  • Love the way the bowl looks inside. Very nice work.

  • 2 weeks ago, as french language class, we attended a pottery class in the same building in Geneva, it was so relaxing, making feel relax.

  • Very impressive... I wish i'm as skillful as you are... :) thanks for sharing this video.

  • Is pottery made with potty?

  • Very skillful. Love the attention to detail.

  • you could'nt afford college, you took a night class

you made a clay dildo, and shoved it up your ass

  • Pure magic!

  • @Redpo0p yeah because he is harry... harry potter that is!

  • that splash pan looks super scary.... otherwise, nice video :)

  • key point: slow steady and strong hands

  • Check out my few throwing vids!!! and check out my work on facebook >> BLUE EARTH POTTERY

  • This is a classic for me :) !!! Thanks for sharing it!

  • Thank you so much!!

  • Very nice!! this has helped me improve, i started this winter Check out my work on on facebook if you have time i have alot of my pots on there search Blue Earth Pottery, thanks

  • he makes pottery look so easy

  • This was one of the 1st videos I watched 3 years ago...very inspiring and thank you so much!!

  • Very nice demonstration of how a bowl should be turned!

  • I love how you waited til the end to explain what you had done instead of talking through the whole video. It actually made the making beautiful with the music background and relaxed the mind enough to pick up what you were doing. Thank you.

  • thanks for putting the video to music instead of a bunch of yammering on! just started throwing and what helps the most is watching- not listening! thanks again!

  • well done.

  • Pure talent! That is just awesome.Creating something eternal.Ceramic is also used in space shuttles. Those things provided by nature will always be the most valuable.

  • nice job wedging it.

  • @bakupossy haha i noticed that too! i always have horrible bubbles when i try and do it myself so i always make my boyfriend do it for me.

  • oh hey i just realized, thats sigur ros!

  • okay, that took WAY to long...

  • Lovely work thanks

  • I was wondering, does anyone --when wedging-- fold over the clay? Like you wedge one way, then stop and wedge a different way, thereby folding it?

  • thank you very much indeed for taking the trouble to do this demonstration to video. I enjoyed it very much.

  • That was really amazing, I am just starting to throw pottery, and its very hard.

It almost seems like the clay isnt soft enough, of that the wheel is spinning too slowly? Like when you pull the walls, you do it only two smooth motions, and I dont see how thats possible without folding and warping the clay, am I missing something?

any pointers you could give me will be greatly appreciated :]

  • @bellaluna423

    Thought I'd reply, since he hasn't! :'D

The wheel is spinning fine, and actually, the clay looks prettttttttttty soft. You also seemed to have mistaken something; warping can only be done [[okay, several ways]] if you put too much power/pressure in one spot, or be to fast with you hands. Going slow = smooth . Going fast = warped and/or broken/injured pottery.

When doing pottery, my instructor said that it isn't a good idea to do more than 3 lifts, because it could be pretty thin.

  • check out this vid and see what young talent is making!

    /watch?v=fm2cv19RhAg

    sweet vid!

  • how can i make a pottery wheel or where can buy it ?thanks amazing video

  • what clay is that where can i buy it ?

  • ok the music i noticed like right away!!! great choice Sigur Ros is amazing. and i LOVED this demo!!! i want to try this!

  • Hi! I am about to do a project on pottery, but I don't really know what to put in poster. Can anyone help by telling me the main key things to put like...where clay mostly come from, the process of making a pots, vases, etc ? Thanks a lot

By the way, this movie is really cool and very helpful. Thanks

  • is it pathetic that when I'm not throwing I watch videos of other people throwing because I wish I was?

  • @MUSlCFAVORITES2 Nope.

  • woah i like ur shirt! twins! muay thai!

  • I think the video is good, the bowl has a nice shape and I really like the way you did the rim, thanks

  • I have just started doing this.. I am doing a bachelor of visual arts at uni with a major in ceramics :D I haven't had much experience but so far I really am enjoying it and find it very interesting!

  • Amazing. You deserve a better studio.

  • well done.....

  • i just started ceramics II in high school... first year i didnt really get that into it but lately i get really excited about it....

    this is nice clay..

    im sick of raku...

  • I miss doing pottery. I did it for 4 years from the beggining to the end of highschool. It got to the point I would bribe my teachers with hagi porcelain vases, and use indents and put marbles on the second firing instead of glaze:3 I would skip the class and go make pottery instead, or get a better grade. I need to get myself a wheel and a electric kiln...I don't feel safe around gas kilns...I don't know why:P I'm a BIG procrastinator to, but pottery, I always finish.

