  • I braved an ice storm alone in a VW to see this in Ohio when it came out. I have seen it again and consider it horrible but I found it fascinating originally and it still stands as ... well .... Karen Carpenter, anyone?

  • Rocky and Phantom are both brilliant <3

  • rocky horror of the phantom? FUCK IT I LOVE THEM BOTH!! at least the phantom didn't get a shitty sequel

  • Fucking haters. Ok. I love rocky and phantom. I'll say having seen both at the theater first run that De Palma had the better camera work. But Rocky had the better cast. I like almost all the songs in both. So bitch or enjoy...guess thats life isnt it. peace when you have it. survive when you have to.

  • @stevezarm2k3 Thank you!!

  • The best movie of Brian De Palma

  • Ok People whoever thinks Phantom is better than Rocky Horror or Rocky Horror is better than Phantom... SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!!

Both are fucking great! they're actually better than this Green Day American Idiot or Glee bull-shit, seriously people stop saying which one is better and vice versa. If it continues, im taking this video off...

  • @EthanxClarke ,,,please dont take the video down just disable comments:)

  • hello peggers

  • strepitoso

  • @bocciatatrevolte the best movie ever bub.

  • ok look, this is one of my favorite movies

  • One of the best lyrics ever written: "If I could live my life half as worthlessly as you, I'm convinced that I'd wind up burning too." Love it!!!!

  • I LOVED being in that movie! :)

  • i have a phantasmagoria mag with phantom, rocky and the last days of man on earth all the same year sigh what a great year!

  • movies like this, RHPS, Tommy, and a Clockwork Orange really make me wish i was born back then XD

  • OMG how did you get the version where you see him come out of the record press?!?!

  • My parents took me to the drive-in to see this movie when it came out. Made quite an impression on me. Still one of my favorites.

  • The Rocky Homo Picture Show and this piece of shit are the gayest movies of all time.

  • Tasty, Winslow. Tasty.

  • I love the music from this movieXD. Its like listening to Rocky Horror but with more beat or somethin'

  • I like how this music score sounds a lot like Alice Cooper in his heyday, which was backed with such awesome musicians as Dick Wagner, Steve Hunter, and Prakish John.

  • Rocky actually was in London long before it went to the US..

  • This is an insanely entertaining musical-comedy-spoof that I was lucky enough to discover through reading a magazine about Dario Argento and then taped it off TV.

  • Great movie! I remember when it came out. Way before it's time. Thank you for posting it.

  • swan lives.in boca raton.

  • I Love this movie

  • Thanks! Loved this movie when it first came out.

  • well that was good.i`m off to the prison dentist now hope hes good.

  • i first saw this on a double bill with rocky... totally different musicals... both fantastic in their own right..

  • @mskbabe08 I wouldn't say *totally* different..... some have said (seemingly rightly) that Phantom came a little TOO close to the then in-production Rocky. The blonde Frankenstein, anyone?

  • I'm always confused when people compare this to Rocky...I love both movies, but they're clearly very different.

  • One of my favorites soundtracks ever!

  • phantom and rocky are two very different movies both great in there own way they are what they are and are cult classics

  • C'est vraiment cool.

    Merci

  • There's no way they could remake this movie better. It was a masterpiece.

  • just make it with quetin tarantino or re release the movie :)

  • @unisoul40 Why? Does it need more naked, perfectly manicured female feet in it?? No, a remake would be blasphemy. Quentin is good at what he does, but he doesn't do this, and thank Hell he doesn't.

  • @QueenMAB418 Just have a good director make it the way it is a remake but nothing different AT ALL

  • @unisoul40 Well. okaayy however what does Paul think of this? Shall I ask him? Yes I do have his email. He's older now, so let us see what he'd think of it, would he reprise Swann or cast someone else? The Music, too, must be untouched. I don't favor the original actors/singers, they're just too old now....what do you think Unisoul? What is our real goal here? (I think Phantoms mask could use a Vader-ing up a bit.) Do we want to reach out to today's generation? They WILL think it's PofTOpera rip!

  • @unisoul40 well you don't need to go crazy! the movie is good i mean johnny depp as swan that could and would be a good part for him. fergie is phoenix.... i mean come on that would be a good cast

  • "There really is a Phantom!"

  • I LOVE this song!

  • Great edit. Really well done.

  • If they remake this I will cry my eyes out, this is a classic! I love how Paul Williams sings most of the songs and Jessica Harper's acting and voice can never be replaced! Being 18 and watching this film since I was about 11 or 12 I can honestly say this film will beat the remake with an iron fist!

