@KingMoses3 Not from a technical standpoint. His technique is extremely rough, and his chops are undeveloped, but that doesn't matter. He's a groove machine. He makes people feel good, and his playing is very musical. That's what is really important. That's why he is the kind of drummer that I'd like to be.
Charlie has feel. That's one thing that can't be taught. You got it, or you don't. You can have chops for days and mess around with your double pedal, but if you ain't got pocket, you ain't got shit..
Charlie, Keith Moon. Bonzo, Ringo, Alan White, Bill Ward, especially Keith. I know I'm old, and there are new talents aout, but these guys, plus their repective bass-players, are constantly in my own life- rhythm, while I'm walking, sleeping, running, etc. I wonder if anyone else feels like this? or am I just crazy? you really don't have to answer that, I know it already! Long live Rock.

No wonder his china is breaking, he has it on the wrong side. Usually chinas can take the most beatings. And I love how he per ounces "avedis" (zildjian)
Steve Vai may well be able to play a much tighter, and more difficult, technically superior version of The Stones Brown Sugar, but he didn’t come up with the sound, so he’ll never have the same success with it, or respect
Being technically amazing on an instrument means next to nothing, if you’re just improving on a long established musical style.
There are millions of amateur guitarists who are much better than Hendrix ever was. There are millions of drummers, all over the world, better than Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell and Charlie Watts.
you know i really look up to these guys like uncles i never knew but only heard about.and charlie ya just gotta love a guy with 25 cars and no drivers licsense
@jenarbey You´re actually on to something there. He´s one of the stiffest drummers of all time, but he has forged a style within the environment he´s been in for the last 50 years or so which is hard to deny. And it works very well mind you. But talented as far as drum playing is concerned he is not.
@swine74 I'm not entirely sure it's officially THE longest rock 'n' roll marriage, but I'll bet it's gonna be ;) I think it'll be 47 years this year...
This is not meant to be a put down or lack of respect, but I always have thought how wonderful it must be to play so basically, not being called on to stretch at all, and make so much money while playing that way! There is something very elegant about Charlie as a person and his drumming is perfect for The Stones. It is a vital part of their sound and feel. Still, to touch the drums that simply night after night and then come off stage, STILL RICH and not having to do anything but play music...
Charlie, the most humbled musician. I can watch this video over and over and enjoy it every time. I really like his detail regarding his kit and cymbals. I have been playing Wigs for over 4 decades, own 5 vintage kits and had to buy a Gretsch because of Charlie. He is the ultimate Engine for the hardest working rock band in the world, The Rolling Stones.....
I think Charlie Watts has a lot of class. He knows he's not a technically great drummer because he knows who the technically great drummers are or were and he is keenly aware and appreciative of them. He is the kind of drummer that keeps the rest of the band together because he's not all over the place showing off. No matter how loaded Keith or Ronnie are on any given night, they know the BEAT is gonna be THERE CONSISTENTLY, without fail. Yet unlike drum machines, it will have FEEL.
Charlie Watts, basically invented modern rock drumming. It didn’t exist until he came along.

