I don't think a Japanese engineer would devise/use Weber carbs.... why pass up the superior Solex PHH carburetors?? also, why would they choose to put that head on an L16/18 instead of the L20B, which is a vastly stronger bottom end? it doesn't add up when you consider all the brains and money coming together here...
@swimmerB0B I think they were looking for RPM with the 1600, and to meet racing class specs maybe they had to keep the OG block? And what makes the PHH so superior? I just have never seen them in use, and the DCOE's are at least still being built.
From what I known Japan didn't get theL20 engine, only the smaller version, even their bluebird SSS model used a l18

Anyway, my reasoning for the L16 was probably because the engine class for the race they wanted to enter was under 2 liters.
