My excuse? My Excuse is that you make up the facts as you go along. The lowest number of readers of RS is the 18-24 age group. There are twice as many readers in ages 25-54. You see they need to know these things scientifically so that they can sell advertising. They even post the information online where people who actually want to know what they are talking about can look it up.

Well in that context, I meant that to point to it as a major publication. Major publications of all kinds have a reliability element to them because they can be sued for slander if their information isn't accurate. The format doesn't really matter.
So you making fun of Rolling Stone doesn't change the fact that their lawyers vetted all of the content and determined that they can't be sued for presenting false facts.

The strongest charges coming from the McCain/Palin camp, on the other hand, have been debunked by several sources and they continue to repeat them anyway.
Following the crowd usually means repeating ideas that aren't true just because a lot of people keep repeating them. The McCain/Palin followers are the text book definition of this.

Ted Sampley and the work he did with the POW/MIA families led to people like McCain being released from the POW camps. His research work into Vietnam led to the identification of the remains at the "Tomb of the unknown soldier" and the Pentagon was forced to confirm it with tests because of the pressure he created.

In the Iraq War he called the family of A-6 pilot Robert Wetzel and told them their son had been carved to pieces by an angry crowd of Iraqis, but "the Pentagon doesn't want anybody to know this".
Lt. Wetzel returned home intact -- Sampley later unapologetically admitted he did it to "publicize the plight of MIA's".
He made money off promoting others' suffering, and deserves the scorn of every respectable veteran.

John McCain has demonstrated he is willing to lie to make himself look good in this campaign. Given that and the way he tells this "release offer" story in particular, I don't know why I should believe the biography McCain wrote himself or the interviews he gave about what happened to him.

Wrong. I personally know another former 'guest' of the Hanoi Hilton -- he didn't know John McCain -- almost nobody did. They risked their lives by just tapping morse code on the wall. They were lucky just to know the names of anyone else who was there, or how many, let alone know them personally.
Bottom line they weren't allowed to mingle until late in the war -- much later than his confession under duress.
The Code of Conduct has been around since 1955, with minor changes.

I REMEMBER VERY WELL the controversy surrounding John McCain during the Vietnam War. After he was liberated he was ashamed of the many documents he signed while a POW along with probaganda films he made for the ennemy blaming the USA for bombing schools & hospitals. He felt he had dishonored his father & country.
All this is now "CLASSIFIED" & pushed under the rug, not to resurfaced for 50 yrs, like Bush's own classified military records.
He has re-invented himself to hide his past.

Lincoln wasn't a lousy student. He was a self educated man who passed the bar exams to become a lawyer. You don't pass the bar on your own without being a good student, even if you are your own teacher.
If McCain taught himself everything he knows and then passed all necessary tests to get a command position in the navy because of it, that might be remotely close to your Lincoln example.
Being at the bottom of the class in a formal education, with all it's advantages, is quite different.

McCain voting with Bush when he was so popular only says that he isn't a maverick after all. Obama's position on the war was very unpopular at the time, making him the real maverick in that situation.