Of course techniques improve over 50 years. Just as Steve Vai is a much superior guitarist technically than Jimmy Hendrix.
What I’m saying is, guys like Ringo Starr, and Charlie Watts, were “it” in regards to drumming, in the early 1960s. They were doing stuff, harder, more revolutionary, and better than everyone else.
Ringo was one of the top drummers in the country even when he joined the Beatles. Let alone by the time they were famous.
Sure, it looks dated now, and people have improved greatly since then, but that’s not the point
@snertster Very true about the whole drum machine. I love AC/DC's Phil Rudd and the Beatles' Ring Starr, but they lack, what you said, the feel of the whole thing. Those two are great, but no Charlie Watts :)
@snertster Dead right dude i remember a guy asked Charlie what he remembers most about the tours they did over the years his reply " Micks arse " lol. Great guy Always there like a good dad when you was a kid, love the guy!
i prefer ringo's work on the beatle albums...for me "a day in the life"..ringos drumming on that was amazing...my favorite fills ..but check out alvin stoller who was the man back in the 50's ...a studio drummer...arrangers like nelson riddle and billy may had to have alvin on their sessions...
I think Charlie is mentally very comfortable drumming but he definitely has a stiff posture, but I think that's just him. As for being "one of the best rock n roll drummers of all time" I guess that depends on how you judge drummers. He's not a technical drummer, in fact his drumming is rather plain. Not a criticism, just obvservation. However, he is amazingly solid and on time and unshakable. He certainly is notable if not, in my opinion "one of the best" proficiency-wise.
Charlie also has a reputation for being one of the best-dressed men in England. He cites Fred Astaire as his style icon. And Charlie's been married to the same woman, Shirley since 1964. 46 years. I wish I could say that for many of today's celebrities.
@Soler1441931 Well there are thousands of drummers that are technically superior to Charlie (or Ringo, etc). But he is good at laying down a groove, which is really what it's about. Which is also why the Stones will always outsell Dream Theater. The only people interested in fancy drum acrobatics are other drummers (I am a drummer myself). I think if Portnoy sat down to play Jumping Jack Flash he really wouldn't change it too much. It is the tune that is important, not how busy the drummer is!
@Lingontega I agree. Mike Portnoy and Charlie Watts are two very good but very different drummers. Portnoy knows how to be fast and flashy and still be in the groove. Charlie plays more simply for the most part but is still great at what he does and I'm in serious doubt that 99% of drummers could fill his shoes if he needed a replacement for one or two shows. I think Portnoy is better as a drummer overall, but Charlie is still great and he's likely the best fit for the Stones and their music.
@GamingDrummer89 I agree that Mike Portnoy is a more technically accomplished drummer, but you're also right that Charlie is the best fit for the Stones. It's more about style than technique, Portnoy wouldn't fit in with the stones, and Watts would be out of place with Dream Theatre. Same for all the well known drummers out there that people love to debate. It's not about who's best, it's about where they fit in stylistically.
@Lingontega Agreed completely. Just have to note that if Portnoy sat down to play Jumping Jack Flash, he'd probably fuck it up. Because he loves the cock.
@Lingontega Agreed completely. Just have to note that if Portnoy sat down to play Jumping Jack Flash, he'd probably fuck it up. Because he loves the cock.
A very big part of the Stones sound and what makes them recognizable.
There are quite some tracks on which some Stones members aren't involved (that much) or play other instruments than they usually do, but it doesn't really matter as long as Mr. Watts is playing the drums.
why doesnt he use felts if he wants to look after his cymbals, yeah it will cut the sustain a little but its a small price to pay to look after old cymbals that dont need to be broken
Charlie plays with such beautiful subtlety and finesse. And often it's about what he does NOT play, not just what he does play. He knows how to let the music breathe. When you listen to his drumming on a track like Beast of Burden or the outro of Tumbling Dice (where he breaks it down and then builds it back up), you become aware of just how sublime and compelling his playing his. And mixing his jazz chops with Keith's Chuck Berry style rhythm guitar creates an absolutely intoxicating mix.
You don't need to be Simon Phillips, Tony Royster Jr. or Neil Peart to be a master. For what Charlie does, he is perfect. No one has a backbeat like he does. Without Charlie, the Stones are not the Stones.
Charlie Watts can keep time and rhythm. Many modern players cannot. Charlie also has technique. Many modern players again do not. Many recent drummers can learn a great deal from Charlie.
I notice how Charlie holds his drumsticks......it's the way my cousin was taught to hold the drumsticks when he was learning from a professional. Rock drummers usually just hold both drumsticks the same, but you'll notice Charlie holds the left stick different from the right stick.
@Werribeesteve His grip is called "traditional grip". Holding them the same way in both hands is called "matched grip". Traditional grip is tremendously popular with jazz-inspired drummers, such as Charlie here.
@abvflux Thanks for that. I didn't realise the two techniques had a name. Is the matched grip something they teach or is it just the way rock n roll drummers who have taught themselves in the garage choose to hold their drumsticks?