  • Without voice instructions it is impossible to duplicate the process shown. There are a number of subtle movements, pressure and hand locations required to do what is shown, and a novice cannot possibly determine what they are by looking. Nice music though.

  • eh... Only I would notice, but look at all those crotch shots!

    XD

  • super peaceful!! i have a couple throwing video's too and i was wondering if you could give me any pointers? thanks :)

  • this is so calming to watch

  • I loved watching this - it's amazing!! You are a true pro! <3

  • i wish i could center like that. i just threw for the first time last wednesday and my clay kept getting all over my hands and way off center.

  • awesome!! can u teach me one day?? hai.

  • I love my pottery class. Great video.

  • BEAUTIFUL, Thank you for sharing and helping those of us who are just beginning.

  • I can't believe how easy a pro makes it look...You centered and coned it so smoothly...You just must be super strong..

    The music is haunting...very nice...

I learn so much by watching someone that is so good at what they do. Thanks

  • My mom and I are going pottery making today, And I don't know much about it so this helped alot! Thanks : )

  • The Video is AWESOME and so the music that plays, anyone know the name of the music???

Man wish i know how to work with pottery it looks like so cool and something that relax us.

Thanks if anyone say to me the name of the Music =D.

  • I think this might be the band "Sigur Ros" from Iceland. Not certain but if you like this you'd probably like Sigur Ros.

  • wow, that was incredible, it was overall a great video, the music was pleasant and the pottery amazing. I'm taking a pottery class at the moment and its a LOT harder then it looks

  • AWESOME. All I can say.

  • That was great...thanks! Now you got me thinking to try this.

  • i got a pottery wheel for my birthday its not as easy as it looks

  • lucky. I wish I had one. :(

  • lovely music

  • Thanks knottyboy, very cool! Have a nice day ~ Karen

  • thats a lot harder than it looks

  • Im taking a pottery class! :) great job, better than anything i've done. i like to see everyones way of throwing pots, its cool how it varies from person to person :)

  • That is so awesome... I wanna learn how to do all kinds of art work. :D This looks very fun to do.

  • I just started a pottery class, can anyone tell me how to avoid, or minimize the amount of scraping on your hands.. The skin on my right hand is chewed right off..

  • Im have this class 1st period. :D

  • I really enjoyed this video. It's nice how you show the whole process; from the wedging to the final product. Thanks!

  • By the way, if you wet the bat, the clay will be thrown off. The bat must be dry.

  • i had so much fun doing this in high school

    i miss it

  • Thank you for posting this.

    It's a beautiful video,

    very clear and instructive.

    Excellent camera work.

The explanation AFTER the process is a very effective touch.

5 stars and my hat off to you.

  • You make it look a lot easier than it actually is! I just started pottery throwing today, and had a hard time raising it to a cylinder. I guess I have to practice. ;)

  • bloody harder than it looks :/

all my bloody bowls end up all squwify hahah

  • I wish i did more pottery while i had the chance

  • I wish i did more pottery while i had the chance

  • such a beautiful process. i love pottery.

  • you are not really meant to wet the board because the clay doesn't stick to the board as well, but its your choice, you also need to imagine the pot is bigger then it is when you are pulling up otherwise you end up with a bad rim.

  • I wet my bats so my piece doesn't dry on the bottom and fly off. I find my clay sticks fine.

  • you must have some shitty bats then

  • Really? Because my pottery turns out beautifully. I guess that is what happens when you are talented though, and not a retard.

  • Actually, you must wet the bad. that creates a suction to the clay. otherwise the clay will not stick or stay centered.

  • My bats are home-made from 3/4 particle board. These were scraps from a cabinet shop. The most important thing about using bats is to make a wire cut soon after throwing within 1 hour. Then cut again a few times as the pieces set up. This along with compressing the bottom during throwing will prevent the dreaded bottom cracks as they dry. Tony

  • hey dude, i have a question, what temperature it has to be for the pottery cooks ? and after that how much heat it can tolerate ?

sorry for my English, if you can send me a private message. cheers

  • sweet i wish i could really do dat , my moms making me take pottery lessons so i could learn pottery but really i dont want to cuz im 2 lazy !!!!!!

  • No, I'm just a fellow learner! If you are open to advice: a good way to learn as you watch these videos is to observe the body positions and movements. Try to watch the person's hands more than you watch the clay. And then also, watch the whole body, not just the hands. You can even imitate the movements as you watch. Then practice what you saw with clay, and find out what works for you. Also, relaxed concentration, or "intention" is important.

