@Victorportillo1 Hi! If you have some time to spent digging for music, you can also go to the website whosampled which is a database of samples, remixes, etc. Check all the samples by RZA for example and you'll find tons of very good soul music like this. And of course, this website is amazing if you like hip-hop music.

Beautiful song. Darius Rucker sings the chorus at the end of Cracked Rear View (Hootie and the Blowfish). I heard a snippet of the song (not this version) in a film called Wedding Belles last week and thought I must look it up. Just beautiful

No child should ever feel like a motherless child true...but this song was orginally a old negro spiritual written during the time of slavery...a time when many were taken away from their families very young...many greats have remade this including elvis...great song
I heard this on ATL movie, and prior to this heard it sampled on Ghostface KillaCD. I think this song is so soulful & beautiful. i feel it everytime I hear it.
The Blessed Virgin Mother will always "show us the way back home" to her son, Jesus, and her prayers Jesus always accepts and honors (yes, even today). She still reminds the serants at the wedding feast, "Do as he tells you." She is the way back home to one and only true God --- She, the mother of Jesus -- Jesus --- who the "even heavens cannot contain".
Yes, often less callin' attention to yourself in fancy stuff shows more to the artistry. He lets the song stand out by making it true --- his feelings in the lyrics he truly makes his own in this performance. It's beautiful. And, by the way, we should never feel we are motherless children --- Jesus gave us his own mother from the Cross as the last thing he did for us before dying on the cross. "Son, BEHOLD THY MOTHER." The Blessed Virgin, Mother of God, is our mother if we accept her.
@wartown111 No, it is. It dates back to the days of slavery. It was common for kids to be sold by there slave owners. Thus "Motherless Child"
(The song is clearly an expression of pain and despair as it conveys the hopelessness of a child who has been torn from his or her parents.) "Wikipedia reference.

How did sampling lead to songs like this,slick7953? Sampling started in the late 80's/early 90's. This song is from the sixties. What the hell are you talking about? As for you thinking samples are usually cleared by the owner, it shows your ignorance of the music business even further. Copyright lawsuits have gone through the roof since sampling began. Sampling is a invention of con artists and non-musicians who are too damn lazy or stupid to learn an instrument themselves. Shame on all of you.
This song was sampled, hence I searched it to hear the original context(which only sampled a couple seconds of his vocals and not the instruments, fyi). Way to miscontrue a simple sentence.
A lot of people find old songs through samples, thus helping the music stay alive. Besides, if you knew anything about sampling you'd know that people who are GOOD at it don't copy/paste but create their own melodies among existing notes in songs, often because they can't afford real instruments.
They can't afford "real instruments"?? Oh, I see...but they can afford computers and pro-tools. C'mon, slick7953, don't give me that shit. As for people finding old songs through samples: don't tell me those gold-toothed freaks with their pants down around their ankles are thinking along those lines. Finally, I am a funk guitarist for twenty years. There has been way more copy/paste in rap's history than the more sophisticated subliminal stuff. I know because I'm a musician, unlike them.
Where do you expect them to learn from? A lot of people play from when they're young. Obviously they couldn't afford those luxuries until they were older and more independent. Plus, people are capable of saving money...
To be really skilled, it takes much more than the alloted time frame they've been given seeing as most them are already adults.
Your description of these people is extremely stereotypical and certainly doesn't respresent the genre's artists as a whole.
All of those 'gold-toothed freaks' are making bags of money for the owner of the samples' copyrights - in this case, someone (probably a record label) is making money on tracks featuring samples by OV Wright (deceased 30 years.)
A computer program that produces music is, by definition, a musical instrument. And Anyone who uses that is also, yes, a musician.
You may be a musician, but you apparently don't know rap's history.
Hope your career is going well. You seem a little bitter.
WTF? I know perfectly well the record companies make money off rappers and the rappers make money also. You are not telling me anything I don't know. As for you thinking computer programs are somehow instruments and not computer programs, I don't have a clue. A record player produces music, is that an instrument? How about an ipod? Is a DJ a musician? I may be bitter but Christ, you are a moron.
A record player does not produce music. It reproduces music without change - there's a difference. A DJ, a true DJ, creates something new out of already existing sounds, with mixed melodies, chopped beats, and juggled tracks. Computer programs like Reason and Fruity Loops manipulate, reorganize, and actually produce new sounds - unlike a record player. A computer may be disconnected from the end sound, but so is a piano (the keys only trigger the mechanism that draws the strings). Lighten up.
@wukillah92: That's a good point. I can't argue with that. But the way I see it, is how can soul music expect to have a future if people are always going to sample music from the past? Part of what made soul so fantastic is the interplay between musicians. That is dead now because now it's one guy with a computor and there is nothing LESS soulful than that. There is no substitute for people that can really sing and play their instruments. Everything else is fraudulent. Just my opinion.