@Werribeesteve Both are taught. It would be silly for me to say either is easy to master; however, it is arguable that traditional grip is harder to get a basic hang of as opposed to matched, which simply comes more naturally. As such, a drummer using traditional grip is a good indicator s/he's formally trained, matched self-taught. But don't disregard a drummer for using matched, as there are and have been many exceptional drummers who've used it primarily (e.g. Bonham, Moon, Peart, Portnoy).
What a lot of these "flashy" young,high-strung drummers, think,is more flash, more volume, more fast, more, more, more.I say, hogwash! This is what makes a good, quality drummer.Someone who can lay down a solid, consistent beat in a song, and doesn't slow down or speed up during the song. But stays consistent with the same tempo throughout the whole song.Charlie Watts has always been a very tight drummer, and plays with soul. Not like some of these "flash in the pan" drummer wannabes, that try to impress all.
Charlie plays exactly what his band needs him to play - not what he's capable of playing. There are a lot of flashy players that could learn from him. Especially bad flashy drummers. I can not imagine the Stones without his perfect drive.
I personally think he's better than Keith Moon and John Bonham. He's a well controlled and diverse drummer. He can work with many styles like jazz, rock, and rhythm and blues.
What kind of drums do I use? I use a Yamaha Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute and a Ludwig Classic Maple 7 Ply. I also use a Ludwig Vistalite and I use Paiste Cymbals. And I love to play to Stones music! I love Charlie's work. Very Inspiring!
@Doderhultarn89 Not weird at all... Paul is a multi-intrumentalist, and has played the drums in 4 of his solo albums. And although he's not a professional drummer, my point is He's better than Charlie! See?
You are a fucking idiot. The Stones aren't a band without him. He'll never get his due because he's in there with the glimmer twins (and he probably prefers it that way).
You said it! I have a theory that Charlie Watts will be the last living Rolling Stone. Everyone just assumes it''l be Keith, because of his near-mythological indestructibility, but I think the irony gods of the universe will make it Charlie. The quiet one who never hogged the spotlight. I will laugh.
@TheDirectorofFoo Great has many definitions. He's never been Barlow great, but Charlie is great for other reasons. But judging by your comment, you wouldnt get it if I explained it.
So who IS a fantastic drummer? What makes a fantastic drummer? I want to know what TheDirectorofFoo thinks a fantastic drummer is, and why Charlie Watts isn't one.
Look, I'm not trying to be a smart ass. His best drumming had to be in Can't Always Get What You Want. My personal favorites are Buddy Rich, Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, and John Bonham.
@TheDirectorofFoo You obviously know nothing about drumming. Any drummer of the hot bands from today usually thanks 2 influences....Charlie Watts and Ringo Starr
@Stones1fan4ever Omg, I never said he was bad. He, nor Ringo, were that technically good. They did some of the most simple stuff. And btw, most of the hot bands today suck. Nothing against you I'm just saying.
He's a great player, he understands two important thing about drumming that most people don't: How to do the simple things well, and how to make the complicated stuff sound simple.
I read an interview with Keith Richards where the interviewer asked him who had the meanest punch of anybody in the band, and Keith said, "Charlie Watts. I've seen him deck guys twice his size."
oh yeah! i heard that one - something about them all being drunk, and Mick shouting "Where's my drummer?!" up the stairs, and a very drunk Charlie coming down, punching Mick, and replying "I'm not your fucking drummer! you're my fucking singer!!"
i find that hard to believe though... especially after watching this video...
Mick supposedly called Charlie's room, drunk, at something like 4 AM and woke him up. The best part is how, before going to Mick's room, Charlie gets out of bed, washes his face and hands, shaves, combs his hair, puts on a clean shirt and tie and a neatly pressed suit, then goes to Mick's room, knocks on the door, then when Mick opens it, *POW*. The whole story was related by Ketih Richards in an interview; I don't recall the magazine. It's Charlie's preparation ritual that just kills me.
i didnt know the details, but that is just too perfect - im stuck between thinking that Charlie would never do such a thing because he is just too quiet/timid, but that also makes me think that that is the exact kind of thing he WOULD do...
I think 80's sounds right. I recall in the interview Keith said it was in Amsterdam, where the band had gathered to finalize plans for an upcoming tour or something. Charlie had turned in early and gone to sleep, and Mick & Keith went out partying. It was when they came back to Mick's room that the drunken Mick made the fatal phone call. According to Keith, Charlie's punch sent Mick across the room, and if Keith hadn't grabbed him, Mick would have gone out the open window into a canal.
wow! that sounds a bit dramatic! i dont suppose it was during the time Charlie was 'catching up' with the drug taking stage he went through?
only i've got an interview of the stones during 1999 in my favs, its worth watching - and Charlie mentions something about him taking drugs after the rest of the band stopped, and i quote him saying 'oh yes, it really fucked me up...' - im just wondering if it was around the same time, and if it had something to do with it maybe?
Charlie Watts has paid his dues mate look at the Stones back catalogue, he's a superb drummer and almost 70.... and recovering from cancer, he's got nowt to prove
@RJdrumguy well you're obviously wrong mate!!!he's the most comfortable man when he plays,he doenst even look at the drumms of how comfortable he is!!!
Charlie Watts is a good drummer because he never misses a note and always hits the right note, if you are a guitarist that is something that you love to have backing you up.

