I remember when I first heard this on vinyl in spring of 2007 and loved so much that I made a copy of the album from the LP and it sounds brilliant (same with Mike Rutherford's Acting Very Strange).
OK, so he han't got the best singing voice, but compared to 99.9% of singers nowadays, he is better. And he barely did any vocals in Genesis. That in itself just tells how good he is! This isn't the best song ever, but still fun and commercialish.
Wow..... this is nowhere near the greatest song I've ever heard or anything, but...... wow. Dude's NOT a bad singer, at ALL. He should've pulled a Phil & taken over lead vocals when Phil left, yeah?
Hey! I got an original manual for that Prophet 10 right next to me! If only I had the keyboard (very hard to find fully working and extremely pricey if it is).
Personally, I don't think it's as bad as some of you out there believe it is. He's not afraid to make fun of himself, as seen by the smiles on his face. Good song, Tony. And thanks for your contributions to the cleansing of some our our collectie ears.
@gonzataker There's a track from 1970 called Shepherd that Banks sang dual lead vocals with Peter Gabriel. It was a leftover from the Trespass sessions and was played in the BBC Nightride series. Might be something to check out if you're interested. :)
@oliverbueckle This song isn't the only type of pieces that Banks does. This was done in a similar style as the last Genesis album at the time, Abacab. I recommend you check out the instrumental track Thirty Threes from The Fugitive, for it is a better representation of Banks' songwriting. If not that, then check out tracks from The Wicked Lady Sountrack, which are closer to his progressive leanings, with early 80s synths.
This is the most cringe worthy thing I have ever seen. He may be one of the greatest songwriters of all time, but this dodgy Nik Kershaw impression was never going to make him a star. It's so disheartening hearing him talk about his lack of recognition. I'd almost feel sorry for him if he wasn't in one of the top most successful bands of all time. P.S. the bit where he's driving the car with the keyboard made me piss. And what is that lizard for?
@Penguinarmy69 He wasn't out to become a star, so there's no problem in that regard. A lot of 80's vids were cringe-worthy by today's standards, anyway. As for the lizard...I've wondered if the one used in the I Can't Dance video is the grown up version. LOL! No clue why it's there except it's an 80's thing.
I can link Tony Banks to the most epic 3-4 minutes of music i ever heard, from the keyboard solo on The Cinema Show with Genesis. This doesn't even get close to those times
There is some phenomenally 'slept on' material on The Fugitive. 'Man of Spells' somehow captures the Epic quality of early period Genesis in the form of a love Ballad, and 'Charm' is Tony's response to Symphonic-Electro groups like Yellow Magic Orchestra! He's a prime example of a musician that lacked the 'Machismo' or 'Myth persona' to stand on his own as someone who could captivate audiences. Doesn't take one bit away from his Musical Accomplishments!
Tony's vox are SUPERB!!! KILLER SONG AND REGGAE RIFFS! I THINK HE SOUNDS LIKE AL STEWART!!! THEY SHOULD DO AN ALBUM TOGETHER!! THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN TOP 25 USA, BUT,ALAS, NO....
Unfortunately, Tony never thought he had a good enough voice for lead vocals, so got others for his other albums. I LOVE his voice on this album, though.
I remember buying this as an LP in 1983, when I was in high school. I was sooooo proud of Tony for coming out in front with his own vocals. I found a CD copy of this album online and still enjoy several tunes off of it. "Charm" is a nice instrumental. Some of his solo work sounds very Genesis-y.
This song reminds me of my time during primary school. I had a neighbour who was a uni student at that time and he played this song loudly over and over again, lol...
Well, he normally sang backup w. Genesis, but he had a nicely distinct voice...it was bad to me that he mostly gave vocal duties to a guest vocalist on his other solo projects.
@krissyrose14 As one of teenagers who lived in Jakarta in the 1980's I can only agree with sabathiel01. For documentation, you may ask some radio stations in Jakarta who aired western musics during the time.

