Hi, You could always download the videos from youtube and put them on a cd for collection! Really good group! I play a synth myself so anything related i'm on the ball with them!
@24842185 Thanks I will! I wish I could buy the albums over here in my country :( But I love this song, and Tong Poo is so awesome as well, another of my favourites!
This is probably the closest thing to techno music in the 70s. While most Hi-NRG dance music at the time barely managed 130 BPM (beats per minute), YMO's "Technopolis" clocked in at nearly 145 BPM, just like the techno music of the late 80s. "Technopolis" was very ahead of its time.
@TheDrRudi That site was updated. You can find the link on my main youtube page (profile). I had a really bad host with the old site. My new host is uk based now and much better. Old one was in canada :/
*(btw... anyone happen to know of piano instruction videos that show the hands as they were shown in this vid? I find that very effective for my learning!)
Giant head sounds like saying "Tokio," which is another name for "Tokyo."
At least, that's what I thought when this song first came out...amazing 30 years ago!
The "invader game" was the first "TV" game I can remember, (note it was not even called "computer" game, cuz nobody had PCs back then,) oh, wait, was "pack-man" older??
There was a different cut of this video with a shot of the Bullet Train (Shinkansen)? It was a delightfully futuristic vision of Japan...from 30 years ago, it really "schools" our inner cities!
That's great! I was a boy tired of 70's longhairs with their guitars, I wanted something DIFFERENT, an electronic sound that appealed to what I had no name for, but which I now recognize is my cold, cold silicon heart. So I found Tomita, Vangelis, Jean-Michel Jarre, Gary Numan, Delerium. There are a few stand-out tunes like this too. Today's rave and trance "DJ's" should have this beaten into them with a stick until they learn something.
It is so addictive and inspiring that I keep watching this video again and again and again. I feel lots of enthusiasm and positive energy from YMO music. あなたのハードワークのためのYMOの感謝
If you're wondering why video games sounded like YMO, it's because YMO was a heavy influence on Japanese pop culture in the early 80's. Simply put, YMO came before the egg. :)
Holy crap, this is amazing! I am a big fan of Kraftwerk, and I found this by accident on Progarchives, and how happy I am! It sounds like really good video game/movie/etc. theme music.
music is a confusing a fascinating thing. I don't know what genre I should focus in. But I also want to pioneer something new like these guys. But where to go???
@LIGHTRONIX you don't have to focus on one "genre" just make what you like at the time. Blend genres. Find new sounds. Work with old (ancient) music styles and create your own stuff. You are, who you are. ^_^
please! introduce me to some good artist from Japan including some synthpop like this and other kind of electronic bands. I'll give you tons of hispanic music you'll enjoy for sure
It's a pointless distinction, as the members of YMO were all in their own music careers just as long as Kraftewerk was together. Also, both bands found their signature styles and sounds at the same time.
nah ymo's debut album came out in November '78. i should add that their second album including this song came out in september '79 and they started calling their own musical style techno in early '79. many people seemed to have a misunderstanding of ymo's history. but it's true that ymo was greatly influenced by kraftwerk. and now what year did detroit's people started calling their own musical style techno?
ah sorry, mixed up the dates there. i think ymo called their music "techno pop", not "techno" though, a term which kraftwerk later adopted on their electric cafe album. also, ymo was originally founded as a one-off studio project by haruomi hosono to mix exotica and electronics. even though the exotica thing has been downplayed on their later releases, it's still a thread that runs through their whole oeuvre. ;)
Yeah, and advice- DOWNLOAD SOON. One of my favorite videos (Soul Sonic Force "Looking for the Perfect Beat") got pulled a while back, and now I might never see it again. It could happen to anyone!
probably true. it seems that new techno bands are going for something people who have heard this just cannot follow. this is the pinnacle of electronic music, so no where to go but down i guess.

It went to Tsukuba University in the country of cherry blossoms village.