It's not about who's best, it's about where they fit in stylistically.
raizumichin 8 months ago
@Lingontega Agreed completely. Just have to note that if Portnoy sat down to play Jumping Jack Flash, he'd probably fuck it up. Because he loves the cock.

CHARLIE WATTS = ROCK AND ROLL
the drummer for the best band ever
matias1962 1 year ago
A very big part of the Stones sound and what makes them recognizable.
There are quite some tracks on which some Stones members aren't involved (that much) or play other instruments than they usually do, but it doesn't really matter as long as Mr. Watts is playing the drums.
andzwe 1 year ago
why doesnt he use felts if he wants to look after his cymbals, yeah it will cut the sustain a little but its a small price to pay to look after old cymbals that dont need to be broken

what kind of drum solo is that
AshDrums7 1 year ago
Charlie plays with such beautiful subtlety and finesse. And often it's about what he does NOT play, not just what he does play. He knows how to let the music breathe. When you listen to his drumming on a track like Beast of Burden or the outro of Tumbling Dice (where he breaks it down and then builds it back up), you become aware of just how sublime and compelling his playing his. And mixing his jazz chops with Keith's Chuck Berry style rhythm guitar creates an absolutely intoxicating mix.

charlie watts has a horrible technique. he even admits it himself. charlie keeps a phenominal beat nevertheless. one of my favorite drummers.
TheLegitCritic 1 year ago 3
You don't need to be Simon Phillips, Tony Royster Jr. or Neil Peart to be a master. For what Charlie does, he is perfect. No one has a backbeat like he does. Without Charlie, the Stones are not the Stones.

No Charlie = No Stones. Keith would be the first to agree.

@NightGallery I talked with Keef, and he said you are right!

@NightGallery That's exactly how important some drummers are to a band. It's the same as No Bonham = No Zeppelin.

Charlie Watts can keep time and rhythm. Many modern players cannot. Charlie also has technique. Many modern players again do not. Many recent drummers can learn a great deal from Charlie.
abvflux 1 year ago
I notice how Charlie holds his drumsticks......it's the way my cousin was taught to hold the drumsticks when he was learning from a professional. Rock drummers usually just hold both drumsticks the same, but you'll notice Charlie holds the left stick different from the right stick.
Werribeesteve 1 year ago
@Werribeesteve His grip is called "traditional grip". Holding them the same way in both hands is called "matched grip". Traditional grip is tremendously popular with jazz-inspired drummers, such as Charlie here.
abvflux 1 year ago
@abvflux Thanks for that. I didn't realise the two techniques had a name. Is the matched grip something they teach or is it just the way rock n roll drummers who have taught themselves in the garage choose to hold their drumsticks?
Werribeesteve 1 year ago
@Werribeesteve Both are taught. It would be silly for me to say either is easy to master; however, it is arguable that traditional grip is harder to get a basic hang of as opposed to matched, which simply comes more naturally. As such, a drummer using traditional grip is a good indicator s/he's formally trained, matched self-taught. But don't disregard a drummer for using matched, as there are and have been many exceptional drummers who've used it primarily (e.g. Bonham, Moon, Peart, Portnoy).

Charlie it's the best drummer in the word of rock'n roll!

he's a great drummer but his drum kit is rubbish on the later albums. The drum kit he used on the 60/70/80's album sounded great.

