I can see both sides of this argument - firstly Lillee didn't infringe any rules. Secondly Brearley had genuine cause for concern about the damage being done to the ball (and I'm sure the Aussie bowlers would have raised similar objections if Bob Willis was using a metal bat). However, if you move 30 years down the road and take a look at baseball, half the major league hitters use aluminium and half use the traditional wood. No issues with damage to the ball or composition of the bat.

1) - Naming three or for incidents in international cricket is not really a strong basis for making a nation wide generalisation.

2) - While not explicitly against the rules using an Aluminium bat was probably an attempt to get some direct performance benefit (note; Swimming over the last 5 years).
