  • Wonderful!!!

  • I watch this whole thing everyday before I practice 3 hours to remind me what i'm trying to achieve. Thank you God of cello.

  • one of the musically most miserable interpretations on the web. period. (and I am not a cellist)

  • @litmanovus I'm not a cellist either but I think this is a great interpretation, musically or technicaly.

  • I play viola and I am learning this piece now and am going to play it for my jury, This will be a interesting journey

  • Terrible camera ange at 6:48. Other than that, this is awesome!

  • I am going to LEARN THIS CONCERTO.

  • Is that the Davidoff he is playing there?

  • I know Ma is still young, but Rostropovich was much better

  • @s34n777 Rostropovich was an amazing player. I believe in this concerto, at the least from the versions I've heard from both cellists, I think Ma has a better emotional grasp on it. Rostropovich I think had a fantastic technical grasp on it, and really showed his complete mastery of the instrument through this concerto.

  • @Bullz4eva93 Both Rostropovich and Yo-Yo Ma have complete mastery. It is a matter of tempo or taste.

It is wonderful (thanks to YouTube) to be able to compare and appreciate both interpretations!

  • I think the opening of Ma is less impressive than the one of Rostropovich. Rostropovich's opening is just like a shout, a challenge the soloist sends to the orchestra, it sounds more masculine than Ma's and gives me really a shock. Until then did I understand what fortissimo is. Just my feeling, I appriciate both, though.

  • I played this albumn on jobsites to work by and I never had a complaint and got lots of work done!

  • Oh wow I love the way he plays this in this old recording. So much more energy than his more recent ones (of this same concerto, that is). If only he took a little bit more time through the epic buildup around 7:20! My favourite part to the whole piece and he's all like SCREW THIS BIT! IMMA GO MADFAST TO THE TUTTI SECTION SO I CAN HAVE A REST! :'(

  • Amazing performance. Rostropovich owns this concerto though

  • he is rockin those glasses.

  • Yo Yo Ma is always respected, but in this performance he is too "edgy" for my personal taste.

Check out this concerto with Daniel Shafran, you may like

  • i stil prefer rostropovich's.. yoyo ma's cello sounds a lil bit too sharp to me.. esp the higher register.. jz my opinion.. =)

  • Yo Yo Ma is extremely talented and an AMAZING musician-- and the funniest part is that he finds the joy in every bit of the piece, as he looks expectantly the orchestra to fulfill his need for the beautiful music.

I must say, however, that while I do respect his brilliancy, I do not agree with his rather choppy interpretation of the piece. Like Ramsesthethird2, I am a sucker for Du Pre's interpretation, which i find deeper and more meaningful.

  • His facial expressions are priceless. :)

  • @a51078788 Yes! and It reflects what happens when somebody is "freed" when he goes "beyond virtuosity". His joy of being in the ** CASALS Festival ** also contributes!

  • I LOVE IT! REALLY LOVE IT!!!!! WONDERFUL! BRILLIANT! PERFEECT!!

  • Would sell my soul to the devil just to SEE this piece played by the late Jacquline du Pre, Cause I have the recording (second CD in EMI recordings) and her interpretation is just heavenly. I adore Yo Yo Ma still. such a wonderful artist.

  • 3:27 I think that yo-yo ma has by far the best opening to this concerto I have ever heard. Most other cellists seem to hit a bad not or two on their way though that opening.

  • I love Yo-Yo Ma. OMG, while listening to this I was thinking of the intense Susan Sarandon music in the movie the Witches of East Wick and then I hear Yo-Yo playing it at 6:38, Awesome! Thank you for posting this beautiful concerto!

  • dieser Mann ist unglaublich

  • grahhh the radio thing is annoying. This is so beautiful though! <3! Thank you so much for uploading.

  • @ChucklezTM For a moment I thought of not uploading it because of the strange 'radio thing" ("spurious interference")

  • @YTM021807 Well, I'm really glad you decided to. This is really a gorgeous piece. My stand partner in orchestra is learning it for college auditions, and so she plays it for me sometimes and it's amazing. :D

  • @YTM021807 I'm really glad you did, regardless. It's such a wonderful piece, and this, despite the "radio thing", is my favorite recording by far.

  • he obviously was in a good mood that day, hes all smiling :D

  • I totally love this song!! What's the actual name of it?

  • @justjayit777 Antonin Dvorak Cello Concerto. It is not a single song, it is a magnificent concerto rich in "songs", melodies, fast developments, slow adagio, tender, aggressive attacks ... etc etc .....

  • @YTM021807 Ahh I see. Thanks :) And thanks even more for the upload

  • @justjayit777 wrote: "I totally love this song!! What's the actual name of it?"

It was written by the Czech composer Antonin Dvorak - it is his Cello Concerto

and is widely available on C.D. The BEST ever performance was by the Spanish Cellist Pablo Cassals

If you don't want to buy it, try your Public Library - most of them have C.D's that you can borrow, then just download it onto "My Music" and play it from there.

(Let me know how you make out)

    Enjoy!