  • @PagenBabe- Agreed! Making this movie without Jessica Harper as Phoenix would be blasphemy!! They'd probably pick some bimbo with no class and that Twilight guy as Winslow... *SHUDDER*

  • Ha, improbably the youngest person watching this.

  • I'd love to get this on DVD.

  • @BlondeBardie look on amazon.com

  • hace poquitistiyo estube hablando con Paul williams en Century city es chero miyo

  • Great job.

I am already a big fan of this movie but really like your edited video.

  • Paul Williams MR ASCAP... dont any of you forget it.

  • These are the two (Rocky horror picture show and Phantom of the paradise) cult movies i ABSOLUTELEY LOVE!!! I dont get it how so many people say they are somewhat similar, they are SO UNIQUE! Okey, they both have music in them, groupies and a dude dressed as a woman (Frank in Rocky and Winslow in this) but both are SO GREAT!!! Weard yes, BUT GREAT!!! But I do have to say I love Paul Williams voice more than Richard O'Briens, but then again Curry could strut the stage better than Graham XD

  • @fbebeats POTP

  • A song that never fails to brighten up a bad day!

  • Thanks for all comments, but remember, just a reminder

Rocky Horror was first before Phantom, People say both parody of each other doesn't make sense, both were original ideas =)

  • Phantom of the paradise is way more better than rocky horror film. I saw this movie when i was 8 years old but i didn't understand it. but i loved the music. Plus i watch it every now and then.

  • @EthanxClarke

Wrong ! Phantom of the paradise 1974 and Rocky picture horror show 1975 ... And it's an obvious fact that the previous had a lot of influence on the latter ....

  • @alonzobistro Rocky was first a off-broadway show in 1973 WAY before Phantom went into Production, know the facts =p

  • @alonzobistro Uhh I don't see much in common between the two except the lead "villains" are horndogs. LOL Obviously, the Phantom of the Paradise is just a remake of a cross between the Portrait of Dorian Grey and the Phantom of the Opera. Rocky was just... strange and unusual. LOL

  • @alonzobistro I saw Rocky at the Valhalla theater in Glebe in 73, directed by Jim Sharman , starring Reg Livermore and Kate fitzpatrick. Convergent evolution. And the stage show was a hellava lot better than the movie

  • @EthanxClarke Neither one has ANYTHING to do with the other. PotP is a musical retelling the tale of Faust mixed with The Portrait of Dorian Gray and more or less takes a stab at the music industry as a whole.

Rocky Horror Picture Show in contrast is a musical more or less approaching the issue of sexuality and the deviancy from the norms that surround it. I like both movies but both just happen to be from the mid-70s. Neither is a parody of the other, they parody norms of the 1970s.

  • @EthanxClarke Yeah your right. I think Rocky horror was 73 on release and this was 74. Both great fun.

  • @EthanxClarke

I just don´t understand why people tcompare rocky horror and this movie.

I donñt find any similaritie, both great movies.

By the way,Phantomof the paradise is not compeltely and original idea it takes things from phantom of the opera and the picture of dorian gray.

  • @EthanxClarke Phantom was first and came out in 1974 - they compare the two movies a lot... but this is played as a serious horror movie and take on the Phantom of the Opera....with a little Faust and Dorian Grey thrown in.... while Rocky is more of a campy romp on horror movies... so the only thing they really have in common is that they have music :)

  • This entire piece of work, music, movie saturated the souls of my Brother and me growing up. A few years ago I wrote to Paul Williams telling him about my Brother (now dead) and how much his work meant to us and the dude wrote back! Very cool chap!

  • @SOGGYmilktoast That may be but Phantom still blows Rocky Horror out of the water.

  • The soundbyte of the phantom talking was so misplaces it fucked up the song

  • lol, those first three chords...I kept expecting it to turn into Elfman's Batman.

  • Wow, I haven't thought of or heard about Paul Williams in like... Forever! Nostalgic.

  • i love it!!

  • Nice!

  • shyte really!!

  • Ahh yes, the Kurt Cobain Theme Song.

  • @BillWa i have to admit that was funny

  • I recently saw Paul Williams in an old Planet of The Apes flick on TV. He played an oraguatang.

  • This is my wedding song

  • One of my fave movies and love the song always have watched the movie like 5 or 6 times one day back in 75 I think noone else came to the theatre that day but me and my friends and my brother so the staff just let us stay and gave us a good deal on the hotdogs drinks and popcorn.