Not like some of these "flash in the pan" drummer wannabes, that try to impress all.
thecoolestdad 1 year ago
Charlie plays exactly what his band needs him to play - not what he's capable of playing. There are a lot of flashy players that could learn from him. Especially bad flashy drummers. I can not imagine the Stones without his perfect drive.

I'm sick of people picking on Charlie Watts. Nothing infuriate me more then to hear some young smart ass say "Oh, his drumming is simple". Really?
IdolHans 1 year ago
I personally think he's better than Keith Moon and John Bonham. He's a well controlled and diverse drummer. He can work with many styles like jazz, rock, and rhythm and blues.

What kind of drums do I use? I use a Yamaha Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute and a Ludwig Classic Maple 7 Ply. I also use a Ludwig Vistalite and I use Paiste Cymbals. And I love to play to Stones music! I love Charlie's work. Very Inspiring!

Well, he wasn't great but he definintly didn't suck. It was just he wasn't that fantastic of a drummer. He was the drummer for The Rolling Stones.

So who IS a fantastic drummer? What makes a fantastic drummer? I want to know what TheDirectorofFoo thinks a fantastic drummer is, and why Charlie Watts isn't one.
Salguine 2 years ago
Look, I'm not trying to be a smart ass. His best drumming had to be in Can't Always Get What You Want. My personal favorites are Buddy Rich, Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, and John Bonham.

@TheDirectorofFoo Charlie is the old faithful drummer of Rolling Stones. Most of all he ain't a bloody muslim shit, that matters.

Brilliant!
if there's one member of the band you don't f**k with, its the drummer. 2 reasons:
1) he's probably the strongest of the band.
2) this is Charlie Watts we're talking about.

@04hacketta
I read an interview with Keith Richards where the interviewer asked him who had the meanest punch of anybody in the band, and Keith said, "Charlie Watts. I've seen him deck guys twice his size."

he's so humble and nice!
still, i wouldnt put it past him; i reckon if someone pissed off enough, he would break them in two..

There's the legendary story about how he flattened Mick Jagger with one shot when Mick was making a prick of himself...
Salguine 2 years ago
oh yeah! i heard that one - something about them all being drunk, and Mick shouting "Where's my drummer?!" up the stairs, and a very drunk Charlie coming down, punching Mick, and replying "I'm not your fucking drummer! you're my fucking singer!!"
i find that hard to believe though... especially after watching this video...
04hacketta 2 years ago 2
Mick supposedly called Charlie's room, drunk, at something like 4 AM and woke him up. The best part is how, before going to Mick's room, Charlie gets out of bed, washes his face and hands, shaves, combs his hair, puts on a clean shirt and tie and a neatly pressed suit, then goes to Mick's room, knocks on the door, then when Mick opens it, *POW*. The whole story was related by Ketih Richards in an interview; I don't recall the magazine. It's Charlie's preparation ritual that just kills me.
Salguine 2 years ago
haha! that is hilarious!
i didnt know the details, but that is just too perfect - im stuck between thinking that Charlie would never do such a thing because he is just too quiet/timid, but that also makes me think that that is the exact kind of thing he WOULD do...
do you happen to know exactly when this happened?
sometime during the 80's i'd imagine...
04hacketta 2 years ago
I think 80's sounds right. I recall in the interview Keith said it was in Amsterdam, where the band had gathered to finalize plans for an upcoming tour or something. Charlie had turned in early and gone to sleep, and Mick & Keith went out partying. It was when they came back to Mick's room that the drunken Mick made the fatal phone call. According to Keith, Charlie's punch sent Mick across the room, and if Keith hadn't grabbed him, Mick would have gone out the open window into a canal.
Salguine 2 years ago
wow! that sounds a bit dramatic! i dont suppose it was during the time Charlie was 'catching up' with the drug taking stage he went through?
only i've got an interview of the stones during 1999 in my favs, its worth watching - and Charlie mentions something about him taking drugs after the rest of the band stopped, and i quote him saying 'oh yes, it really fucked me up...' - im just wondering if it was around the same time, and if it had something to do with it maybe?
i still cant imagine him...
