Which is 20 north of this, in our county we have point magu navel base (b 1 bombers, f-16's etc, ) 4 miles north of magu is port Heuneme (see bees: navel, also forth largest port on the western US, after San Fran, long beach, and San Diego). I have been out to Catalina many times. There is no base there but the navy is very active in this area off of the coast. I have seen nuclear submarines, navy destroyers and other ships anchored off of Avalon(city on Catalina). Maybe it was a submarine testing a missle. Seems reasonable.

@nick9823 I feel the same way. It looks like cheaper propellant to me because of the rate of plume expansion indicating lower density. The rule of thumb I've come to see is cheaper = offensive weaponry. On the flip side WIRED posed a similar contrail in the past that could have been mistaken for a missile but again in my opinion, it doesn't come close to this. Wish there were more videos.

@nick9823 Yes, when you see thick clouds falling behind the object that would be the strangest contrail ever seen. They usually are very wispy, light colored things that aren't changed much because there is less wind at 35,000 feet. When the trail gets spread around, you know the object was once at ground level.
