Gratz on rescuing both MIAs from the entrenchment at the end of Mission 1 - I always have gotten one of them killed, most realistically, the NME would off him just as he noticed the chopper and started to wave his hands. Also,I think there were bonus points for destroying the fighter wreck. ;)

Those things are deadly, especially if you're slow. And most of the time, THEY WILL HIT YOU. So when you come across those, make sure you have full armor and pray that you don't get shot down.

You can't strafe? I remember I strafed throughout all of the game's battles, on Genesis I believe.

You can only do it with a certain control setup since fire button is weapons and up,down,left,right is turning and forward + back which leaves nothing for the strafe!

Actually, on the Amiga, you can strafe with a simple one-button-joystick. Just keep pressing the firebutton and move your stick left/right. This uses up precious ammo but it works.
