Love is so misunderstood in so many ways.....I believe their's was genuine. The media was and is still to this day out for the coin. Part and parcel of living in the limelight I suppose but jeez....how can they all be so heartless? They loved each other. That deserves a little respect in my mind.
"When you're dead you don't take nothing with you but your soul" - a classic ! Thanks for the lyrics, first time I understood completely what John was singing.
lennon, great guy, great artist, anti christ though...he thought he was christ, he wanted to be like christ...he inspired lawlessness, the devil blessed his ass.
"the way things are going they are going to crucify me"
after an LSD trip, he got the beatles together to tell them he was christ.
"the beatles are bigger than jesus"
and in 1970, look familar?
former friend:"john was jealous of jesus, he wanted to be jesus with a guitar"
@bobu46, i'm a huge Beatles fan but to be honest they were just a pop band before they got into drugs and came to the states, I know it wasn't because they were drugged up that caused them to write such great music and become revolutionary but I think the things they were getting into certainly helped to expand their perspectives.....Yoko on the other hand I can't stand, she would sit on in their recording sessions and completely influence John, a total creative cock block.
i was just watching John Lennon Imagine on Vh1Classic, and when they were playing this song, for some reason, they dubbed out the word "Christ" in the line "Christ, you know it ain't easy....". not sure why they did that.
John and Paul were the only beatles in studio when this song was recorded. George was on holiday, and Ringo was filming a movie. Paul is playing the majority of instruments including: Bass, Drums, Piano, Tambourine, and maraccas. John is playing rythym and acoustic guitar. A perfect example of a great song with only 2 beatles recording it.
the Beatles without drugs - without their guru - without Yoko Ono - a.s.o. -
four friends - what great music would they have given to us - every time I remember this I could cry . . . . . . . really ! I hate that guru and I hate Yoko - sorry !
@bobu46 Your right!! Sorry too.... but it makes you think, that if John had never met Yoko, then he might be alive. I know it wasn't her fault he got shot, but still!!
I think this (great) song was the end of the Beatles - but not really - the end began with their guru and his influence and (bad) ideas - nevertheless two strong characters at the same time - PAUL and JOHN - no chance - what a pity !!
@andergongar technically, it is a ballad, its just that in modern times the term "Ballad" usually refers to a love song, which this is not, but this song does fit the technical definition of what a "ballad" is supposed to be.
i dunno why i love Paul's back-up vocals in this song, i think they're amazing!! i love this song, i don't like Yoko much... i only like her cause she made John happy :')

Lyrics are not correct. John is clearly saying news people, not newspapers. He is referring to the news reporters.

Not a criticism, but a compliment: this sounds like the intro song to a killer sitcom that gets canceled way too soon.