Nice song--Tony's voice reminds me some of Al Stewart. But I miss the synth solo from the album version (it should come in around 2:58, and sounds a little like the brief synth solo towards the end of the Genesis song Congo). Overall, I think was Tony's best solo album. However, it is interesting to me that the stuff he wrote for his solo albums never approached the quality of the solo material he wrote for Genesis (Mad Man Moon, One for the Vine, Afterglow, Me and Sarah Jane, etc.).
@raelraven2 : Have you ever heard Tony's first solo album A Curious Feeling? I think that one definitely approaches the quality of his Genesis material, and even exceeds it a couple times.
Yep--used ACF album cover as a wall poster in college! I know it's highly thought of by a lot of Genesis fans, but for some reason it just didn't work for me. With Genesis, I always feel like Tony is going somewhere with his solos. On ACF, I feel like the solos just sort of meander: solo for the sake of solo, ambient feeling for the sake of ambient feeling, etc. It seems to me that Tony is having a hard time on that album thinking outside his own personal musical box:) Anyway, just my opinion.
This is a bit complicated - it depends on how it's set up. A Prophet-10 can be set up as two independent 5-voice keyboards; a 10-voice instrument playable from both keyboards; a layered 5-voice instrument (one 5-voice set atop the other), playable from both keyboards; or an unique "alternating" mode, where it would switch from one 5-voice set to the other with each note played. Very versatile - but very complex.
Tony Banks has the same problem as Steve Hackett: Highly talented and gifted, but sadly underrated and overlooked. First time I've heard Tony sing :) Kicks ass.
This album "The Fugitive", along with "A Curious Feeling" and "Still" are among my favorite albums ever. Tony Banks' songwriting talent is truly monumental. The only member whose material I enjoy as much is Steve Hackett.
Peter Gabriel is pretty good, as are Mike Rutherford's "Smallcreep's Day" and Mike + the Mechanics albums. Phil Collins was alright until "No Jacket Required" and then he went to hell in a handbasket. =P
Heard this song on a British Airways flight from Heathrow to Toronto in September, 1983. I have been looking for it ever since. Absolutely the best syntho-pop of the early 1980s.
isn´t he a real darling? he is the smartest person in rock business and a genius of a songwriter! the atmosphere and passion of genesis is a life feeling to me! unpathetic magic, i pity everyone who isn´t into genesis!
I had seen a much earlier clip of this song, but not nearly of the same quality like this one. Tony might not necessarily be a front man, but he definitely is an excellent musician and song writer.
Sadly, he dont get the recognition he have deserved :(
Nice song and a good album! Thanks for posting it, but, Tony ,unfortunately, after being a prog rock genious and a wonderful writer and composer, never wrote again, many believe, those complex and natural compositions he used to have, and, sorry, but he ended up writing lolly pop songs like this one, And by the way Cured is far better than this, with all due respect!
Well, not exactly...You see if you listen closely, you hear many different rhythms and infact the music is indeed pretty complex. I wouldn't say at all this is "lolly pop" I'm not sure if it quite reaches pop. I put this song a few steps ahead of pop. This is an unbelievable song!
Thanks LurMan for your comments I really appreciate them, as I said, nice song and album, Tony is, was, and will be one of the greatest keyboard players ever! Perhaps we've all been pretty harsh on Tony's solos, but, because sometimes you expect more from this genius, and hate when it falls into too commercial (lolly pop), but let there be no doubt that this kind of composition is still within the natural complexity that Genensis has, we just wish Geneis would be back with the classic line up.
I see where your coming from completley! With the amazing prog organs and keyboards, all kinds, also let's face it, a lyrical master. And then does this. But, possibly if he thought he was capable of vocaly handleing the unique lyricing stlye, I'm sure this song would be somewhat different! But Yes, I do agree this is a level or so down from his usuall dense-ness. (Oh, and compared to the solo on "In the cage" The solos like the bridge and the "cut from the music video" one kicks ass!)
