Hey Nick Looking to decide on a radio for myself&eying the ICOM IC7000 or a Kenwood. You still like your ICOM?Im a new ham&got my techie this sat&awaiting my call sign.Any info would be appreciated&Thanks..73s,Pete
Just bought one myself. I've been using an Icom 706 (original version) since 1995. What an improvement. I may have to get a second one. I'm using this as a base station. I would really like to be able to program it with a computer. Manual programming is a huge headache.
Hi i noticed the the antenna ends isolators were more or less right next to the fence which is wire in my opinion i would move them a few feet away atleast just a suggestion all the best David M3VZQ
Yeah, I've had a few people tell me this. I moved the antenna since this video was made. It is up in a tree and not near any other wire or metal. All of this is covered in my video 'Antenna Fixes'
Nice radio (I too have one) and set up. Regarding the antenna, what I would do (if you have the space), is tie another 10 or 20 feet of rope to each end, and spread it out a little more instead of having the insulator tied to that fence, and maybe even raise the apex a little more if possible. Just a suggestion that may improve things a wee bit for you.
Thanks for the comment. I quickly figured out that the antenna configuration was not too good. I moved the antenna up about two days after this video. The revised antenna configuration is covered in my video "Antenna Fixes." It works much better now that it is spread out and the radiation angle is better.
Wait until you start working some DX, the bug will really bite you hard then! Nice set up along with a nice radio, read up on the eHam reviews for that rig as there is a fellow who will modify your stock microphone for proper audio output.
Keep your ears peeled on 20 meters between about 2 and 7pm EST for DX and then when 20 goes dead switch down to 40/80 meters. When you aren't finding much on voice or CW then switch to RTTY and PSK31 for more fun!
hey listen around on 10m 28.4. the band has been opening and ive hit florida all the way up to nova scotia canada so listen for KJ4EOW. im located just 40 miles south of DC. nice to see other hams my age! 73
Hello KJ4BNF, Mark KD0DPK here I'm only a tech at the moment but if possible I would like to make contact with you. Are there any repeaters in range of you at college that have echolink on them and I could connect to one of them? Let me know and maybe we can work something out for QSO.
I looked around and couldn't find any Echolink linked repeaters. I have one very close to me that has IRLP, but I have no clue how to operate it. If I find out some more info I'll send you a message and we can try to set it up.
I agree, Our backyard doesn't have too many trees, but near the edge of the property where my antennas are its out of control. Unfortunately most of the trees are across the fence in the neighbors property. Maybe I could offer to do some "Yard work"
kj4bnf; What HF band, and freq do you monitor then most.I'm a mobile ham,and would like to make a contact with you.I hang on 7.255 alot.I lissen to a net there when i'm driving.I live in NJ..I like your videos.I have to make one myself one day on the hobby.
Tanks for the comment! I am usually am over the place. I don't particularly hang out on certain frequencies. I am in college so I can only use the rig when I am at home on the weekends. My mobile setup is only 2m/440. We could try to set up a contact if you would like.
Great video! I just got HF privileges too and have been looking at the IC-7000. Problem is I'm in an apartment and don't have room for a decent HF antenna. Can't wait to see your next video! 73 de VE1KSM
if you can, when you finish your antenna intallation you will probably want to get the ladder line as far form the metal work as you can also its worth waterproofing your coax connection to the ladder line with self emaglomating tape.
