car, put the hazard lights on and got out to warn people to slow down or stop not just see the gap and leave to film the inevitable accident.
@Astrobeat17 Its not the bridge engineers fault...they obviously knew Sanfransisco was basiclly an earthquake hotspot, so but the earthquake was just too strong
if you were truly from san francisco proper "bruh", you'd know that most locals call it either "the city" or its proper name...calling san francisco "frisco" can be fighting words to some SF natives....also, they don't call everyone "bruh" or "brah" or "bro" in SF, that's more of a Southern CA or Hawaiian thing. get your vernacular straight there, kiddo! as for the bay bridge, i can't wait for it to be re-done. i used to hate having to go to oakland or berkeley and being stuck in traffic.
he was the moron who drove off...i'm sure stevie wonder could've seen a HUGE FUCKING CHUNK OF BRIDGE MISSING...and NO TRAFFIC WHATSOEVER during RUSH HOUR on the BAY BRIDGE...
as for the newscaster...how could that have been you if you and your camera crew were STATIONERY. is that also to say that if the local network you work(ed) had sent you in the "right" direction...you would've slammed head on into the collapsed portion on the lower deck?
obviously you've never been on the bay bridge and have no clue on which level goes which direction. also, most of the local stations are based in san francisco...not oakland (or emeryville for that matter).
oh..and word of advice...
it's "you're an idiot"
i have been known as being a "can do it" sort of person, so perhaps i am an "I DO IT"
with the confusion just after the quake officals sent them up there because they didn't know what happened and the just wanted them to get of the bridge
they themselves didn't know that section of the bridge was out right there...she said herself "that could have been us" most likely because they had coincidentally stopped just before they got to that section of the bridge, not knowing it was out...
sorry but i dont agree... why would you be filming it unless you knew something was gonna happen. I doubt she just wanted to film other cars just driving across the bridge.
I'm amazed how after she says oh we gotta go down and help them.... you wouldnt of haven to help them if you stopped them in the first place.
i think it's the news...they stop the trucks all the time and just tape random occurrences just because they need random clips to fill the segments they are talking about...for example, here, where they were just taping traffic on the bridge, over it they could be saying something like "barely anyone is driving right now for fear that more earthquakes or aftershocks are to come..."
yeah...but you don't include the audio from the clip in the news...you fill it with someone talking in the news room...nowhere in here do i hear them saying that they knew this section of the bridge had given out...i guess i'm just being devil's advocate because i don't want to be quick to accuse people of being inconsiderate when someone died, even if it seems really obvious.
That part of the bridge most likely has a curve to it, therefore, the driver might not have seen it if he/she was paying attention to the line of sight right above the road surface.
My ex and I almost went to the bridge that day. I told him I had a bad feeling about it and we didn't go. He thought I was crazy then but he believes me now. Going with your instinct can sometimes save your life.
umm...hello? Obviously the woman did NOT know the gap was there because she said that she thought that they had sent her the wrong way....meaning she had wanted to go the other way .....NOT knowing there was a gap there.
Takes all of two seconds to figure out people...
and seriously, what's up with some of you? Kinda assholish eh?
You all need to think a little before you comment. Does it sound like she knew there was a hole there? The way she calmly goes "ad theres another car... GOSH' might say that she didn't realize what was there. Some people are so rude and stupid.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
"We need to go down and help" - uhhhh...maybe you've done enough you red-neck southern bitch.
These people could be charged or sued...even failing to do something a reasonable person would have done could get you sued. Too late now I suppose. Bomb Texas!!
Not all Texans are this stupid. Being born and raised here myself I would have known better than to just sit and film someone else drive right off a collapsed bridge. She doesn't even really sound Texan. She sounds like she is from mississippi or tennesee.
The first rule of rescue is to make sure you don't become a victim as well.
In hindsight, its easy to say "Help Them". At the time no one knew if that would be the only section to collapse or just the beginning of the entire thing collapsing.
