Ok, Simon, will try some fluted mugs in January, and will report back with results. (But no way will I ever do clay listening to the Bee Gees, never, nunca!)
I haven't tried fluting yet, but I have pressed reeds into the sides of a few bowls for texture.
I like your stove in the back ground. Is that propane or wood fired? I need to heat my work area, it got to -7C a few days ago and my clay froze. Does freezing damage clay?
Freezing clay changes the shape of the molecules from flat to fuzzy. Clay only bonds because each piece is stuck flat side to flat and once you freeze it it throws fine and looks fine but in the kiln it will split. Try it and find out! Very sad.
Give the clay a really good wedging and you should be good to go... Think about it, clay has been freezing and thawing for millions of years, then been dug up and used.
The fire is a wood burning stove , great for drying pots on top of , necessary in the winter ! Freezing / thawing helps to make clay moreplastic over time . Pots that are made & wet should not be allowed to freeze. SL
hey simon. i have sues that tecnic aswell after seing you do it.
i also made a eares bowl "lazy mans lugs" and a ethnic bowl you did. i did a nice tan glaze on the ethnic bowl. some aribic wrightin wax risiste the pored tarmicu over the wax. and some iron oxied line stokes at the base. look slike a achent bowl
Simon - I just recently made a pot very similar to the one you have there. I also fluted it. I fluted the bottom 3rd only, and I made my flutes like a flat bevel rather than rounded. I really like it. I also made an overhanging lid and added handles like you put on your casserole dish. Thanks for the help with fluting. - Skip

I love it when we get to see a pot all the way through the process. Please do let us share in your glazing and firing of this pot.
