The fact is, you forgot to mention the MODERATES in that poll who make up about 40%. They balance that shit out and make the populace more progressive.

And as Morris Fiorina has shown, there is really no "culture war", per se, in America. It's only in politics and media, all in their heads. At the moment, the exchange rate is $1 for $1, so there are countries where the average person generally earns more than the average person in the US. In spite of having by far the highest taxes in the world (thanks to our liberal brotheren in the government) we are third in the world (we were first for many years, we need to stop paying for everything). Using % of GDP, the tax burden for an average US citizen is 28%. For me it is 30%. Canada 33%. UK 39%. Denmark 50%. Same with individual tax ranges. 0-35% for US. 0-50% in my country. For a rich western nation, the US tax rate is at the lower end. And, by my research, US tax rates went done slightly under "liberal" govt.

Corporations not only pay Fed. corporate tax of 35% to 41.6%, but also pay state tax, consumption tax, unemployment tax, excise tax, and many other specialized taxes which can add to the cost of a product as much as 75%. All of this contributes to the cost of products built here which is why we are losing manufacturing to other countries. Didn't even mention regulations..

@bdelphan Out taxes are a bit diffrent here which is very decieving and drives some of us that really understand the process nuts. Where as you pay a flat VAT, we pay a sales tax. The problem is that a single product may be taxed many times before you actually purchase it. The price of some products may have 20%-30% before you pay the tax for consumption. On top of that we have our wonderful sin taxes. I was recently in NYC where cigarettes are $16.00 a pack, $15 of which is tax.

If minimum wage is increased, labor becomes more expensive. In order for bosses to compensate for having to pay workers an increased wage, they might need to raise the cost of goods and services sold to the consumer, which can increase inflation.

I'm progressive, but skeptical... I never trust polls, for they only show a certain belief asked by a certain variety of people, and the data could be possibly skewed if the people polled were, for example, asked in more urban areas, as people in urban areas tend to be more progressive/liberal. But hey, if it's true I'm not complaining!

The American right is against taxation and we hear their arguments so why are they content to tax the middle class out of existence? At the moment, the exchange rate is $1 for $1, so there are countries where the average person generally earns more than the average person in the US. Using % of GDP, the tax burden for an average US citizen is 28%. For me it is 30%. Canada 33%. UK 39%. Denmark 50%. Same with individual tax ranges. 0-35% for US. 0-50% in my country. For a rich western nation, the US tax rate is at the lower end. And, by my research, US tax rates went done slightly under "liberal" govt.

Corporations not only pay Fed. corporate tax of 35% to 41.6%, but also pay state tax, consumption tax, unemployment tax, excise tax, and many other specialized taxes which can add to the cost of a product as much as 75%. All of this contributes to the cost of products built here which is why we are losing manufacturing to other countries. Didn't even mention regulations..

@bdelphan Out taxes are a bit diffrent here which is very decieving and drives some of us that really understand the process nuts. Where as you pay a flat VAT, we pay a sales tax. The problem is that a single product may be taxed many times before you actually purchase it. The price of some products may have 20%-30% before you pay the tax for consumption. On top of that we have our wonderful sin taxes. I was recently in NYC where cigarettes are $16.00 a pack, $15 of which is tax.

If "Liberal" has become a dirty word, then Liberals have only themselves to blame. There once was a time when it took its meaning from its root word... "liberty". But then within a couple of decades, Liberals went from protesting the suppression of free speech on college campuses, to being the most ferocious suppressors. P.C. is nothing less than the "thought police" that metes out punishment with socially destructive labels if one resists homogeneity.

If their views are the same as the old white guy who sat on the bench in the 40s or 50s, what have we accomplished? Just because you change the ethnic group of a person, you aren't making worthy history if their views or beliefs are the same. Venerable progress happened with the act of 1964, and the removal of the Berlin Wall. "Progressivism," includes programs like affirmative action, and a department of peace, and passing healthcare. It doesn't help a nation but ti sounds better than "liberal" to Americans.

I think that people generally don't want to change their country.
Change is scary for most people.
That is why the liberal/progressive view is not as common.
Theres a difference between thinking something is right and implementing it and I think it breaks down to the fact that America is a center left thinking people but a center right doing people.

You're definitely right about that. The thing is, in most urban areas, people are liberal. Even in most suburbs and mid-sized cities most people are pretty progressive and liberal.
The rural areas and the South are relatively conservative. But that's partly cuz they're dumb.

If minimum wage is increased, labor becomes more expensive. In order for bosses to compensate for having to pay workers an increased wage, they might need to raise the cost of goods and services sold to the consumer, which can increase inflation.

I'm progressive, but skeptical... I never trust polls, for they only show a certain belief asked by a certain variety of people, and the data could be possibly skewed if the people polled were, for example, asked in more urban areas, as people in urban areas tend to be more progressive/liberal. But hey, if it's true I'm not complaining!

The American right is against taxation and we hear their arguments so why are they content to tax the middle class out of existence? You realize the middle-class and rise of capitalism, then representation went hand in hand? The increase and availability of wealth allowed former serfs/peasants to break free of their lords and become their own man.

@TheUnitedStatists The Nazi party was fascist but used the term socialist and the color red on their flag as they were both popular at the time. Mussolini came up with fascism as an alternative to capitalism as well as communism, as he liked neither. The Nazi's came along in Germany and took it further branding fascism "National Socialism" opposed to Communism or Bolshevism. Proposed as an alternative it appeared more acceptable and brought on-board many skeptics and became socially acceptable.

According to Pew (Beyond Red vs Blue), Demographic Liberals have high rates of small business ownership and high rates of trading stocks and bonds. Liberals love capitalism to the extent it actually operates as meritocracy and allows for social mobility. Anyways, socialism and capitalism aren't inherently opposed. What socialists are against is wealthy capitalists oppressing and exploiting the working class.

progressinve is a word that can be spun in so many different ways. People who are not liberal can still be progressive, depending on what issue. So this whole discussion is kinda hollow. Im not siding with the right because i would never want to, but conservatives are the biggest group in the U.S. A gallup poll showed that 42% of americans are conservative, followed by 35% being independent(which is also hollow) and then 20% are liberal. so i depends on how the question is asked

However, an ideological label is different than public opinion on specific issues which is what Cenk is discussing in this video. Words such as progressive and liberal have specific meanings and are defined by specific positions in the context of US political history. What is confusing is prior to about a half century ago, liberal and conservative weren't equated w/ the 2 party system.
