When the Rolling Stones first began playing, in 1962, they weren't a rock 'n roll band so much as they were an R&B band and it stayed that way until 1964. In their R&B years they never sang any original music (that came in '64 too) but, instead, covered songs by artists that included Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley and the Rev. Solomon Burke. The very origin of their name came from a Muddy Waters' recording titled, "Rollin' Stone."
The very first time I heard this song it was the Blues Brothers cover; but I went to England and got a cd with this version and fell in love with it too.
The Beatles and Rolling Stones all became famous singing blues songs. Their rendition was nothing like this. Where has our talent gone? Jackie, Teddy, Solomon, Joe Tex, Luther, Wilson Picket, Garnett Mimms, Sam Cooke, Michael the list goes on. Just stood there and sang their hearts out. U all are truly missed.
One of my favorite songs of all time! Though I thank the Stones for helping me discover it, this original version is amazing! Thank you so much for uploading
Goddamn! Listen to that rhythm guitar! Who today does this? Answer: Few and far between which is pathetic. Too many Stevie Ray Vaughn Clones about who can't play rhythm to save their asses.
I remember when The Blues Brother sung this song; that is the first time I heard it; but when I came across this song in England around 1997, the other version was kicked to the serious curb. RIP Solomon Burke.
MUERE SALOMON BURKE!!! HABRÁ MUCHOS QUE NO LES SUENE ESTE NOMBRE, PERO SI ESTA CANCIÓN!!! AHORA COMPARTIRA UN PEDAZO DE CIELO CON RAY, OTIS Y OTROS CUANTOS DE LA ÉPOCA!!!
Solomon Burke, a soul music pioneer and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee whose songs blended soul, gospel, country and R&B, has died. He was 70. Burke died early Sunday He was scheduled to perform in Amsterdam on Tuesday. Burke's biggest hits include his first single, "Cry to Me," and "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love," 1964. recorded by the Rolling Stones, most famous for its use in The Blues Brothers, starring Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi. Dirty Dancing also popularized "Cry to Me,"
Solomon's version of this great song crushes The Rolling Stones' version into wimpy, white-boy soul singer wannabe mush. With all due respect to the early Stones.
@blueinfinite Do you know, there was a famous Soviet actor - Andrei Mironov - who died on stage, during a performance (from a hear attack, he was 41). And he was scheduled for another play the next day. The box offices were staffing up to deal with all the refunds, but not a single person came to return the ticket.