They did what was in reasonable control. And documented this event for future politicians, scientist, etc...to study.
No, I'm sorry. I will place blame on the people who were filming. Sure, it's great to catch on film. But for goodness' sake. People DIED. They could have stopped those 2 cars or warned them instead of filming.
Yes, this is just the most idiotic thought--they were looking at the gap, and saw a car moving quickly on the other side of a 5-lane highway, _after_ it had passed them, three seconds before it fell into the gap, and they should have helped? Listening to the audio, I'm not even sure the woman knew the gap was there until the car crashed.
You've got to understand that when an earthquake of that magnitude occurs there are literally thousands of 911 calls coming in at the same time. This wears police, fire, and medical response to the limit. So, it doesn't surprise me that CHP isn't there to close the bridge. I agree with moose boy about the Oklahoma video people.
The video people were from Oklahoma on vacation. So they were disoriented, on top of just living through an earthquake on a violently trembling bridge.
You can't see the "hole" from where they are. And when they had come from that direction the 1st time, there was no hole. Got it?. The car crash was totally unexpected.
If you must place blame, blame the CHP and probably the guy who killed himself too, for not driving a little more cautiously after a bridge-shaking quake.
OK, stop blaming the camera people. I lived thru this earthquake and remember this story.
They HAD just come from that direction...BEFORE the earthquake!! When there was no gap in the bridge! Then the CHP made everyone on the top level turn around and drive back toward Oakland. Nobody knew the bridge had an open spot, which was very hard to see until you were right on top of it.
Have you no heart? That was one of the cars where people died!! You ass hole! You should have warned them! You should have stopped your car infront of the collaspes and stood outside telling people to stop. What kind of person are you? "Oh, i think we should go help." really? It's too late they are dead. you know, those peopel where someone family. Damn you.
The CHP is at fault for sending them down that way. The only think that the CHP appears to be good at is being assholes to minorities and harrassing the law obiding public.
So my question is why are our tax dollars being wasted on these white supremacist motherfuckers & bitches with average IQ of a chimp?
if i would've been driving down this bridge...and seen her...i would've aimed for her then jumped out right before the car flew off the upper deck...crushing this bimbo. it would've been epic!
she sounded so retarted gosh !!!!!!!!!! she said there goes another car they shuda stand outside n stopped cars dat past such ignorance can b prevented
From where she is filming, you can't see the "hole". Pause at 00:01 in the vid and see. Then she's looking in the view finder while "zooming in", doesn't see the cars until it's too late and they are too far.
GET A BRAIN!!! Something viewers here don't seem to realize, this event was covered by several cameras only 10 minutes after the shaking stopped. The helicopter view showed the person NOT holding the camera waved at those cars to stop and they just slowed briefly, dodged around, accellerated toward their deaths and only hit the brakes a second before they ran over the edge. The cameraman's friend risked their life trying to stop those idiots.
I know I have access to the internet, but that doesn't mean I know EVERYTHING that is on the internet. So you telling me to get a brain because I was basing my comment on the fact that person was filming these cars going into the ditch and was wondering why they didn't stop, is pretty damn ignorant. And since you are so all knowing, what does this sentence mean: 私のちんちんが大きですよ!Get a brain!
"that doesn't mean I know EVERYTHING" but you know enough to know that the people were stupid huh. If I were there with a camera I would take some shots of it too for posterity. Wonderful think about digital society.
All I can say in response to what you wrote is, I know how much I know because I know that knowledge gives you the right to know what you know because its knowing that gives a person the ability to have knowing attitude to things they know more about than others who claim to know what I know but they don't know.
Ponte di messina (from Sicilia to Calabria - italy) only projet...price 500.000.000€ ...only the Italians say that he is realizable, the others say not!
P.S. The people who live close to where would have to make the bridge, (and not only), do not have the water in house every day! And it is not 3° world, is Italy!

