Excellent. Just on this one song alone, I was compelled to buy the CD and Im not easily compelled to buy anything on a whim. Very classy, sublime, smooth and arrangement and use of space between the notes is genius. Thanks to TheReturnofStephan1 for posting this musical magic.
SUPERB! Master collabo. Its hard to believe she didnt win the Grammy that year for best jazz performance( they missed it on this one). The entire album is perfect from start to finish
It's nuts that she didn't win, though arranger Johnny Mandel did win the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocal(s) for the album.
what a woman! cant help stop listen to this song! it seems she is whispering in my ears in a summer night...and i love the thempo and the phrases she gives...amazing!
I think these are Johnny Mandel arrangements in conjunction with Shirley Horn. What a combination! You should here this album on a good system. Blow you away.
Thank you Tracy...I might never have known about her. This song...I just keep coming back to it. @Renee I am not surprised this was on a Sinatra-type channel... You are lucky to have Sirius. Anyway.....long sigh....isn't this the most beautiful song?
@rpsmom lol @ I'm lucky, I don't have it, my ex does, I was driving his truck that day...and yes, this is the most beautiful song I've ever heard during my entire existence here on planet Earth! :-)
There is almost nothing more peaceful than this song. SooperDooperDave said "Entrancing," that describes this so perfectly. What an amazing taltent. I want to go to sleep and wake up to this song.
this was the song that started my love affair with ms horn. it is the most beautiful song i've ever heard. so simple, delicate, haunting, mesmerizing . . . love it.
no one - no one - will ever sing down tempo ballads as well as Shirley. How she could make a song sound so entrancing at this tempo is nothing short of magical.
I discovered this album 17 years ago, and even then, at 13 year old it was the most beautiful thing I have ever heard. I'm a woman now, and having experienced some of life's ups and downs, I am more moved by it today than ever... so grateful to have this music in my life.
Thank you for posting this!! This CD is magnificant! I love her reneditions and style. Her music lives on as I play something of hers everyday! Another treasured artist we have lost!
When first on the scene, people couldn't believe it was one person playing the piano and singing. Shirley took off 20 years from her career to raise her daughter. Diana Krall does just about all Shirley's tunes. Never giving her any credit.
Ah ... hasn't Shirley lived life. You can hear it. Beautiful soul.
@KenJWC Just breath taking! The first time I heard "here's to life" I just had to buy it. I get chills listening to her voice which has such depth, such a regal quality. Someone who has truly lived.
Amazing!! Rendition w/ Shirley Horn and Johnny Mandel!
I agree w/ Sooper dooper! Entrancing!
I can believe that this super singer/songwriter/dazzling pianst sounds so magnificant in the Jazz miieu and it seems as if noone has ever heard of Shirley and/or Johnny Mandel, arranger!
It boggles the mind, truly and deepley!
Johnny (Shadow of your Smile, et al., ). I love you and Shirley (great pianist that she is)!!!
I was amazed at the live version - it just sounded like this version but without the strings. What a perfect performer. What a perfect song - beautiful, magical and melancholy. Thanks for the live version too.
fabulously cool.

@idontpay It's definitely Italian for summer.
Summer, in Portuguese, is verão.
The composers of this song are both Italian.
