Yes, they have their faults, as do Fords (and all makes of vehicle) but I've done 135k miles in my latest VW, the last two both went over 150k miles, and all I've ever done is service them and a couple of wheel bearings, and one clutch. I don't recall having much spare time when I drove Ford...

I had a 1984 Rabbit GTI here in Texas (same as Golf Mk1 GTI). It was the best car I ever owned. I recently bought a 2010 Golf and am well pleased so far. Ford never sold that great Ford of Europe Escort XR3 here though, instead they gave us a crap U.S.market Escort that had a reputation for cracking cylinder heads at 40,000 miles. No wonder the Japanese cars sell so well here.

Of course cars from the 50's and 60's are some of the most beautiful cars ever made and I don't think cars will ever look as good or offer the same driving experience again.

My first ever car was a Mk3 Escort. It was 7 years old when I bought it only to find the floor was literally full of fibre glass as it had already rotted away and had been patched up by the cowboy who sold it to me - 7 rs old car with LOTS of holes in the floor - Mad!!

The escort is a completely different car in Europe, I mean, my escort gets an amazing 0-60 in 13.6 seconds, around the same year as the XR3i, that's kind of a big difference to the european's 8.something.
Unfortunatelly the Escort was shitty on the chasis.. it had positive camber on the front axle for god sake... the Golf allways had negative camber in all wheels.. so the Golf allways had better chasis.
I like the body styling more and the RS turbo is awesome (and all XRs sound awesome) but the Golf was superior in handling

A Golf GTi Mk I or Mk II will not lose any value on what it is worth now! It may get slightly worse MPG, but it won't fall apart unless you've bought one for 50p.
what u said can be said of virtually every 20-30 year old vehicle out there. a 1986 yugo isnt losing much value over the coming years either! i brought up the jazz/fit example as a response to paththebrit since he said a mark 1 gti will waste most new cars now. the jazz/fit is a fairly basic economy vehicle that offers virtually identical acceleration times. i hardly count a 0.2 sec 0-60 time as "wasting" especially since they aren't even in the same class. a civic si wouldve been more =.
Have owned both the XR3 and XR3i and have had the mk1 GTI and still own a 90 GTI 16v. Loved them all and still do BUT you have alot more chance of finding a decent dub now over the Ford simply because most the XR's were used and abused once the RS series were launched in both the mk3 and mk4 shape.
I'm a Dub nut but would give it all up tomorrow for a pristine S1 RST.

My first ever car was a Mk3 Escort. It was 7 years old when I bought it only to find the floor was literally full of fibre glass as it had already rotted away and had been patched up by the cowboy who sold it to me - 7 rs old car with LOTS of holes in the floor - Mad!!
In all honesty I've never heard of a VW rotting away in anywhere near that time frame. But I admit I'm biased towards VW.
If I saw an XR3i driving down the street would I give it a second look? Too right - it's a classic

Both are great cars. Both go like hell and both rust like hell. Like a lemming falling into the abyss. And they both, the survivors, are worth about the same these days, in worthwhile order.
If you see a good one now, admit it, you'd take a second glance, regardless of Ford v VW stuff.

1. If you drive an escort in the states you are either old or got the car from you grand parents.
2. Escorts are terrible cars. Good luck not destroying heater cores.
3. Golf gtis are for dorks. I have one and I love it and I am a dork. Fords are for old people. I would rather be a dork than old.

The escort is a completely different car in Europe, I mean, my escort gets an amazing 0-60 in 13.6 seconds, around the same year as the XR3i, that's kind of a big difference to the european's 8.something.

Unfortunatelly the Escort was shitty on the chasis.. it had positive camber on the front axle for god sake... the Golf allways had negative camber in all wheels.. so the Golf allways had better chasis.
I like the body styling more and the RS turbo is awesome (and all XRs sound awesome) but the Golf was superior in handling

what brand new cars does it put to shame? a new honda fit has a smaller engine, higher top speed, albeit accelerates to 60 just .2 seconds slower, has 6 airbags, abs, much lower emissions, much stronger body shell,.... though to compare apples to apples, I'll take a Civic Si over it any day.

my comment was directed at paththebrit further down. not sure why it didnt post under his comments. he claimed that a 30 year old gti will put modern cars to shame. was asking which one he was referring too. as for being more expensive to run, dont think so. the golf gets worse mpg, depreciates faster than the titanic sank, and falls apart the minute u drive it off the lot. yes i've OWNED both.

A Golf GTi Mk I or Mk II will not lose any value on what it is worth now! It may get slightly worse MPG, but it won't fall apart unless you've bought one for 50p.

what u said can be said of virtually every 20-30 year old vehicle out there. a 1986 yugo isnt losing much value over the coming years either! i brought up the jazz/fit example as a response to paththebrit since he said a mark 1 gti will waste most new cars now. the jazz/fit is a fairly basic economy vehicle that offers virtually identical acceleration times. i hardly count a 0.2 sec 0-60 time as "wasting" especially since they aren't even in the same class. a civic si wouldve been more =.

Have owned both the XR3 and XR3i and have had the mk1 GTI and still own a 90 GTI 16v. Loved them all and still do BUT you have alot more chance of finding a decent dub now over the Ford simply because most the XR's were used and abused once the RS series were launched in both the mk3 and mk4 shape.
I'm a Dub nut but would give it all up tomorrow for a pristine S1 RST.

Nothing wrong with french cars. I ownded a Williams Clio and it would have absolutely destroyed an RS Turbo. Lighter car with more power and entirely Rev Happy.

The Fiat Strada Abarth 130TC of 1982, the contemporary of the Escort XR3 and Golf GTi, puts out 128bhp, 0-60 in 7.8seconds, shame they had a similar 0-rust time.
Don't just dismiss Fiats as shopping trolleys. but even then you get onto cars like the Uno turbo....

I'm 18, just bought a Golf Mk2 Gti its my second car, i have to say its by far the best car compared to the modern saxo's, 106's corsa ect.. there all so boring to drive! get real car, get a GTi!