OH! And by the way, I forgot to mention this, Tony could've reenforced quite easily the singing and the vocals after Pete's departure, I don't know why Steve or Mike or even Phil didn't think of that, I mean, not exactly the front man, but as a back up as he did during some very early Genesis songs doing some Chorus for Pete, it could've given a very special sound to the songs with Phil as the front man of course, like for instance Supertramp or Blue Oyster Cult, which have two or more singers.
Oh, yes, like "The Shepherd" which is a goregeous song...have you heard it? They could have but didn't put it on Tresspass. Big mistake I think. You're right, I don't even hear Tony bank-up singing. Pretty much all of it is Phils voice recorded several times, it seemed to work, but I think it would have been better to hear the others. (and when we did, it was only Mike noteably.) Tony's just got that soft voice that would be perfect for any back-up vocals!
Well, in the "lolliy pop" Genesis era Tony make songs like Domino and Fading Lights that are great! ARTIST HAVE THE RIGHT TO CHANGE AND MAKE DIFERENTS THINGS!!!
I do agree with you, and as I had said it before, nice song and great album, pero, desafortunadamente para muchos de los amantes y admiradores del viejo Genesis, específicamente la era de Hackett y Gabriel, la comercialización de éstos proyectos caen en lo que ha sido obvio, música que no es trascendental, música que sólo busca ganar unos dólares y no el respeto de los Fans que hicieron a éstos músicos lo que son o fueron ...
tony banks, friedrich nietzshe, how much of a positive energy these 2 men are still giving to the world!! my first surprise was the spirit of gravity in tony's symphonic suite (the little man in zarathustra)my second great surprise is when he mentioned beirut lebanon in the when in rome documentary dvd;i sent to tony a big hello with tony smith when he was in beirut(phil's tour), i send him now my big thanks and gratitude to all that he gave us.
Tony should have fronted Genesis after PG left not Phil! He's got a good voice. And if they continued with prog rock, he would have fitted into Gabe's costumes a damn site better than Collins would lol
I would be rude back but I'm trying to stop doing that. You should look up "Tony Banks - An Island In The Darkness (2nd half)" and tell me he is useless w/o Genesis. You DBag (sorry I couldn't help myself what with the not being rude so long).
can I be rude please? this is commercial and uninventive. The true Genesis created something magic. This could never be magic. I'd like Tony to get back to composing without restrictions. He's useless without G. Sorry, I do respect him tho
No, this track was taken from Tony's second solo album "The Fugitive" from 1982. I once had it, but got rid of it years later. Well, it was at least better than Rutherford's "Acting Very Strange" and Hackett's "Cured", when they all used to take over the lead vocals after Phil Collins had started his solo career, lol...
i didnt realise that tony went solo. or that HE CAN SING! i would never have guessed he could sing this good. i agree that it is tender but maybe tony banks wouldnt have been a bad choice for genesis's next leed singer.
That's a nice sentiment, but he never would have wanted the job as lead singer in the first place. However, he did sing co-lead one time Peter Gabriel. Have you ever heard "Shepherd"?
Yes. According to the booklet that came with the Genesis Archive CD set, the song was recorded for "a BBC Nightride programme in 1969." Someone has actually uploaded the song here to YouTube, so you don't have to buy the Archive set to hear it.
I don't agree.....Tony's voice is not so strong. I DO LIKE IT but it is too tender, right for songs like this. But can u imagine Tony singing IN THE CAGE or MAMA?
I'm not sure Steve meant it as a compliment, since he was constantly competing with Tony for album space toward the end. Maybe he meant everyone else would quit, leaving Tony by himself. That's pretty bitter, heh heh!
Oh yes you are right just went down and had a look on my shelf to check it out and the record was produced in 83, I thought it was much later anyway, thank you to let me know.
wow like!!!!!

