Other than the Battle of Britain, El Alamein and Ultra code breaking I cannot think of any British ONLY successes in WW2. After 1942 Britain played only an important supporting role to the USA who principally led, supplied, and manned the Western effort- while defeating Japan in the vast Pacific/Asia!!.

I doubt Hitler would have declared war on the US and public opinion in US was overwhelming to stay out of Europe's war. Not U but Arthur is a perfect example of the typical Euro-centric who denigrates the achievements and exceptionalism of other societies/cultures especially USA. She declared war against Germany when Germany/Soviets attacked Poland in 1939, then didn't actually fight for a while (phoney war period) and then in the end turned over Poland and central Europe (with American acquiesce) to Soviet tyranny which merely replaced Nazi tyranny? My grandfather fought for the 178th Scottish regiment against rommel and spoke of him as a brave man who comanded his armies best to avoid casulty and unecessary sacrifice, and when the german aremy would attack in the dessert war the troops would say "here comes rommel" because he was always on the front line with his troops

He was successful only in the early days of the war against disorganized foes who were caught unprepared for modern warfare. Once faced with organized foes, he failed miserably. The British like to build his reputation up because their triumph at El Alamein, while noteworthy, is thereby enhanced giving the UK its only achievement in WW2 before the Yanks took charge of the war.

@trfcfan1984 Actually Rommel at times did disobey Hitler's orders not to retreat in North Africa and was able to get away with it because of his favorable reputation among the German people. Other than the Battle of Britain, El Alamein and Ultra code breaking I cannot think of any British ONLY successes in WW2. After 1942 Britain played only an important supporting role to the USA who principally led, supplied, and manned the Western effort- while defeating Japan in the vast Pacific/Asia!!.

That cost us and a well organized German amry proved far superior.. they were well drilled well organized and well disciplined... Dunkirk was quoted as a great success and it was to a degree... but fatal errors put us in that position. We would have never have surrendered though out of principal.. I meant combined Anglo-French forces The French had more tanks than Germany for example. i agree otherwise with your analysis on Germany's superior quality of tactics and preparedness It wasn't a fluke. A similar situation occurred in Singapore 1941/42 where British forces outnumbered the Japanese, yet were defeated by British military leadership's ineptness and failure to "keep up" with changing times or modern warfare tactics.

She declared war against Germany when Germany/Soviets attacked Poland in 1939, then didn't actually fight for a while (phoney war period) and then in the end turned over Poland and central Europe (with American acquiesce) to Soviet tyranny which merely replaced Nazi tyranny? So, it couldn't have been fought for "freedom" as you suggest. In America's case we went to war because Germany declared war on us. Always a puzzlement to me
