interesting comment about being disconnected. I think a lot of people starting wondering that since '97 when Greedo shot first. Lucas didn't get why so many people like Han Solo's character and why him shooting first was a small but defining characteristic. That one little change sabotage all that.

What I don't get is why he doesn't do like other directors and release two version - the original and the director's cut. Problem solved - nuff said

@joeylodes Uh Lucas brought both th story and caracters to Empire, and he was excecutive producer and superviser, oh and he only epointed Kirshner a s a replacement, he i fact interfered a lot and co-directe V same with Kasdan, he in fact also sdid most of the writing. Those people only served as substitues, and he als brought both the moneuy and efects.

@reviewreviewer1 some of the directing, because Lucas was more skilled and care for the project he atualy took over fr most of the film and served as co-director, also he wrote the mahority of th screenplay. How can you claim Star Wars is Irvin Kirshner when all he did was do a small part of the directing for the second film, under supervsion, and directing somene else his idea. He was directing Luas his fim, and was supervised and actualy did less of the directing the ucas who was co`director.

No sorry, but we've heard the stories about how he was "held back" making the original trilogy and didn't get everything he wanted. He's gotten FAR too much credit for how good the originals were. His character and story ideas were horrible, like Luke Sywalker being an 70 year old man with a robot head.

The prequels, full control. And we can all see the results. Abominations. They weren't just bad, but he's completely tainted the entire franchise that he "created".

@Reclaimer77 he was held back by the technoloy, that`s it, it was mostly harder to do things, some things were scrapped, and he mostly co9uldn`t tell the first 3 more ambituous chaptersm, therefiore not gerting everything he wanted on screen. MNo person held him back and the films were almost entirely as he wanted too all it missed wasthe stuff the special editions had added. Yes that stuff wth Luke were earlier drafts, just because some stuff was repwritten and he change things doesn`t......

Just because he was held bacjk by technology what al films were at the time, doesn`t change he directed ececutive producerm and creatively supervised, consultanted and lead th project. Also the fact earlier drafts were different doeshn`t change that wrote it, how woul the fact his earlier drafts were diferent and it wad reewritten mean others wrote it, or something, when a writer has complete creative freedom, he still often makees rewrites!

My persoanl opinion is that George Lucas can do whatever he pleases to HIS films, BUT as an audience we have all the right in the world to complain and call him out on it. The only thing that annoys me is that the unaltered theatrical versions are harder to get and not presented nearly as nicely on the dvds. He can do whatever he wants just please give us an option of the versions we watch.

And we grew up loving the film the way it was. It'd be like if all filmakers went back and updated their movies. So like, gremlins woudl be all cgi and they'd get rid of the animatronics. The Phantom Menace was Palpatine. The menacing figure that few people saw, always hooded and never properly seen, doing stuff in the background but always in a way that you know leads to the empire. He's a phantom. Who is a menace.
