@Wiiimzy ...well - true of course. What I meant was the typical picture of the North Pole melting - and therefore the water level rising...the problem isnt the "swimming" ice - but the landbound ice - (like at the South Pole of course :)
With -14degC record temperature and normally quite stable temperature around -25degC in summer and around -65degC in winter with nearly no sun at all - its on the other hand pretty unlikely that the South Pole melts completely while you dont cook elsewhere.
I love the intro. I watch it over and over. I wish I could find a program or something that showed the earth as water levels increased/decreased. Besides the epicness of the narration, I also like the way Universal animated it.
@melodymx86 We know that now. But that doesn't mean this isn't a great intro or movie. It's an alternative universe lol. Where there was more ice. lol. :)
Considering the 2 best days of a boat owners life (Jet-Skis included) are the day you buy it & the day you sell it. What's more believable here, that the polar ice caps melting covered the earth, or that boats & jet-skis could last & still run for a century?
Slowly but surely were turning into waterworld. Have you ever noticed that river you lived next to all of your life, the level just seems to increase little by little each month, each year? If you havent you need to pay attention to it.
@Steadyrock100 well, if the ploar ice caps in the north and south pole melted compleatly and covered the earth with water, then that would really suck. my guess for the movie is that, it probibly took hundreds of years, or maybey a thousand years for the earth to become covered in water. the fast simulation of the earth that they shown with the universal logo earth, was awesome. i bet it took 1000 years for the earth to become water world.
This movie is awesome. I don't care what any fucking bandwagon-jumping critic says. Hell, the movie is worth watching simply for that boat that Kevin Costner's character sails on. I love "Waterworld"
because post apocalyptic movies are supposed to have opening narration - especially this one, which is basically Road Warrior at sea (that is to say, on the salt water wasteland)
WTF they actually have this shitty intro explaining it with a narration? how awful. Even a half decent movie would just explain it through dialogue, or simply imply to the audience what happened.
i think people all around the globe to stop this happening if the ice goes we go all the lost people wild life and more i find it hard to belive that people dont really care its our world please look after it :)
This is the way the world could turn, if nuclear war doesn't destroy organised Civilisation, then most people's selfish limitless use of fossil fuels will inevitably do this to the planet. North, South Poles and Antarctica melt then we are finished.
i just realized... when was this movie made? and how did they know that this was going to happen. i mean if they knew about this BACK THEN why didn't they start doing somethign about it?
@halo41293 it's rather like it is today, 40% of everyone think's it's a big hoax and even if it's real why should they be bothered, so long as they have theirs.
@proadmin1 i see... also nice on replying to a 9 month old comment and wow i realized what was i thinking i dont think they really even knew that you know global warming and stuff i think it was liek fantasy liek this will NEVER happen so lets make a movie about it
@halo2maxifoo Well, I think it's not so far-fetched as this movie. I don't buy into the whole "end of the world" scenario, but we can have alot of misery when we have bad policies. So take something that is non-controversial, barring some miracle invention that replaces oil, in 30 or so years, we hit the wall, on fuel. 40 years ago we knew that rather definitively, and in the US in particular, absolutely no effort was made, whereas Japan, Germany & other nations have made very sincere efforts.
@halo41293 because even if all the ice in antartica and the north pole melted, the water level would only be raised 200 meters. Nowhere near the height of mount everest.
@Anthonyk312 Yeah that would still equal to about 700 feet, therefore pretty much engulfing all cities, much less those on top of mountains but still, you'd only be able to see the tips of the skyscrapers in the end if you would be out in the open.
Ice is more dence than water and takes up more room, you are correct. But that is why when ice floats there is always part of it above the water. When the ice melts the water only takes up the room that the underwater part of the ice was taking up.
I personally loved this movie, one of my favorites! In fact, I am currently writing a sequel to it, in the form of a television series. This film is the best, top notch sci-fi! I only hope I can do it justice with this tv series.
I like the way the intro. was set out..Brilliant. One of the best movies of the 90s. This film beats some of the action movies out on dvd these days...
Nice intro. But it can't happen. The sea level is about 80 meters for all the Earth ices, and less than 100 meters for the dilatation of the waters(because of the increasing temperature of the ocean). But in movies, everything is possible!
yes but what of other countrys like india and indoneisa or philipines?..plus we need those polar ice caps..because if we ran out of drinking water..we can only get it from there
I'm no scientist or anything but even if the entirety of the polar ice caps melted it wouldn't cover the whoe planet in water. The eart has had periods with no arctic ice at all. Cool intro though.
just figure that just Antarctida alone is bigger than Europe or Australia...and not only talking about the surface...but the huge amounts of ice in it's height...endless miles...not to mention the north pole...
ice has lower density then wather so in fact when ice melting and became water it need less volume. If every ice on whole planet will melt the global wather level will rise up to 80 meters from todays.
can you prove this? in fact where do you get your information? humans cant even accurately measure their own numbers, but you know just how much volume is contained within all the ice on a whole planet! sure glad your here to explain this stuff to us Einstein.
Earth diameter = 12 745,591 km - let's say this is diameter to sea lev. and earth is perfect sphere.
the highiest point on earth - mount everest - 8,848 km above sea lev.
sphere volume = 4,19*r^3
earth volume to the sea lev. = 4,19* (6372,7955 km)^3 = 258815300534,911307508875
km^3 ~ 258.815.300.535 km^3
evsl=258.815.300.535 km^3
earth volume to the top of Mount Everest = 4,19*(6372,7955 km + 8,848 km)^3 = 4,19*(6381,6435 km)^3 = 259894816747,544910112875 km^3 ~ 259.894.816.747 km^3
A pseudo-rational explanation would be a small ice planetoide that gets into orbit around earth. It breakes down into a ring of comets, water evaporating from these comets fall into the atmosphere and cause the water level rise. :D
why did the appalachins go into the sea before the east coast did?

...if the polar caps melt .... well try it: make a cup completely full with ice water and wait till the ice has melted...the water wont spill.
The water level will get higher if the climate gets warmer...but not because of the poles but ice bound on land...

It does indeed. Ice is a crystalline solid, so it is less dense than water. Now shhh...Universal must not hear of your treachery.

It's funny because The icecaps melting won't make the sea rise. Only ice on the land that melts and drains into the sea will cause the sea to rise.

evsl=258.815.300.535 km^3
earth volume to the top of Mount Everest = 4,19*(6372,7955 km + 8,848 km)^3 = 4,19*(6381,6435 km)^3 = 259894816747,544910112875 km^3 ~ 259.894.816.747 km^3

259894816747,544910112875 km^3 - 258815300534,911307508875 km^3 = 1079516212,633602604 km^3 ~ 1.079.516.212 km^3
i do not consider preasure because of continents volume so let's say it's ok
you need more than billion cubic km of wather to cover whole world and from that volume yon can make sphere with 1272,628694 km in diameter
btw ice have smaller density than water so when ice melt the water from it take less volume.
