lovin it cuz its my homeland and it is brunei. However its a Bruneian story cuz hes from Brunei and all malay states heard about god turning him to stone
I was doing research on reviving an original children's folk song "Anak Durhaka" which is basically the legend of Nakhoda Manis. Stumbling on this video is absolutely perfect and I am definitely inspired to maybe do a visualisation of my dramatic music revival of "Anak Durhaka". Great great job!! I like this very much!
Not really difficult, because it's a well-known story. Just a matter of getting the rhymes and rhythms sorted out. This is the longest song I've ever written though.
Malin Kundang is Nakhoda Manis (the son) in the version of the story that comes from West Sumatera. I don't think the widow is given a name in that version. Thanks for watching, Rose.
dear raymond, the song is lovely. as a malay (and i know this story as Si Tanggang), i'm very touched. been through your other videos, and it's really heartening to see your dedication to making music even at your age (no offence meant, just that we're, my partner and I, are younger)
It's a good story, and I don't think it has been made into a song before - at least not in English. I'm pleased that you appreciated it.
Making music has nothing to do with age. As a member of the Hong Kong Welsh Male Voice Choir, I can assure you there are plenty of members older than me involved in making music. Thanks for your comments.
superb. well done! im gonna learn dis song by heart as well n since d video clearly shows d tab for d song,im sure its not gona be any problems for anyone to try dis song out. simple yet beautiful. the story of 'si tanggang'.. perfetto~
I'm interested to know, now that it's a month ago. Did you manage to learn this song by heart? (Even I found it hard to learn when I sang it at the local folk society.)
This story was in the text book I used when I was teaching English in Brunei. Although it focuses on the typically Asian theme of filial piety, I thought it had a lot in common with traditional English ballads, so it would make a good folk-style song.
What a great video! Great presenting! Thank-you very much for sharing that. I feel my views are similar to yours when it comes to this kind of stuff. Feel free to drop by and post a comment on my YouTube as well I am new here and could use a little help!
Thanks for your comment. My wife and I often went to Kampung Ayer when we lived in Kuala Belait. We became friends with a very nice and hospitable family there - all religious teachers! The water village is a fascinating place.

Thanks for favouriting it! I think this well-known Asian story is definitely worthy of a ballad. I just hope I've done it justice.