Heard this song on a British Airways flight from Heathrow to Toronto in September, 1983. I have been looking for it ever since. Absolutely the best syntho-pop of the early 1980s.

I've never heard Banks sing lead... he's a lot better than he thinks he is!

What a great song!! I´ve never heard it before, but it is so much better than all of Phil Collins´ solo material!

isn´t he a real darling? he is the smartest person in rock business and a genius of a songwriter! the atmosphere and passion of genesis is a life feeling to me! unpathetic magic, i pity everyone who isn´t into genesis!

@busisanclaire - "Firth of Fifth" is a single song that convinces me of his utter brilliance (or ability to be).

World Travesty # 4502643284:
Tony Banks, alongside being a godly keyboardist, is a fantastic singer, but is too shy to sing.
Goddamnit.
L34G4LM4573R 2 years ago 3
He's got such a great voice if he was not so shy he could have sung many genesis songs

so underated!
THEDEPARTMENTOFclonk 2 years ago 4
I had seen a much earlier clip of this song, but not nearly of the same quality like this one. Tony might not necessarily be a front man, but he definitely is an excellent musician and song writer.
Sadly, he dont get the recognition he have deserved :(
Morgena1 3 years ago 11
Nice song and a good album! Thanks for posting it, but, Tony ,unfortunately, after being a prog rock genious and a wonderful writer and composer, never wrote again, many believe, those complex and natural compositions he used to have, and, sorry, but he ended up writing lolly pop songs like this one, And by the way Cured is far better than this, with all due respect!
trevizons 3 years ago
Well, not exactly...You see if you listen closely, you hear many different rhythms and infact the music is indeed pretty complex. I wouldn't say at all this is "lolly pop" I'm not sure if it quite reaches pop. I put this song a few steps ahead of pop. This is an unbelievable song!
TheLurMan1 3 years ago 2
Thanks LurMan for your comments I really appreciate them, as I said, nice song and album, Tony is, was, and will be one of the greatest keyboard players ever! Perhaps we've all been pretty harsh on Tony's solos, but, because sometimes you expect more from this genius, and hate when it falls into too commercial (lolly pop), but let there be no doubt that this kind of composition is still within the natural complexity that Genensis has, we just wish Geneis would be back with the classic line up.
trevizons 3 years ago
I see where your coming from completley! With the amazing prog organs and keyboards, all kinds, also let's face it, a lyrical master. And then does this. But, possibly if he thought he was capable of vocaly handleing the unique lyricing stlye, I'm sure this song would be somewhat different! But Yes, I do agree this is a level or so down from his usuall dense-ness. (Oh, and compared to the solo on "In the cage" The solos like the bridge and the "cut from the music video" one kicks ass!)
TheLurMan1 3 years ago 2
OH! And by the way, I forgot to mention this, Tony could've reenforced quite easily the singing and the vocals after Pete's departure, I don't know why Steve or Mike or even Phil didn't think of that, I mean, not exactly the front man, but as a back up as he did during some very early Genesis songs doing some Chorus for Pete, it could've given a very special sound to the songs with Phil as the front man of course, like for instance Supertramp or Blue Oyster Cult, which have two or more singers.
trevizons 3 years ago
Oh, yes, like "The Shepherd" which is a goregeous song...have you heard it? They could have but didn't put it on Tresspass. Big mistake I think. You're right, I don't even hear Tony bank-up singing. Pretty much all of it is Phils voice recorded several times, it seemed to work, but I think it would have been better to hear the others. (and when we did, it was only Mike noteably.) Tony's just got that soft voice that would be perfect for any back-up vocals!
TheLurMan1 3 years ago
You can notice this especially during the "do what you want, you got to do what you want' section. Odd time signature there.
sonicdeath10 3 years ago 2
Well, in the "lolliy pop" Genesis era Tony make songs like Domino and Fading Lights that are great! ARTIST HAVE THE RIGHT TO CHANGE AND MAKE DIFERENTS THINGS!!!
elgranpedro 2 years ago 2

SparrowisSexy 3 years ago
I don't think Tony could ever be a frontman for a band...he's way too shy and introverted.
jhillst 3 years ago 2
Tony is not a natural front man and tends to shun the publicity, he hates being 'the man'. Great song and album this . . .
spokesmann 3 years ago
I would be rude back but I'm trying to stop doing that. You should look up "Tony Banks - An Island In The Darkness (2nd half)" and tell me he is useless w/o Genesis. You DBag (sorry I couldn't help myself what with the not being rude so long).
keyboardwizard90 3 years ago
can I be rude please? this is commercial and uninventive. The true Genesis created something magic. This could never be magic. I'd like Tony to get back to composing without restrictions. He's useless without G. Sorry, I do respect him tho
mensamoo 3 years ago
Useless without Genesis? That's as rich as Tony Smith's remark about Genesis being Tony's solo career. Complete and utter b.s.

Hi, can someone please tell me in whish album Tony has Vinnie collaiuta as a drummer. Thanks..
antesm98 3 years ago
i think its 'still'.
infact im sure it is.
vixystar92 3 years ago
No, this track was taken from Tony's second solo album "The Fugitive" from 1982. I once had it, but got rid of it years later. Well, it was at least better than Rutherford's "Acting Very Strange" and Hackett's "Cured", when they all used to take over the lead vocals after Phil Collins had started his solo career, lol...
mikew4001 3 years ago
i didnt realise that tony went solo. or that HE CAN SING! i would never have guessed he could sing this good. i agree that it is tender but maybe tony banks wouldnt have been a bad choice for genesis's next leed singer.
vixystar92 3 years ago
That's a nice sentiment, but he never would have wanted the job as lead singer in the first place. However, he did sing co-lead one time Peter Gabriel. Have you ever heard "Shepherd"?
Tracey6961 3 years ago
actually no. was it a genesis song?
vixystar92 3 years ago

But can u imagine Tony singing IN THE CAGE or MAMA?
just a personal point of view :)

Great song! Tony's music has always been really good- very much pop but nevertheless good. He's one of the most underrated musicians of our time.

Best Tony Banks song!!!!!...but why cut out the keyboard solo?

I suppose because it's the single version.

Editing songs from an album to be released as singles should be banned - it's a bloody travesty.

Tony's contributions to Genesis are emmense. Just ask Phil Collins...he is the sound to hear him tell it.

After Steve Hackett left, he said "if Genesis is ever reduced to just one member, it will be Tony Banks." :)

Could not agree with Steve more. Tony is as brilliant a musician as has ever been born.
ginasmom1 3 years ago
I agree with every single reason listed. Oh, and one more thing you guys didn't mention.....TONY'S AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TheLurMan1 3 years ago
I'm not sure Steve meant it as a compliment, since he was constantly competing with Tony for album space toward the end. Maybe he meant everyone else would quit, leaving Tony by himself. That's pretty bitter, heh heh!
