Ahhhhh I love improvising! cant wait till I can improve and sound GOOD! ahhh I need practice practice practice!!! I will make my fingers bleeed! haha jk bout that.. But I LOVE GUITAR! <333
Show us some Dorian licks Marty! That would great. I'd like to see some licks in all the modes; there's a series of videos for ya. Anyway just an idea. Thanks Marty
Thanks for your videos. You explain stuff brilliantly and your an amazing player. I love the way you combine modal stuff with Pentatonic - makes it much easier to know how to apply modes me an intermediate player like myself....
Are you picking everynote on the quick runs like the one at 2:18 or are you hammering on?
Thanks! Asked you to post the backing rhythm from your funk band video in a different post and then found this video and you play the same rhythm. Thanks again!
Last of the questions........ And how do you keep track of what fingering you are in? I find it ok in first position but when i shift i foget whats going on. Lastly I can't get phrygian to work for much anything. That flat 2 is a tough one. thanks man
branch off a little bit at a time until you get it. than, keep adding on. I like to know the E root form and the A root form first, than build off of each of those and than before you know it, you are jamming on the whole neck1
Question continued.....does it have to be a IV7 for the four chord to play a dorian mode? My guessing is that it should match when going over the specific chord. Im thinking you could play dorian phryg and aeolian over the i and bIII chords because they all share that harmony. Say dorian for a bit, aeolian for a bit, phrygian for another bit.
if you have a minor i and a IV7 it's definitely dorian for both, however if you try what you suggested, and it sounds good to you, than go for it, as long as it sounds good than you are the man! Trying a little bit of all the minor modes over the i chord hasn't worked out to well in my experience. just keep that in mind and happy jamming!
hey man great lesson. Quick question. Do you ever switch between the minor modes over i-iv-v.? Does the harmony have to match in order to play the different modes?
Good stuff again ! I learned the seven positions starting from the G-major as position 1. A dorian as position 2 etc. What seems confusing is what chords go with what scale. In pentatonics its the key your in, that easy and makes sense. In modes ?
there different ways to get to your answer. 1. if it's a minor progression plug in the minor pent. and than add the half steps from aeolian or dorian and the one that sounds the best is probably the right one. a progession that starts with a major chord plug in major pent. and add half steps for ionian or mixo or lydian and whichever sounds the best will probably be the right one. most minor progressions are either aelian or dorian and most major are either ionia(major scale) or mixo.
A good thing to remember is that the modes always stay in the same order.Ifyou're playing in A dorian the next positions up the neck will still go phrygian, lydian, mixolydian, aeolian, locrian then back to ionian.
D dorian is all the same as C major, Bb major is the same as C dorian. there are a lot of cool modal approaches to blues. A blues you could play A mixo over A7, Dmixo over D7 and
E mixo over E7. a different way to think of the same thing would be A mixo over A7 than A dorian over D7 (which is the same as D mixo) than the A major scale over E7 ( same notes as E mixo) it's all about the easiest way for YOU to start plugging in the right scale. this is good for practice but eventually it will flow
That's exactly what i wanted to do: "modal pentatonics". Blues with some extra color. But does dorian has to stick with 2 chord progressiions? ii IV7?
no not at all, good question. that's just one example. it would break down like this: a dorian would be some or any combination derived from G major but with Amin as the tonal center. so the chords of A dorian and G major are exactly the same except for what the root is. the chords are this: Gmajor,Amin,Bmin,Cmajor,D7, Eminor, F#min7b5,these chords in any combination with Amin as the tonal center would be A dorian. feel free to ask any other questions, thanks.
So that works with every key. In C, dorian would be the same as Bb. You look at a key and play it's dorian right? So just to make sure: Looking at a A blues we play G Dorian, and a Am blues we do the same?
the idea is to practice all the stuff so eventually you are insintually just playing whatever you're hearing in your head, I don't think about modes when I'm improvising. they should be tools to help you develop your vocabulary. thanks
hi i got a question, say i want a A dorian for the chord progression, above u have explained that as long as i keep my A min as the key center with any combination to the diatonic chord progression of G, i will have the A dorian feel right? how do u keep the Amin as the tonal center den?
It's a Dorian progression because although the key signature is G Major, you are essentialy using the ii chord from G (A minor) as the tonic, or key center.

Marty uses a Line 6 DM 4 Delay modeler. Sounds like he uses a bridge pickup for the bright tones for funk
