  • Anyone know what horn that is?

  • Are those SATX reporting marks?

  • Death to F.R.E.D. !!!! Bring back the caboose!!!

  • You should have said in the description: Notice the caboose! LOL

  • i live near old sp tracking thats no longer in use. but not too far from me is some bn e series a and b set (e8 maybe) and a old sp sd9 both just sitting and rusting. its a shame to see them like that. :/

  • @theamtrakvirus Where is this?

  • @theamtrakvirus Can you make a video of you climbing in them and checking them out because im really interessted

  • Might be a stupid question but where did the Cotton Belt run? Figuring close proximity to SP might explain the similar paint jobs

  • @ The SterlingLoopTroop- Pool power mean to pool power or to share and put together the power to the train from the SP and the BN.

  • The video quality is great from such vintage film... I take it you were using a camcorder with VHS tape?

  • WHAT DOES POOL P0WER MEAN?

  • The conductor really lays on this horn here. A P5 horn?

  • @NIGHTWHMAN that's because this is pre 1993, when ditch lights became required.

  • Check out that L window, how cool is that ?

  • If the SPSF merger had gone through, then we would have had three railroads on each side of the country instead of two. Plus, I know that SP-SF was monopolistic in the southwest, but it would have been far less monopolistic than UP-SP.

  • The first train has a nice horn. I have heard that horn a lot of times and have been wondering what type of horn is it.

  • Nathan P3!

  • @moonwalker5058 Nathan P5. XD

  • wow..sad we'll never see that again..definetely a save

  • i gotta admit, i did like bnsf's first paint scheme the great northern scheme isn't bad, but i also liked they're original nose logo with the santa fe circle and cross with the bnsf on it, they're new one sucks. its just a rip off of the flying rio grande logo, the D&RGW used for they're final yrs, which i do mis alot as well, and the SP. i do gotta admit i also miss conrail's paint, but i do like the new NS logo.

  • @ljones121

See my comment below to rockguitarist946...

  • @ljones121

Ooops! sorry I mean my comment to Milwaukeelocotrol24...

  • i hate the BNSF. its karma towards the rail industry for the SPSF merger failing. the SPSF kodachrome is much more attractive then this stupid BNSF paint scheme, and you can barely see a BNSF engine to boot!

  • I agree!!! I always wanted the SP/SF merger take place! and I loved the BN Green and black.. Thats a paint scheme that should have stayed. I hate the BNSF green and orange... I just dont like any of these mergers! now we are down to 4 railroads... i liked it better when we had at least 10 to railfan

  • well, the BN was selfish when they designed the merger scheme because they based the scheme off the great northern empire builder paint scheme. and really, we went from about 30 class one railroads to 6 in 20 years, and partly that was the ICC's fault for smothering the life out of the industry. and the BNSF has a lot of potential for a much better paint scheme, they should just use the kodachrome paint scheme, that wouldnt look bad.

  • @rockguitarist946

Since the combine is a "Great Burlington" the GN "Empire Builder" scheme kinda makes sense, hence empire builder. They did initially use the compass rose & font of ATSF for BNSF but that was to get the public/shippers used to the fact that the 2 are now 1. The evolution into the swoosh distances itself from both companies whilst retaining the heritage of the successor in color. This is logical & standard marketing practice, like the Continental-United Air Lines merger.

  • @CurtisTuch yes, but the BNSF merger was basically the BN absorbing the ATSF, and the president of the BN became president of the BNSF, so naturally he's going to pick schemes that reflect the BN, but they have to partially reflect the ATSF since it was so famous. that formula still isn't going to get a good scheme, though. they need to go from the ground up and design a visible AND attractive scheme

  • nice video, nice to see the old stuff sometimes

  • Wow, espee tunnel motors, a Nathan P-3 and a Mars light, brings back great memories of the espee.

  • you bet! i miss those days.

  • You railfanned in exactly the same spot i did the other day!

  • That CB&Q caboo...uh...waycar was a nice touch!

  • i like the SP`s old scheme rather then the 90`s swoosh logo. and i miss the BN engines without them having BNSF crudely patched over the proud name of: Burlington Northern

  • Comment removed

  • i love Southern Pacific's with the letters SP on the front as well Cotton Belt with the letters SSW on their SD40-T2 and Rio Grande's paint scheme orange with black stripes and the revolving headlight on Rio Grande's SD40T-2 don't forget Santa Fe as well with their dash 9's, SD75M,, and SD40-2 with Santa Fe's name on the front now they are being patched with BNSF logo on them and Union Pacific's logo on SP's and Rio Grande's engines.

  • @MILWAUKEELOCOTROL24

The SP "Anchutz" scheme was an adaptation of the italicized Rio Grande script you refer to. Since D&RGW purchased SP the combined company took the SP name due to its name recognition among shippers but the successor influence is evident in this "swoosh" or "Anchutz" scheme as I refer to it. Actually, I kind of liked it though I do like the [Times New Roman] "Espee" script. I agree with you on the bastardization of BNSF stenciling like UP does with their yellow "band aid".

  • Great Video nice horn ,,,,,,,I like the SD45

  • saw that Q waycar in berwyn il,maby 89' no camera, of course

  • I loved the Cascade Green BN locos; some of them used to run through the small town where I grew up along a branch line in NW Oregon.

It's too bad BN, ATSF, SP and even Cotton Belt are but a fast-fading memory for many people.

  • I agree I miss Rio Grande, SP, and SSW known as Cotton Belt and Illinois Central after when Canadian National took over Illinois Central's trains it sucks to see these former railroads BN and ATSF are still around known as today Burlington Northern Santa Fe or BNSF.

  • Nice MARS light!!

  • YES! The Signature SP Light-Pulse! lol

  • That's what you call diesel power!

  • why do u keep getting rare trains?

  • I'm ancient. I've been shooting video since 1981, film since 1979.

  • awesome video

  • Wheres Palmer Lake? just north of the United States Air Force Academy.

  • I love your 1980's train videos. They're awesome!

  • BN still hadn't painted all their vans by 1982? I'm surprised.

  • Wheres Palmer Lake?

  • South of Denver on the way to Colorado Springs. About 2 miles northwest of Monument on Route 105.

  • Great camera work and editing! The SP SD45T-2's prove you didn't shoot this video last week. :) What video camera did you use back in 1982?

  • It was an RCA, single tube, vidicon--a VFP-170 I think.

  • This Vid Is very close to were i live Cool!

  • Even though this is a video of SP power leading a BN coal train i'll make a exception to my Southern Pacific action playlist

  • Great video, gotta love the old power.

  • Thanks for sharing a rare video. I agree Bigboycarlos, This was a unique matchup. Keep 'em coming!