:05 and? of course it's after the earthquake - why would someone film before such a catastrophic event?? you mean to tell me you wouldnt whip out your camera phone & video something like this AFTER the fact?? still my point to your totally heartless comment is --- people were commuting home fro work around that time like they do every other day and the quake hit during rush hour... my dad was on the bridge that day - thankfully on the east bay side by the time the quake hit...

I don't think they realized the bridge was out at that point? If not, fuck her that damn bitch. The driver died.
bigyodatheman 2 years ago
That's the incident where, according to Wikipedia "A miscommunication made by police at Yerba Buena Island directed some of the drivers in the wrong direction; they were directed to the upper deck driving east toward the collapse site. One of the drivers didn't see the gap in time; the car plunged over the ledge and smashed onto the collapsed roadbed. The driver died and the passenger was seriously injured."
But yeah, it was stupid of those people to not even attempt to stop the vehicle. o.o
Jesant13 2 years ago
BowserSC 2 years ago 2
"That could have been us but we just turned around!!"
How about getting off your ass and warning the traffic behind you that there's a 50 foot gap in the road.
jmeove 2 years ago 47
@jmeove
Why blame her when she said she wants to help? How would she know that someone would drive into the hole without stopping. Got news for you; drivers are supposed to look in front of them.
zenarcade64 1 year ago
@zenarcade64 yeah, but i would not drive away I would call 911 and report it and i will try to stop cars till we had enough to block it. Thats dangerous and obviously it was. You are partially right, she did not know, and drivers are supposed to look in front, but she should have put a little more effort into trying to help. If you would have been that yellow car I am sure you would have want a warning.
angie55m 1 year ago
@jmeove
Furthermore the quote you just gave proves that she wasn't even aware of the gap. Your comment is thoughtless.
zenarcade64 1 year ago
@jmeove I agree, they could have prevented it. While you are driving at a certain speed its impossible to stop if you don't have a warning. at least the car behind saw it go down first and was able to react. Oh I agree
angie55m 1 year ago
@jmeove Because in the eyes of a news reporter, that would make great footage!
gcrebel2008 1 year ago
@jmeove This was an extremely bad earthquake. Don't you think if they knew how bad it was they would have got themselves off that bridge before the entire thing collapsed. If a bridge is collapsing underneath your feet are you really going to stick around and warn people.

They/she was a selfish moron. The reason for why you are defending her is because you're just as selfish as she was. When bad things happend (?) you only think on yourself and will stop at nothing to survive.
You Sir/Madame are a coward.
PoppingSanta 10 months ago
@PoppingSanta first of all you have no idea what happened and you are right I am selfish I hope you are in an earthquake and go over a bridge into the water and get angries at the water and yell at the water you bes a selfish moron, i gots no brains in my head and gets angries at the ocean and calls the ocean a coward because you Sir are truely a selfish moron, not only that you are stockish. I live in the Bay area and remember when this happened. It was an amateur video they broadcast on the news. No one could see the gap in the bridge including the driver because both sides of the surface were even with each other. Nobody "let" these people drive into the gap for footage.
joshl777 2 years ago 3
they need ratings, helping people just isn't part of the job, why does everyone assume news people are like cops or firefighters? They're not, the show is designed to make money - period.

i hope one day this lady regrets getting a news story over stopping those people from going off that bridge. and she is probably a nobody today...
150133 2 years ago
The woman talking in this video has most likely lived the last 20 years of her life with guilt thinking that she should have done something to stop the car, but she was in shock herself and was not thinking clearly when she saw the car coming. She had no way of knowing that someone was going to end up dying. Don't call her names, she is human. This accident was no one's fault other than the earthquake.
jkminnich 2 years ago 36
I didn't call her anything. She herself said that could have been her but she turned around. Any level headed person would have stopped the car, put the hazard lights on and got out to warn people to slow down or stop not just see the gap and leave to film the inevitable accident.
jmeove 1 year ago
@jkminnich "This accident was no one's fault other than the earthquake." And the bridge engineers...

