There is a great book by David Sylvester entitled "Looking at Giacometti".
My take on the two sculptures of which you speak (standing females) is they exist as both prostitutes & goddesses. Their gazes are confronting. The elongation & surface shows the figure as fragile & temporary. The space or "aura" around the figures as pure energy. I think that he was showing his visual impressions & memories of what he actually saw.
Also check out the books by James Lord. He wrote a few. I would also look into some of the filmed & aural interviews.
