It isn't debatable that Austin is the greatest! The number of titels you win or the great matches you've had sure help for your legacy but at the end of the day it's all scripted! At the end of the day what matters is how much money you made for the business in merchandise, t.v. ratings and attendace figures and Austin broke all those records. Cena may be the top guy now but he's the big fish in the small WWE pool of today. Even the Attitude Era's lesser stars drew more than Cena.

@lancem00 When I mean't lesser stars, I didn't mean low card stars. For lack of a better word, I was referring to those who were main event guys but not on the level of Austin and Rock. Guys like Kane, Undertaker, Big Show, HHH etc. Those guys were never the poster boy of WWE but had the star power to be. They just happened to be in their prime at a time when talent was so deeper. Face it! Today's talent pool can't even compare. You have Cena, Orton, The Miz and then... who???

@lancem00 I loved the Attitude Era but I don't want it to come back because if there's anything I've learned as a fan, recycling old storylines is the worst thing. All I want is for WWE to get a better writing staff for better storylines and push the right people and maybe a little PG-13 won't hurt. The storylines are stale. I always in my mind would compare the Austin Era/Attitude Era to Beatlemania because both Austin and co. were a worldwide phenomenon like The Beatles yet their stay at the top was short-lived but at the end of the day, what they achieved in that short span of time was greater in number and cultural impact than any of their peers could even dream of doing in even 20 years.

@MUNDOM316 Also 2000 was WWE's most profitable year in their history. Vince McMahon isn't even a billionaire anymore and there always articles online about how WWE isn't doing stellar business. Attendance figures are down, t.v. ratings down, PPV buys most definitely hit the hardest and I'd say what's keeping WWE alive is their emphasis on merchandise and Mattel toys unlike in the Attitude Era, every aspect of the business was breaking records. I'm not being biased. It's just a fact.

@Mr1131988 think about it the real Attitude Era was only like 4 years the most ('98-'01) & its been pg for too damn long now. especially since the wwe's only competition is tna the writers & vinces greedy ass doesnt have to work as hard. i hate to say that pg probably is making more $ but that dont mean shit to me the Attitude Era was much more entertaining. unlike today it was very unpredictable, suspenseful, & just straight up fun to watch. The Attitude Era was gone by 2001 but their product was still pretty edgy til they turned PG in 2008. Anyway Stone Cold was wrestling in the WWE longer than the Attitude Era existed so, he's still the bigger money maker than John Cena can even dream of being. Cena has to try to catch Hulk Hogan first.

It only proves no one else in the company is a good draw whereas during Austin's time, there was an influx of talent and bankable stars. The year 2000 is WWE's most profitable year ever so where are Cena's records? It sure isn't the number of world title reigns coz obviously Ric Flair is the 16-time champ.
