I love the phrase, "To Luther, prudence was apostasy." This phrase is pregnant with much truth about intrinsic disorder within Protestantism. We believe Mary is our mother since Christ said it on the cross (with John representing the Apostles, and the apostles representing the church). That's a reality. We embrace that reality, Prots do not. Likewise with the Eucharist or the Papacy, etc.
Congrats, you were able to attack a single man's doctrine. This proves that, as Catholics believe, thinking is bad, It's especially laughable considering you mock him for the SAME belief you are yourself supporting.
This is quite a confused comment. I do not believe in any of the condemned propositions, and no where even imply that I "support" them. This "single man"'s heretical innovation, among others, caused one of the biggest schisms in Church history.
@Theologica37 The Central philosophy of the Catholic church is Stagnation and Lack of free thought, That Iron ought not sharpen Iron. I agree with some of the things you say, but the Idea of making an argument to refute an opposing doctrine is a Protestant Idea, as opposed to Catholics which just shout HERESY and pretend that they are always right no-matter the actual facts. No wonder the Catholics held Humanity in the dark ages that the Opponents of Early science started.
That is unequivocally false, PT. It was the Catholic Church that has funded universities, and the Catholic Church has gave us our greatest thinkers (Aquinas, Leibiniz, etc.).
"but the Idea of making an argument to refute an opposing doctrine is a Protestant Idea"
By that logic, the Eastern Orthodox church criticizing the Catholic church and breaking off during the schism of 1054 is a "protestant idea."
Look, I appreciate you leaving your opinions: but you have absolutely NO IDEA what you're talking about. I mean.. "but the Idea of making an argument to refute an opposing doctrine is a Protestant Idea".. are you kidding me? The "dark ages" reference is and has always been a foolish "enlightenment" bias. The philosophical tradition in the Catholic Faith built the bedrock for and was at the very center of the "Christian revival" of the 20th century, want me to name names?
@Theologica37 The catholic church is meant to think for you, thinking for yourself is "Theological anarchy" and Catholics are supposed to oppose that.
First of all, nobody said (certainly not me!) "catholic church is meant to think for you". Second, you contradicted yourself even if that were true; if the Catholic Church thinks for you', then necessarily you *don't think for yourself.
Your earlier comments were equally misguided, for you think that it is proper to protestantism to reason about doctrine and disagree rationally, giving arguments and so forth.. did you watch the video? The founder of Protestantism is a FIDEIST.
@Theologica37 Anything Martin Luther believed matters as much to me as what The Pope does. Luther isn't the Pope of Protestantism, I know most Catholics don't realize that "Luther was wrong about X therefore I'm right" does not follow, but it still doesn't.
No PT. You completely missed Theologica37's point. Theologica never said you believed that Luther was "the Pope of Protestantism." His comment was in response to this statement you made:
"the Idea of making an argument to refute an opposing doctrine is a Protestant Idea"
Ignoring the fact this statement is false, Theo37 was making the point that it's rather absurd to say use of reason and argumentation is a protestant idea (cont)
TB94 has exactly corrected you. I never said Luther was wrong about X therefore Catholics are right, I said that Luther was a fideist, and as such protestantism was not founded on rational, reasonable doctrinal disagreement.
IN FACT: Luther threatened to throw Scripture into the river if you disagreed with him!
For millennia the Catholic tradition is (the most I would argue) rich in Socratic disagreement and philosophical rationality.
when 1) the founder of Protestantism was a Fideist, and 2) even if you don't agree with Luther as a protestant yourself, it's still false to say that use of reason and argumentation is a protestant idea, when it was the CATHOLICS who started the idea of scholastic debate (funding and starting universities for instance), and allowed Christianity to see truth in the works of Aristotle and other philosophers.
"I know most Catholics don't realize that "Luther was wrong about X therefore I'm right" does not follow, but it still doesn't."
This statement has nothing to do with Theologica's video even if it was true (*hint: it's not). For one, Nowhere was Theologica arguing that because Luther was wrong in his reworkings of justification, then that means Catholicism. That completely misses the point of the video that it's absurd.
I'm sorry about this. I do this as the closest thing to "footnotes" when the footnote is very important. My hope is that one can pause and look back. Would you prefer a method of all audio?
Wow, you laid a smack down on my denomination's founder. I'm not a Luther expert, and I would be considered a black sheep in my church's eyes. Plus, I'm a little out of touch with Lutheran ideology. I know Luther struggled with the thought of the devil and put a lot of emphasis on total depravity. Therefore, there is nothing we can do to save ourselves. God is 100% responsible for our salvation. I do acknowledge this has some sticky theological implications.
Awesome! Why do evangelicals not realize these things? God bless you and your videos!

Do you have an actual video dealing with sola scriptura and not a video dealing wih what others have said on the issue?

FACT ABOUT MARTIN LUTHER: He was a habitual masturbater.
Search4diabetescure 3 months ago
Luther would have had trouble reading the decrees of Trent on sin and justification, since they were only issued after, or shortly before, he died.
