@o56kid There is one instance when you should put back cut lower. If you are pushing or pulling a heavy leaner, you are less apt to pull or push tree off its own stump.
He is fortunate the tree fell where he intended: The backcut was about 6" too low. Notch and backcut done right that tree could have been felled at most requiring a sledge and wedge.
Pull?, you dont need to pull a rope with a tree like this one, it can be done with the chainsaw only. He made the cut way to high making it unsafe and heavy work for himself. A safety suit is also a good idea. One recoil of the saw and the man is cut in two parts.