  • I rented this movie totally expecting to hate it. Instead I get catchy music, excellent & clever cinematography, and a great acting job by Paul Williams!

  • @JoeDonFan Can you really go wrong with Paul Williams music? I dont think so!

  • I used to cut school and walk to the MB center UA theater and watch this film... several times!

I met Brian De Palma once on a plane and could not convey my thanks enough!

  • @blairmonster How could anyone? So never feel ashamed about that.

  • I used to go to the midnight movie showings in SF down the street where I worked as a dog trainer a couple few years ago. That was the first time I saw this movie and I bought it the next day. Swan was there, it was amazing, and I got to shake his hand. Awesome.

  • Best movie ever!

  • Ruling Class !!

  • ahhh yes one of the best movies of all time.... i saw this when i was 7 and i still remember every song by memory

  • me too!! haha

  • 35 years ago i took 3 buses with my friend to see phantom i think we went 4x. had a vsh copy but well.. hard to get new dvd or sound track .

  • HMV I found it in the DVD... sadly it was in the bargin bin!!!

  • Sadly? Simply a case of their ignorance being to your advantage!

  • download it on vuze

  • Paul Williams , brian Depalma hit this one right on the head of cult perfection, . . .

  • the first movie i saw as a teen, by myself,

    thanks so much!!

  • thank u so much for this great video. All the actors are great but i fell immediately in love with William Finley(the phantom) the first time i saw it

  • My sister took my to Rocky on halloween when I was 11. This was on before it started as a double feature.

That night made me a freak :)

  • Predated Rocky Horror

  • Actually, both movies were made & released about the same time. And dont forget that Rocky Horror was a stage play before it was a movie.

  • Great vid, really good work. Shows off the film in all it's sublime glory!

  • Dude, I'm 43 and feel old as sin. I caught this movie on cable years ago and just recently bought it. I watch the damned thing all the time. It is simply a fun freakin' film! Great music, and Williams is so underrated as an actor, but "Beef" steals the show.

  • Comment removed

  • I saw this in the theater, in the DRIVE IN theater, now that I think about it, when I was 16 or 17. I'm 53 now. Time doesn't just fly, it breaks the sound barrier. Damn I miss that era. And I still have a soft spot in my heart for Paul Williams' music. I had almost every vinyl album he made, but this one was my favorite. I got a USB turntable a couple of years ago, and this was the first album I made into MP3s and put on my iPod.

  • I was introduced to this movie when I was 7! And I actually understood it! After I saw it I got totally obsessed with it.

  • Im still obsessed and Im 53

  • I LOVE BEEF, HE IS THE BEST IN THE MOVIE

  • Such an underrated, if not forgotten film. I just bought the dvd. LOVE all the music. I need to but the CD now !

  • Was this movie the first GOTH movie ever,It's so smart the way this rock opera really stands out with its dark humor and style of ,cloths, music.

  • no goth has nothing to do with it oh sit u dont evon know bat cave . this is pre disco

  • First "horror" movie in my life. Never been so scared since then. I was 12 now i have 31. Unforgettable!!!

  • Somewhere between kitch and art is this strange film. I saw it in 1975 when I was 10 years old on HBO.

Odd movie, odd year, odd everything.

  • Is this not the strangest honkey tonk music ever? Oh how I loved it. I think I was 11 or 12 when this movie came out. Wash n go hair, denim ruled and Jessica Harper stole my heart. Love the sentiment of the song and the meaning has grown and evolved over the years as I have:

Love yourself as you loved no other

Be no man's fool and be no man's brother

We're all born to die alone, you know, that's the hell of it.

  • Great video dude.

  • Jessica, I meant.

  • Ah, Jennifer Harper, her chicken dance is so hot.

  • When my wife and I first got married we would go the theatre for the first showing of the day and stay for all the showings that day. We were broke.

  • LOVE this! Been a favorite of mine since I first saw it -- 1975 or so? Had it on vinyl, too, and played the hell out of it! ( My step-brother is the guy in the flannel shirt that Beef tosses the mic to in the front row... pretty cool... :)

  • Watching this made me remember that one of the lobby cards outside the theater where I saw this was of the guys trying to put out the fire. Deja-vu! It's been almost 35 years since I've seen the movie.

  • horror picture show is the parody of this movie

  • this movie came out when Rocky was in production and Rocky was an Off-Broadway show in June of 1973

and Phantom went into Production in September of 73

  • i meant to say Phantom was in production started in December 1973 and ended January 1974

  • a parody of a parody

  • @elkintobitle Nope.... RHPS is a parody of science fiction horror shows...... (listen to "Late Night Double Picture Show" from their soundtrack) :)

  • @ryoko65 Jeez, at least get the title right.... it's "Science Fiction Double Feature".

