  • Awesome cover! Love this version from Exit.....

  • @golfdom1987 ...thanks very much. Yeah, I love the Exit version....brilliant live album.

  • Great cover of this song Rob. You are very talented.

  • @cwodragon cheers!.... just a lot of practise.

  • Definitely one of my top favorite rush songs. It's hard to find a single favorite song since they've had different styles' almost all of them great.

Looks like you have the right guitar for the job too, I've been looking at getting an Epiphone Dot for a while now.

  • @CascadiaTrucker ...yeah its a great song, as you say there are so many!!

  • I posted the One Man Cover video...would you mind laying down a guitar track (Lead) for me to mix as a group effort?

  • loving your work..struggling with this a bit..would you mind posting a lesson or tabs please?

  • @dwfan12...Thanks....but sorry not going to have time, I will try and help with specifics where poss?

  • no way is this guy self-taught and playing by ear.

  • hey can you put up a vid on how to play that? i cant find one

  • ...wont have the time short term to do instructional vids, sorry.

  • Very nice job on this one. i always struggled with this one a little bit. We used to play this one in a cover band i was in back in the day. We did 2 Rush songs, This one and Passage to Bankok. But you articulate this one very well. Your a great player.

  • ...thanks for kind words. Great you have been in a cover band, I only play for my own amusement and J Ladder is far easier without the pressure of an audience!!

  • wow great job bro!! i think its awesome to see someone paying such close attention to lifeson and lee's work and honoring that work properly. i know that they are proud.

  • ...thanks for the kind words!!

  • wow great job bro!!

  • beauty

  • @87access ...cheers

  • a feast for the ears

  • .....thanks!

  • has anyone else ever noticed that the first 4 notes of the palm muted riff after the synth interlude are the same notes from Close Encounters of the Third Kind????

    i'm really good at the 4:00-5:20 part..lol!!

  • Very hard song to play, even though it sounds quite easy, well done Rob.. Merry Christmas 2009 .. Mike (snowdoguk)

  • Cheers Mike...nice to hear from you and Happy Christmas!.....yeah I agree, sounds simple, until you come to play it....like alot of Rush songs!!!

  • One of my favourite Rush tunes.Well played.

  • Same here....and thanks

  • Great Video! What amp and effects are you using? You are really good!

  • Hi and thanks....in answer to the questions below; this was played thru a Flextone III, have since changed to a H&K Switchblade as the tubes give more depth. To cover these I use whatever i can get my hands on, but I mainly use the live DVD's and my ear!

  • Also, did you learn these songs through tabs, or just watching Alex? You are really good.

    Thanks,

    Dave

  • You are really good. My brother can play like you as well, but doesn't have to right sounds. He got a Line 6 Podxt live, but it is complicated. What are you using for your main amp in effects if you don't mind me asking?

    You rock!

  • @geerdavid I've got a load of POD XT patches if you'd like them David, just contact me if you do

  • the time signature(s!) of this song are ridiculous it took me weeks to get the intro right let alone the rest of the song but you got it perfect great job

  • cheers......you can probably see my lips moving as I am counting!

  • Excellent!

PW has so many cracking tunes... I'm off to Natural Science next... one of my ultimate faves....

Great stuff, THANKS for posting! :-)

  • thanks

  • nice...alex always comes up with the coolest chord progressions

  • its a proven fact older guys do rush better than the young

  • Pretty good stuff. I play some Rush covers on the bass. Check it out when you get the chance.

  • thanks...will do

  • MAster!!! idolo!!!

excelente la manera en que tocas!!

  • Very nice job, and I know that, the solo is very meticulous, full of emotion and feeling, tough to recreate it, and in order to perform it well, sometimes I believe that it has to come from the heart, the way Alex plays, I've watched all your videos, and I do think you are a wonderful player, but, if you just added some emotion and deep feeling to it, I strongly believe your performance would come out and flow very natural, in order to achieve these complex compositions we all love . . .

  • yeah, I know what you are saying, but its quite difficult to do when playing along to a CD and concentrating on getting it right! I find it easier to play more freely off camera.

  • Damn, I am rewriting because there was a problem with my 1st post. OK.

