I like the modern twist on the old Hammer films when this film suddenly takes the situation out of the gothic fantasy and into a real situation when the Policed turn up to witness the heroic vampire hunter in the act of apparently murdering someone.
I loved this late night cult TV series as a teenager but I never knew about this pilot made for tv movie. As a fan of the British Hammer horror movies I can see that this movie climax is clearly based on the early Dracula movies with the Peter Cushing vs Christopher Lee final battles. The only difference was they mostly took place in a church and Van Helsing (Peter Cushing) had no one to come to his rescue.
This scared the hell out of me has a toddler. This is how vampire movies should be made. Twilight has made the vampire sappy, and able too go out into the sun. ect.
allegorically, kolchak is the tea party, the vampire represents the politicians and the woman on the bed is the treasury, which is being sucked dry. the vampire challenges the tea party in the closet but then realizes the TP has great power. then the tea party pulls the curtain back on the politicians exposing them to the light of day. the sheriff, that would be the attorney general holder who refuses to admit that the politicians are at fault and puts the tea party in jail.
I just watched Let Me In. Anyone think Abby could defeat Skorzeny? I've heard that a vampire's strength increases with age, and Abby is much older than Skorzeny. He's powerful, but so is she. And she's fast as hell.
That crap that was stuck in his throat really did him in. Seriously though. Miss the days when vamps had a regular set of fangs and didn't turn to Hewlett in the sunlight
johnny depp is planning a remake of this film . all I can say is I hope tim burton is`nt involved , cant take much more of his overblown crap ! pretty sure the`ve screwed up dark shadows . the photos that have been leaked show a barnabas collins who could be a ringer for michael jackson !
LOL! I thought the squishy sound that was supposed to sound like blood gushing out when Kolchak drove the stake through the vampire's heart was hilarious! Atta a boy! Let him have it Kolchak! One of the best creepy TV shows on TV back then. Darren McGavin was great!
Sure, but it's also a part of the exorcism involved in destroying the vampire.
It has it's origins in necromantic magic, where you staked the corpse that was being pumped for information after you were done,so it couldnt be used by anyone ever again.
It was intended to pin the corpse to the burial site so it couldnt seek revenge.
Those ABC tv movies of the week were so good. I loved them, Duel, Go ask Alice, Bad Ronald, Isn't it shocking, Tribes. So many great ones. The first time I ever saw Darrin McGavin was on an episode of Mannix were he played the villain who knew karate and he kicked the crap out of Mannix. Of course Dark Shadows was my favorite show when it was on.
yeah that scene STILL freaks me out ...Fact: this movie at the time became the most watched tv made move in history to that time...kudos to a great script and acting...and great soundscore too
As a kid i'd stay up until midnight to catch an episode every week. It didn't matter if i've had to attend school the next morning! I enjoyed the late night suspense and funny moments from Darren McGavin and Simon Oakland and on this pilot episode, swell, Sheriff Lobo!! (Claude Akins)
OHH, Me and my brother use to absolutely love watching this back in the early 90's. it was the only thing we ever agread on! Boy i miss those late nights.
@Avatarblackwolf The 70's! you must have watched the origional airing. Was there a movie of this then? I only saw the series witch was a late night repeat(rerun) in about 1991/92.
@morrismagic08 This is the movie, made in 1972, I was 10 & it scared the hell out of me. The 2nd movie was in 1973 called "the night strangler". I have both movies and the 1 year TV series on DVD. They brought back the TV series a few years ago but it was nowere near the orginal. I have all 6 shows on DVD, did not last past 4 shows before it got axed. You can get both movies & TV series on DVD. Please look for them. They are classic!
there is lots of anit goverment and beurauacratic overtones in this movie but hey it came out in the early 70,s when vietnam, kent state, the invasion of cambodia were still on minds of americans as was the nixon administations. This movies symbolises the huge mistrust the americans had with their govermentKolchak the average guy champion of the truth, and the big bad politicains and beaurcrats hell bent on covering up their mistakes and saving their asses at the expense of kolchak.could be wrong
I just got the entire series on dvd. It was my favorite tv series when I was a kid and I hadn't seen them since. I forgot how cool the music was, a mix of Dirty Harry style acid jazz and psychadelic rock riffs. Also forgot how little time they devoted to the commercials in the 70's. They're all approx.51 minutes long.
Chris Carter producer of the X-Files has often stated that Night Stalker was "father of the X-Files" he heve had Daren McGavin star in several show fo X-Files as the original supposed FBI agent who started the fictional X-Files cases. In tribute to Daren McGavin who fought tooth and nail to keep Night Stalker on the air back in 1970s knowing full well that their was fan base out there for paranormal shows.
