Introduction to Jacksonville, FL

I was born here but moved away 35 years ago. Is crime there really that bad? Jacksonville has always had a ho-hum reputation. It's not as well known as Tampa or Miami. But people who live in Jacksonville seem to hate it. I suspect it's because Jax has a bible belt culture and southern Florida doesn't?

Ok I grew up in south florida boca raton, and I am going to UNF, at first I was in culture shock it is so nice to get away from these asshoel new yorkers and not drive myself insane every time I get on the road its also nice expieriencing the slight change in seasons there compared to south florida which is still like 90 fucking degrees in january

@CerealSuper Yeah it's hella hot in south florida. I visited Miami a few times in the winter and I would always find myself at the beach. I remember one time I drove with some friends from Gainesville in December. We were all wearing 5 layers, but by the time we reached Miami, we were down to the last layer and some girl in a bikini was walking around outside like it was nothing. Lol.

I lived in JAX for four years while in the Navy. You do not appreciate it until you leave. I moved back to Los Angeles and noticed how much I hated LA once I began comparing it to JAX. Now I live in Vegas and now I appreciate the beauty of JAX. Every place had negative as well as positive, Jacksonville is no different, but Its positives outweigh the negative..by far. I have decided to move back with my wife @ the end of 2010. See y'all there!!!

I am from Jersey and would like to stay in the East, thinking if VA, SC, or FL was an option, I'd choose FL first. However, I hear plenty of great things about San Diego, but don't really see myself there with my family. What do you recommend?

I have lived in J-ville since I was a little kid. I have also traveled all around the country and out of the country and believe me Jacksonville is a lot better than many places I have seen. Is it the best? No. Is it the worst? Not even close. If you don't like the place why don't you just leave? No one will miss you. It is getting to crowded here anyways. This video is kind of cheesy but I think Jacksonville is a special city.

Hate to be critical, the beach shots are nice and Jax has beautiful beaches! But it also has nice neighborhoods, beautiful architecture, and lots of activiites....like the best fireworks ever (and I used to live in D.C. so I should know)., cute club district downtown, many many parks. No need to focus disproportionately on the beach scenes.

Yeah, lots to do, but lots of crime. It'd be best to live in Orange Park, as you can still go anywhere in Jacksonville for the fun, but without dealing with the BS. OP is just a smaller town right next to Jax.

Some great memories of Jax in the late 80's and early 90's. I remember a place at the corner of Firestone and 103rd St called Teens West. A teeny bop club from the 80's. I also remember hanging out at a club called 17 South also in the 80's.

I remember when JTB was nothing but trees.

I remember when The Landing downtown was just being built. I remember when there were shipyards just on the other side of the Main St. Bridge.

This was a weird video. Does not depict true Jax at all. I am a native and this does not feel like Jax to me. Where are the shots of different parts of town? To my knowledge Jax beach is it's own city now. Bunch of shots of Jags but none of Gators and anyone that has ever even past thru knows this is Gator country. Friendship fountain? Riverwalk?
