Sound is a pressure wave in matter, by definition it cannot exist in a vacuum. Electromagnetic waves are different, but they do share some math in common and it is easy to convert sound to electricity (think microphones) or electricity into sound (think speakers).

Have you ever heard nearby speakers make an annoying buzzing sound when your cell phone is receiving a call? This is the same thing NASA is doing when they "listen" to radio waves (or other radiation).
