indian poetry is a misnomer, it is like calling a throat-song of inuits a canadian song. a poetry belongs to the language not the territory of origin. would you call bengali poetry written in america, american? urdu is one of the languages spoken in india, however only recognized as the official language in pakistan. calling 19th century urdu ghazals by the country of origin is misleading.

@aburashdan Well, if the topic of discussion is poetry in India, then Urdu poetry definitely falls under its purview. Urdu is one of the native languages of India and is recognized as a national language. Indians have been speaking Urdu for centuries - why, we invented the language! Just like Hindustani music and Sikhism, Urdu is the produce of a unique mixture of external Islamic influence on a local Indian base.

@aburashdan There are more native Urdu speakers in India (52 Million - 2001) than in Pakistan (13 Million - 2008). Almost all the important names in Urdu poetry are from India, including Ghalib, Mir, Momin and a host of others. And, as Arun pointed out, Urdu does happen to be one of the officially recognized languages of India as well. Urdu ghazal is well respected in India, and in no way are Indians going to permit you to impute that Pakistan has a better claim on Urdu Ghazal.