This was an awesome movie and a great series, short as it was ... a helluva lot better than the really horrible adaptation of the Harry Dresden books (the books are great; it was the TV show that was gawdawful).
The problem with the show was it was only 30 minutes long, 10 minutes of commercials = 20 minutes of show. Also these shows usually don't last very long cause there is only so many monsters. When you run out, shows over.
I remember watching Atwater, when I was a kid, as a vulcan. When the original Star Trek was in syndication. I didn't put two and two together that he was the vampire until later on. I was only 9 or ten at the time. But he was a great actor. Too bad he didn't have any lines in the Night Stalker. But having him snarling like an animal makes him more evil. Scared me too death then, & had too sleep with the lights on. looked under my bed, and told my dad leave my closet door open. lol. g8t memories
I was 8 years old when this movie first aired. Had too sleep with the light on all night. My dad, laughing, if you are scared by it, why did you watch it? I don't know, I liked being scared then. lol
The music is fantastic. Robert Colbert also did " Dark Shadows" my favorite show as a kid. I got to meet Lara Parker at a booking signing. So sweet and still hot.
Atwater had such an evil looking face in this vampire role. Probably one of the best vampires ever. I might be wrong but the music here eerily reminds me of the music in the 1st Salem's Lot movie with David Soul.
Thank you shannonD68. You're right, Barry Atwater played the vampire. He was a first rate bloodsucker. Also, the series had an episode called "The Vampire." It featured a female Nosferatu. She was scary too. Beautiful babe with a bad bite. Check it out on DVD. Interesting how all these new vampire movies and TV shows are coming out. Metaphors for the economy sucking the life out of us?
Kolchak was the best!!! Darren McGavin was great even when he was fighting guys in rubber monster suits. Some of the FX in the old shows were silly, but McGavin was always superb. RIP Night Stalker!!! Let's not forget Simon Oakland, either. What an actor!!! I own the whole series on DVD, and I never get tired of watching it. I love the one with Lara Parker as the witch. What a sexy evil babe!!! Dan Curtis Forever!!!
Great post andyshorrors. I think that this was one of the scariest portrayals of a vampire to date. The vampire never spoke and made some very believable cat-like growls. This scared the shit out of me as a 5 year old. The theme music still reminds me of this episode. i think the vampire was plyaed by Barry Atwater.
Go Kolchak! Go! That's one of the best childhood memories that i have from growing up in the seventies, they don't make shows like that anymore. We use to watch it every friday night, i couldn't wait.
Dan Curtis sure knew how to make a great scary flick. Robert Colbert was the master who made the music. McGavin was perfect for the part. It's sad when you think, every one of the main actors is probably dead by now. Where does the time go?
I am siding with the Vampire. First of all Kolchak broke into his filthy home completely unenvited. I also think that the Vampire was not too concern about his dump (his home). In my opinion the Vampire should have hired a house keeper.
Pound for pound, one of the scariest endings ever!.Barry Atwater made your ass scared with just those eyes and those teeth. He never spoke during the entire flick....But he didn't have to! I saw this when it first came out and it scared the living shit outta me!
This movie is scary on two levels - the obvious horror elements but also the scary nature of how bureaucracy works. Despite being right, Kolchak is forced out of town, and his lover disappears completely. THAT is what Darren McGavin said the movie was really about, an element that was missing from the series and why it became just another boo-scare anthology show - missing the point in general. Obviously the X-files maintained that element in its derivation.
Great scene from a great movie. It should have been released at the theaters instead of being made-for-tv. Most films that are theatrical releases can't hold a candle to this movie.
Chris Carter grew up with Kolchak as did I back in the 1970s . It was an influence on his creation the X-files . I remember the advertisements for "Night Stalker" on ABC? and waited and waited for it to come out . I was glued to the T.V as many people were .when it arrived . The sequel was "The Night Strangler" also a good movie . Then came the series . Its a little corny by todays standards .
Atwater played a great vampire, maybe the best non-Count-Dracula vampire ever. IIRC I worked at a video store and the Kolchak tv show episode with "the vampire" Kathryn Rawlings was on it along with a show about a robot. Kathryn Rawlings in the show was a victim of Janos Skorzeny. She is awakened 3 years after she was bitten by highway const. tearing up earth. She ends up travelling to LA
just as Kolchak arrives in town to cover the USA tour
This is the classic night stalker, I watched as a kid. I wonder if the video is out for the one about the sexy brunette vampire babe, that Kolchak fought on the beach

They did do several episodes on the series where the corrupt government aspect was used quite well.
Mr. R.I.N.G.,The Sentry, They Were They Are They Will Be,and Primal Scream.
the black ops boys were all over the place in those.
and Kolchak was even doped up and 'debriefed' in R.I.N.G.
So much for the common man 's control over his elected representatives.
