As awesome as H&O are, the band was such a huge part. GE, T-Bone, Mickey Currey...and Charlie .I remember seeing them in 85 and was just as excited that I was getting to see GE Smith Live.
It amazes me to look back, and realize how radical G.E. Smith's playing is on these '80's Hall and Oates tracks. Inside that glossy synth pop is shrieking feedback. Sure, he's great with a Tele, a Tweed, and no effects, but G.E. had a more playful side earlier on, and I liked it when he was less a classicist .
@deeeecraig2 Is he in the video? I know who he is but this is fuzzy. Is that GE playing that AWESOME solo in Kiss On My List? If yes what effects is he using?
Even though I wasn'n alive for this band, I've grown up listening to this and other bands like them. Consequently, I can't stand the crap on the radio today. I'm so glad I was exposed to wonderful music like this.
Saw them in Austin "live in 85".....bought a flourenscent green tshirt with that logo on it from their concert. We were on the floor for that concert and it was AMAZING....wish they would go on tour here again!!!
@LookAtMyComputer H&O had a strong power pop strand - 'Wait for me' being another obvious one. Maybe not skinny tie/arch enough at the time, but surely due a reappraisal. It happened to Queen, after all. And they're not even that good.
@biffer43 Daryl and lead singer of the Goo Goo Dolls John Rzeznik do a great cover of this 80s classic on Daryl Halls' web show this month- the 42nd "webisode" of Live From Daryl's House. I think you'll real like it!! the audio mix, timing and Daryl's home studio band are first- rate, and John Rzeznik make this the best LFDH ever, with the Smokey Robinson one a close second. LFDH.com
@BozTheBass That is Mickey Curry on drums..........He & T-Bone had just joined the H&O band for the Private Eyes tour though Mickey played on 3 or so songs on the album. He did not play for Bryan Adams until 1987.
Hall & Oates Music's Most Charted Duo. I'm happy to be a Part of their Success. I use have their " Private Eyes " Album from where this song comes from
This hit ROCKED! I saw the H2O tour in June 1983. Sadly, they didn't include this song in their set list. They opened with Family Man. They should have opened with this, then go right into Family Man.
@mkl62 If it's possible for a band to be overflowing with hit songs, Hall and Oates were doing it in the early 80s. I saw the H20 tour that year as well, and G.E. Smith just took over as the focal point on those live shows, even on the H&O songs that preceded him, like "Kiss On My List." Smith gave them an edge that they needed in the face of New Wave, but at the same time, they could lay down an R&B groove like no one else could, as on "I Can't Go For That." Who does this today? Nobody.
Fantastic song by a truly great duo. Listening to the way this fizzes with energy and strong melody, is to be reminded of the essence of great rock and pop. The vocals and playing are tremendous, and sadly we will never see the likes of Hall and Oates again, unless we accept that most of the last twenty years of music has been poor and get back to promoting bands who can sing, write and play their own music. Wishful thinking i fear, but there's always hope.
@eightiessongs., aguitarpoet says so very true, no one could have said it better! Have you read "Killing The Music" by Don Henley? It was written several years ago but is still very insightful and a sad commentary on what has happened and the disparity between the generations, those who are listening now and those of us who actually went to the store to buy our music, those cherished times are gone and the appreciation for the artistry with them. Really love this song!
The BEST duo I have ever seen and heard!!! Along with T-Bone Wolk and Charlie DeChant, this group made music of the 80's worth listen too. Thank you Hall and Oates.
Hall and Oats were really a commercial success..catchy tunes..made alot of great music ..big talents..then poof! where are they now? how come artists like this just disappear? baffles me.
Biggest selling Rock duo of all time. This is a stellar performance and the SCTV guys are fantastic. What a great show! There's a part right before this where Bobby Bitman is describing his new film "Chariots of EGGS"! and Sammy Maudlin quips "Bobby...that sounds like Chariots of FIRE!" putting him on the spot. Bobby says "oh no, that's the movie about the cavemen or something..." ha ha!
Maybe the most underrated American music act of the last 30 years. There was a time in the 80s when you could go to a Hall and Oates concert that was 20 songs long and half of them were number 1 songs.
Underrated by whom? I remember when there was a time when people thought Hall & Oates would be bigger than Michael Jackson, who btw, admitted to stealing the bass line from No Can Do for Billie Jean.
