@ImIntoAnimals I sold this synth over 2 years ago. I only had it a few weeks, so I am not too familiar with its sounds. I did not do any programming. All the sounds in this video were already loaded into the synth. Not sure if they are factory sounds or not. I'm guessing they are not factory sounds.
@culturaleyes Yes, the Yamaha DX7 can produce any sound from the Korg DS-8 and much more. Korg purchased the licence rights from Yamaha to use FM synthesis in the DS-8 & 707 synths.
@zibbybone wow I didn't know that. I wonder why Yamaha would agree to license its patent to a competing company. thanks for that info. it restores hope that my DX7 can make cool sounds. the hard part is learning how : \
@zibbybone not entirely. the DS-8 uses 4-operator programming whereas the DX7 can do 6-operator FM and is much more flexible. so the DX7 can do "more" -- but what sets the DS-8 apart are the digital effects and a nicer-feeling keybed with aftertouch.
I used to have one of these and really liked it. I actually got it for free. I bought a Korg T1 for $450 and the guy threw this synth in with it for nothing. Best deal I ever made!
Could you tell me what sound your using for the first one? Does this keyboard have any monophonic sounds on it? I'm a little struggling here. I'm a bit new to synthesizers. Also could you tell me how to program monophonic sounds? I have the manual but I'm still a bit unsure.
@ImIntoAnimals No idea what patches are being played here. I regretfully sold this synth a little over a year ago. Also, I don't think these sounds are factory presets.
You need a MIDI interface to hook up any MIDI device to your computer. You can buy an inexpensive interface that uses USB. Check eBay, CraigsList, Sweetwater, Guitar Center, Musician's Friend or your local music store.
yeah, I bought one of them but when i connected it to my computer, only the usb signal light is lighting, but the midi in and out signal didn't light, do I have to change something in the settings of the keyboard ?
by the way, i want to connect it with fl studio ;)
Good old synth. I had the DS-8 as my first synth in the middle of the 80s as well as a POLY 800 and the good old DSS-1. I love this instrument and its sounds.
I know the synth engines are similar - see my comment from 2 weeks ago. Interesting that Kog would purchase the patent from Yamaha. Thanks for looking!
I know nothing about softsynths. The DS-8 is a 4 op FM synth, so I guess you'd need to find algorithms on FM8 that is similar to the one used on the DS-8.
The Kog DS-8 & 707 along with Yamanha DX11, DX21, DX27, DX100, FB01 & TX81z are all 4 operator synths whereas the DX1, DX5, DX7, DX7II, TX7, TX802 & TX816 are all 6 operator synths. Operators are basically ocillators in regular subtractive synths, but depending on what algorithm you use, some operators act as carriers (the sound you hear) and some act as modulators to shape the timbre. If you plan to program your own sounds, you might want to start with a 4op synth and then graduate to 6op.
Some parts from the Korg DS-8 synthesizer sound like music from a Sega Genesis.

Hi! I powered up my DS-8.. I think it is the factory preset "I60 - SynthLead1".
The nice glide with the pitch is the same.. as in this video..

I wonder if these sounds are possible on the Yamaha DX7

@Goth108
It's possible to get a nice Rhodes-like sound out of one of these with the right parameters.

is it a joke? why on earth the volume slider is all the way down? it should not make any sound!
johnrozzo 2 years ago
@johnrozzo There are two volume sliders, left and right or "a" and "b" ...see the one to the right? it's half way up.

Thanks for uploading this demo of the DS8.
Enjoyed it very much!

I bought one of these back in 1987 and still have it. I used this thing on so many student film soundtracks in the late 80's and early 90's

Found a used one 20 years ago and is to this day midi-uped in my studio. Find one of these and it works right, buy it!

Nice demo! The sound it makes reminds me of my old sega genesis game system. I wonder if it uses the same chip? The genesis was released in 1989.
crushnkill 2 years ago
I don't know much about game consoles, but the early Sound Blaster cards used 4op FM synth engines.
zibbybone 2 years ago
Sega Genesis used a Yamaha 4-op FM synth, same as DX21, DX100, etc...

The Sega game I'm reminded of is Golden Axe.
Anyway, tonight I opened a belated birthday present from my brother and found this! Can't wait to try it out.

Hey player what's up? Did you know that the synth engine is the same as the Yamaha FB01.
Keyboard magazine said in a1987 review that Korg purchased that patent so they could use it for the DS and Korg 707.