I wanted to say that your prestation is "what" I was looking for. I mean after one "strange" video, yours was minding me and pleasing my mind. The way you mimic and play but above all sound like Alex is tremendously great. Thanks for that nice shoot of yourself recreating with spirit one of the (to me) greatest moment of Rock on Stage.

    ~Al Biss

  • I was writing an idea to a tv broadcast while listening to Exit..Stage Left and then Jacob's Ladder. OK I need a visual fix. After one strange video, I saw yours. I must say Thanks for that. You obviously managed to recreate Alex Mimics and Playing but most of all, you reassured myself with youtube. Thanks very much.

    ~Al Biss :)

  • Great job!

  • shit, that sounds just like the original version! And where did you buy that 335, mate?

  • Yeah, it was a nice guitar...but its only an Epi Dot, although I've sold it on now.

  • Oh, okay. I tried to get that Lifeson tone with a Fat Strat but it didn't sound nice, notb even with a Les. But now I play bass more than guitars. I can get that Ged tone with a Signature JBass. What FX pedals did you use?

  • This was played through a Flextone III...now upgraded to a H&K Switchblade combi, which gives gives a much smoother tone due to the tubes, but has great FX built in.

  • Dude you are amazing!!!

  • cheers!

  • Dunno if you remember me from a while back... always liked your take but I said I'd one day try it myself and I hope you like it: check out my video response. Keep rockin' dude.

    Cheers!

  • Hey man.. it's been a while... I always admired your take and I said one day I would respond with my own version: check out my video response dude... and ignore broons bane, that was an accident.

    Cheers!

  • the intro is what i have problemes with. by the way great vid.

  • thanks...which part?

  • Very nice. Makes it look easy. I'd need time for this one, a lot of it. Thanks for posting.

  • you play far cry so good i know it but i cant get the timing perfect any tips?

  • do you mean the intro/outro?? i just wrote down the number of strums (eg: 3,1,3,2) and if you know the tune well, its failry easy to follow....well for me anyways

  • awesome cover! I tried learning some of this earlier! Hard song. You make it look so eays and u look like you have fun playing! :)

  • thanks....yeah, its a hard one, more for the timing than anything else

  • that was great, i love watching your covers, you do a great job. Keep up the good work!

  • ...nice one, thanks

  • You are fantastic. I am watching a bunch of your Rush covers this morning, and you've done an amazing job, especially given you're self taught and play by the ear. Now I've subscribed to your channel :) Keep the good stuff coming! Cheers,Arvind

  • glad you enjoy them...

  • sounds great! How about The Camera Eye!!

  • that's not a little ragged. That's pretty damn good if you asked me. Try to get The Camera Eye on as part of your repertoire. That woul dbe awesome.

  • That's awesome! A little ragged? Not at all. Alex is Alex, you are you. I finally figured some of this song out, which is one of my favorites of Rush. You got me keyed into some other parts. I'm going to go pick up my SG now. Keep it up. Try to figure out The Camera Eye next. Some of that song just stumps me.

  • thanks for the comments...Camera Eye would a great one, i've messed about with it in the past, but yeah, might have a go!

  • a little ragged, but not bad, you have done better work. I still say this song is one of the

more difficult songs to cover, it just has odd time sigs all over the place, feel free to pick my version apart :)

  • ...yeah, i really struggled to get this clean in one.

  • I originally tried to cover the live version

but to me it was difficult because there is not the clear separation between riffs it seemed tosort of blend. the studio version was easier with the exception of the layered guitars on the lead. but your playing sounded a little more separated like the studio version :)

  • Very, very nice my friend. Hats off to you. Any chance of seeing you do Apocalypse in 9/8?

  • awesome , not too many covers of this great tune online , or in general , 5/5

  • ...appreciate it, thanks

  • man, this is the top song on my live playlist, man oh man, come on geddy, please!!!!!!!!!!

  • That sounded great.

  • thanks for that

  • 5 stars

  • that was pretty sweet , i always get tangled in 5:18

  • thanks...so thats what is was!

  • nice work...difficult one to get with the weird timing. Thumbs up from a true Rush Fan

  • thanks...they seem to change the timing even more on the live version.

  • That was pretty good, you should try Far Cry thats a fun one to play

  • It was ok, struggled to get the tone right and timing at the end, oh well!