if you were truly from san francisco proper "bruh", you'd know that most locals call it either "the city" or its proper name...calling san francisco "frisco" can be fighting words to some SF natives....also, they don't call everyone "bruh" or "brah" or "bro" in SF, that's more of a Southern CA or Hawaiian thing. get your vernacular straight there, kiddo! as for the bay bridge, i can't wait for it to be re-done. i used to hate having to go to oakland or berkeley and being stuck in traffic.

jmiller006 3 years ago
sorry but i dont agree... why would you be filming it unless you knew something was gonna happen. I doubt she just wanted to film other cars just driving across the bridge.
I'm amazed how after she says oh we gotta go down and help them.... you wouldnt of haven to help them if you stopped them in the first place.
sandpup321 3 years ago
i think it's the news...they stop the trucks all the time and just tape random occurrences just because they need random clips to fill the segments they are talking about...for example, here, where they were just taping traffic on the bridge, over it they could be saying something like "barely anyone is driving right now for fear that more earthquakes or aftershocks are to come..."
jmiller006 3 years ago
umm lol they wernt saying that lol they were saying that could of been us but we jsut turned around lol..
sandpup321 3 years ago
yeah...but you don't include the audio from the clip in the news...you fill it with someone talking in the news room...nowhere in here do i hear them saying that they knew this section of the bridge had given out...i guess i'm just being devil's advocate because i don't want to be quick to accuse people of being inconsiderate when someone died, even if it seems really obvious.

That part of the bridge most likely has a curve to it, therefore, the driver might not have seen it if he/she was paying attention to the line of sight right above the road surface.

They were doing what the CHP told them to do.
Nocho 4 years ago
No, I'm sorry. I will place blame on the people who were filming. Sure, it's great to catch on film. But for goodness' sake. People DIED. They could have stopped those 2 cars or warned them instead of filming.

Yes, this is just the most idiotic thought--they were looking at the gap, and saw a car moving quickly on the other side of a 5-lane highway, _after_ it had passed them, three seconds before it fell into the gap, and they should have helped? Listening to the audio, I'm not even sure the woman knew the gap was there until the car crashed.
greg5566 3 years ago
I remember watching that video in elementary school.
slicknickxp 4 years ago
You've got to understand that when an earthquake of that magnitude occurs there are literally thousands of 911 calls coming in at the same time. This wears police, fire, and medical response to the limit. So, it doesn't surprise me that CHP isn't there to close the bridge. I agree with moose boy about the Oklahoma video people.
bestofthebestjon 4 years ago
(contd...)
The video people were from Oklahoma on vacation. So they were disoriented, on top of just living through an earthquake on a violently trembling bridge.
You can't see the "hole" from where they are. And when they had come from that direction the 1st time, there was no hole. Got it?. The car crash was totally unexpected.
If you must place blame, blame the CHP and probably the guy who killed himself too, for not driving a little more cautiously after a bridge-shaking quake.
mooseboy18 4 years ago 4
OK, stop blaming the camera people. I lived thru this earthquake and remember this story.
They HAD just come from that direction...BEFORE the earthquake!! When there was no gap in the bridge! Then the CHP made everyone on the top level turn around and drive back toward Oakland. Nobody knew the bridge had an open spot, which was very hard to see until you were right on top of it.
mooseboy18 4 years ago 8

GET A BRAIN!!! Something viewers here don't seem to realize, this event was covered by several cameras only 10 minutes after the shaking stopped. The helicopter view showed the person NOT holding the camera waved at those cars to stop and they just slowed briefly, dodged around, accellerated toward their deaths and only hit the brakes a second before they ran over the edge. The cameraman's friend risked their life trying to stop those idiots.
ProductionDesignrMAX 4 years ago 2
I know I have access to the internet, but that doesn't mean I know EVERYTHING that is on the internet. So you telling me to get a brain because I was basing my comment on the fact that person was filming these cars going into the ditch and was wondering why they didn't stop, is pretty damn ignorant. And since you are so all knowing, what does this sentence mean: 私のちんちんが大きですよ!Get a brain!
