Chromartie was killed with a handgun.

He was killed by extremely accurate shots from an advanced terminator wielding a modern military shotgun loaded with incendiary depleted uranium slugs. That is not ordinary ammunition (or your average shotgun) -- it is specifically utilised by the military for penetrating heavy armour. Derek doesn't have Cameron's aim nor will the weapon have any effect if it isn't of sufficient calibre and is loaded with depleted uranium.

The shot that took Cromartie out was fired from a handgun by John. It is more than likely that Derek's gun would be using the same ammunition, if not the same gun.

Only AFTER Cameron blew half his (armoured-plated) face away, exposing the vulnerable interior of his skull (what was left of it), which can be destroyed by ordinary ammunition from a handgun. It was merely a finishing shot -- Cameron's attack is what critically damaged and exposed him in the first place. If John's handgun and its ammunition was so powerful, then Cameron wouldn't have had to attack Cromartie first with the shotgun. Handguns like John's don't use depleted uranium ammo.

It just seems redundant to make a bunch of little bb's out of DU. If it was a slug then I guess that has more logic behind it, but it's still kind of stupid.

Makes more sense just to take his .50 cal, slap in a DU armour-piercing round and aim for the chip.

I guess that would be anti-climactic though lol.

I agree, but apparently the shotgun she used is frequently utilised by the military, so I suppose it is possible that it was designed for both DU and ordinary ammunition.

There is a high probability that -- as you said -- the real reason was aimply for the sake of drama. It was Cromartie's last stand after all.