  • Comment removed

  • @SecretTimeWarp ..... well... let's see... I made a mistake.... so I stand corrected......did I hurt anyone?.... no.... did it cost anybody anything? ... no.... did I say I was an expert on the RHPS?..... definitely no.....did the world come to an end?..... um... no..... was it reported on all the tabloids?..... no.... so.... why did you make such a big deal out of it? you need to be nicer to people.... even people that make mistakes.... which I guess you never do :)

  • ブライアン・デ・パルマ監督の「ファントムオブパラダイス」と「ミッドナイトクロス」大好きです。

    1度見たら忘れられません。

  • Very Nice! Keep up the good work!

  • GRAX DESDE MEXICO

  • NIcely done!! I was at Phantompalooza in April 05 - your editing shows a real feeling for the piece - Thanks

  • Any of you familiar with The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew Meet Dracula? Paul Williams is in it and sings The Phantom's Theme ... it's a beautiful thing ...

  • i got this movie on dvd i love it. ive seen it many times. this is my fav song in the movie also i like life at last. the movie colors and psychedlia is so great and paul williams is great as swan i hear they might be remaking this movie i hope they dont. this is an underatted classic . i think its better then rocky horror picture show imo

  • I have a video on my youtube account of the robot version when winslow is getiing his voice all you have to type in is raisinbran2scoop and there is no spaces and then type in phantom of the paradise obot version.

  • brilliant!

  • Paul Williams. From the 1973 film. "Phantom of the Paradise". Watch it and fall in love.

  • 1974

  • who sings this song???? it's really good.

  • Paul Williams

  • one of the best sound track of the 70s. great songs, great acting and such a beautiful love story with a dark side.

  • thanks 4 posting this !

like many of the comments i've read,i was also at a young age when my father showed me this movie! 2 him it waas a film that took him back 2 his day ! lol

as for me .. i really thought the story line was very sinister ! this is one of those movies u cant remake again !!!!

  • Une de mes chansons préférées sur terre.

  • My Daddy should me this video i thought i rocked and i am 21 years old i've been watching this movie since i was like 10. And i think they should just leave it the way it is remaking it would just kill it.

  • @beautybabe141 they're considering remaking this movie?! They cant do that!! I agree, that would kill it!

  • I LOVE this movie!!!!!!!!! They will destroy it with a re-make some movies are NOT ment to be remade this type of movie is a total classic. uhh they will probly ruin the casting with a bunch of hollywood "heartthrobs'' who can't act *sighs* they should totally can any attempts at a remake for the awsome movie. I love Paul William's songs in it

  • paul williams is a fucking pimp, he's awesome and rocks completely!

  • LOve this movie, and I Love the soundtrack. Totally underrated classic

  • me 2 had it in the sixed grade

  • it cant be remade punk rock died and this was befor new york dolls .brain dead fucks that cant think will flog a dead horse .u had 2 b there f 4 what about art

  • The New York Dolls was around when this movie was, their debut album came out in 1973

  • There making a remake of this movie. its coming out 2010 sometime.

  • Seriously? Why can't they leave this relatively unknown gem alone?

  • they will f up the songs .its like sevil dead without ash or clocwork orange without malcom

  • A remake shouldn't be necessary, it's good the way it is now. If they do remake, they'll torture Paul Williams' great soundtrack, they'll give it a cheap modern setting, hell someone else around YouTube said they wanted to make it into a hip-hopera with Snoop Dogg & Diddy to name a few in it. You can't turn rock operas into hip-hopera. Example: MTV's Carmen. Todays standards hollywood just like make films with big breasted teen stars who can't even act that would ruin the remake also anyway.

  • Agreed, this is a great movie and they should just let it be.

  • God help us!! :D Es imposible adaptar esta obra maestra a los tiempos que corren, sin arruinarla con los convencionalismos tradicionales, ergo: penjejos/as, efectos CGI, y quizas el colmo: Un final feliz :D . No, Thanks. The Brian DePalma masterpiece is unique.

  • Pendejos. Se entendió. :p

  • 20th Century Fox needs to get off it's ass & release an anniversary edition of this wonderfully done Rock Opera.

  • I miss this movie so much

I love this song as well

I love the Phantom, pretty fucked up how he became the Phantom

    nice work man :)

  • Comment removed

  • awesome song