  • He also played faure's elegie with this orchestra

  • I saw him perform this piece in Indianapolis. I had AMAZING seats. Very awesome. Now I'm trying to learn this Concerto.

  • En el minuta 8.45 un violinista se come las uñas, tiene hambre jaja

  • expectacular....

  • essa música é lida de mais!!!

    this song is really beautiful!!!

  • i like paul tortelier's version better

  • Good

  • Yo-Yo Ma is beast! Love this piece.

  • At 840 on the counter...Check out the violin player...he is either picking his teeth or digging for gold!

  • this cant be happening!!!! yo yo ma came to P.R...BUT WHEN!!???? and i didnt go !!! right now im the most frustated woman on earth!!!!

  • whoever rated this below 5 stars should feel ashamed of themselves.

  • YoYoMa is Best!

  • yo yo ma = king of cello!

  • INCREIBLEMENTE EMOCIONANTE

  • Come on, who will share the Dvorak concert by Jacqueline?

    Please!!!!!!

  • I love this piece! I accompanied an eleven-year-old soloist on it once

  • I love the expression has when he looks up and to the right (his right).

  • 8: 50.... :[

  • Yo-Yo Ma is God.

  • Not really ... just a God of Cello :))

  • awsome

  • Normally i dont really care for Ma's works, but i really like his take on this masterpiece

  • Ma is the Man!

  • Very good comment....congratulations ...

  • this is exactly what I want to do.

  • check out the 2nd violinist at 8:40

    hahah

  • That is ok!

That is "emergency finger nail cutting" with teeth. The next analysis could be if he plays better after the clipping!! LOL

  • when it was played on this cello previously, be Jackie du pre, it was much better sounding i think, and also much more touching! x

  • I thought YYM's version was better than JdP's version of Dvorak. However the Elgar is certainly JdP's piece - although YYM's version is stunning.

  • He isn´t using his Stradivari here (Du Pré`s cello) he is using his Montagnana.

  • thanks for correcting me! lol

  • ah... no wonder this cello sounds different. :)

  • at 5:40, the second theme, his face exemplifies exactly how i feel when i try to play but when i get to the part at 6:05 i mess up and ruin the mood...

  • Great performance!

But I find he rushes the chords at around 6:50.

  • As a professional soloist, I think he has a right to do that sort of thing.

  • 5:07..... O_O chordgasms!!!!!

What a wonderfull player he is...almost makes me want to switch to cello!

  • I actually did take up cello to learn this piece. Too long a transition so I just learned this piece on violin.

  • I've been wanting to learn this on violin, as well. Can I ask how you learned the music? I imagine you played it up an octave and a fifth, but did you read the music straight from the cello part or transpose it yourself? Or perhaps you were able to find a violin transposition somewhere? I've got the cello part, don't know how to read the clefs. =( Gonna take a while to read, I wonder if it'd be easier to scan in Finale or something.

  • I actually transposed it note for note, using a music writing program. grewling work that took a really long time. worth it though

  • You wouldn't happen to still have that saved on your computer and be willing to share, would ya? :D

  • The file is on my pc back home. I'm at college. I'll try to remember to look for it the next time I'm home.

  • i realize this comment is from a year ago lol, but i really want to learn this on viola...was it really challenging to learn/how much experience do you have? i'm a junior in high school and have played for about 7 and a half years

  • I recently took up violin, which isn't the viola, but you'll be good to know that it's fairly easy since I've been playing piano for years now. If you know an instrument before hand, it really helps, though it's not essential. If you practice and have a teacher, you won't have many problems for such a worthwhile experience.

  • everybody wants to play cello but... lol

  • in an interview Yo-Yo Ma said that he loves being on stage

  • I love how he bobs his head at the start of the cello solo.....he always has so much fun on stage. So happy and care-free. Id freeze up like a popsicle.

  • Yo-Yo Ma is as amazing as ever. This is my favorite concerto and I am in love with this rendition.

  • ya, the orchestral accompaniment is terrific! and Yo Yo Ma is as pwnage as always... <3

  • No!

The mayority of the players are puertoricans!

  • @YTM021807 It doesn't matter, I still don't like them.

  • @huarachetes You'r so wrong LOL

  • I never considered that Puerto Rico had a major orchestra... especially one this good!

It seems that Yo Yo Ma can easily play this in in sleep... never looks at his fingerboard, which I would find nearly impossible.

  • Coincidentally, the second fluatist looks like Antonin Dvorak himself. :D

  • wow ive never heard this recording, cool. I know what ill be doing for the next 40 minutes =].

  • Thank you for posting!

  • Yo yo is awesome here.

The annual "Festival Casals" inspires everyone. Enjoy!

    Thanks!

  • I haven't been in Puerto Rico. But from this film, I can imagine kind, friendly, warm-hearted people. I'm very happy to see Yo-Yo is enjoying to play with the Orchestra, and also sharing the great music! Thanks!

  • Correct!

This year's "Festival Casals" starts tomorrow

    February 22, 2008.

The legacy, humanity, kindness and spirit of Pablo Casals lives on and was fully present in this concert!

  • Oh!! How nice!!!

    Love,
