Love this song. You should change your description of it though. It is a common story that it is about the two teens you mentioned; however, you fail to mention that the story is impossible since the accident took place in 1962 and the song was written in 1961.

Kudos for posting the back story for this song, but the Pearl Jam version of this song sucks....singer is off key (and off melody) so many times it is painful to listen to.....hated it in the '90s, and it still sucks in 2011. If you want to hear a good version of this song, look up the J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers version from the '60s.

If you are tone deaf and like to listen to off-key covers of classic songs, more power to you. For those of us that are NOT tone deaf, the J. Frank Wilson version is much better. Pearl Jam has good songs, but this cover was not one of them.