    Happy Throwing!

  • It could be that you need softer clay, but if issue seems your physical strength, check to see if you're bracing your elbow against your leg. You can put your elbow on the inside of your knee or thigh, and use that to anchor your arm. Your arm doesn't have to stay still on its own strength. You can even push just a little with your leg.

  • Great job! Beautiful bowl. Thanks, also, for the explanation at the end.

  • i just started today at school its so hard lol

  • That looks like good fun, I have used metal and wood lathes for years but never got a Chance to throw clay..

  • Does the fact that the wheel seems to be wobbling a little bit offset the centering of the finished product?

  • yea, dude you use whatever water amount fits you....me and you throw pretty similarly...im obviosly not as experienced though

  • The use of water is a trait that is honed from years of experience and personal choice. It's nothing to criticize since the finished product is what's important.

    kb

  • @knottyboy That's right u need water

  • Knotty,

Great job man! Ya even showed how to wedge. Keep 'em coming.

  • wow i wish i was that good

    u centered that really quick

  • rrriiiiiiiiggghhhtttt!!!!

  • i dont know anything about pottery exept that needs some MAD SKILLS. good job 5/5

  • get some glaze and a proper oven and im never making dinnerware again

  • I believe its a Kilm, the oven that you speak of!!

  • I'm a handbuilder and sculptor hoping to try some throwing soon. I have a feeling after watching a pro like you I will be sorely disappointed ;). You make it look effortless and I fear I may have some craptacular pots in my life for many years before I ever get to where you are! Thanks for sharing.

  • very good, for anyone who doesnt know

first he wedges out the clay to get rid of any air bubbles then centers it and begins to widened it and checks the bottom because it needs to be atleast a quarter of an inch. He then lifts and collars the sides into the desired shape.

I wish I was half as good as you lol, I suck

  • I enjoyed your throwing video..! I was wondering Why you didn't use a small Elephant Ear Sponge while working on the throwing of your bowl. I was a five year student of Pottery at the University. Made a 4 point in 7,000 pottery. I guess since I always use a small sponge to throw with it...it stood out how you don't. Good job tho.

  • wow that really is good pot making !!!!! i cant do that very good. !!!! respect the potmen .. holdtight the pot crew !!!ruff enuff the handy boys !!!!

  • Skillful and sensitive throwing. Thanks.

  • im in a ceramics class now, and its tricky at first, but with a bit of practice and paitence, you will be a pro in no time :D

  • Wedging is an art, and Tony took a lot of time teaching me how to do it properly so he wouldn't have to redo the clay I wedged. All art is a learned and honed skill. Very few people have an innate ability to create, so keep practicing.

    Cheers,

  • Really nice, I wouldhave liked a narrative to go with it.

  • Around 3:45 he flips us the bird!! Very cool video though!

  • probably a problem with your ISP. Dump your browser cache and reload the page and try watching again.

    Cheers,

  • Excellent video and great choice of music. Sigur Ros is in the CD changer in our studio as is a lot of ambient stuff [Brain Eno, Fripp, David Byrne...].

  • knottyboy i am 13 years old and took a clay class over the summer and im really into it but i have no experiance and nobody i know does. can u give me any help on where to get a cheap but decent quality wheel, kiln, and just some basics?

  • Ask at the place where you took lessons if it's local to you. Many ceramics/pottery shops will rent time on their wheel[s] and will fire your works for a fee. Here, in upstate NY, the going rate for wheel time is $10 per hour. Good luck.

  • Glad that you got something enjoyable and useful out of it.

    Cheers,

    Blue Fox Gallery

  • Wonderful! - I'm hoping to show this to my Sunday School class this weekend.

  • How lovely! I'm taking a high school ceramics course this semester...we don't have very many pottery wheels so we aren't doing much throwing...but hopefully i'll get a few chances to try my hand at it. Wonderful to watch!

  • hehe, compared to the japanese master, this american master is moving in slow motion. too long to make 1 bowl.

  • Thank you for your observations. And yet after 14 years of business I think we'll continue to take it slow. Seems to be working quite well.

    Blue Fox Gallery

  • hm go to japan and view the prices for a simple sake cup... 200-500 per piece... dollars my friend. there is a different level of appreciation. teabowls sell for 1000 to $5000 clams... hmm.

  • thanks. i will post a video of my throwing later... also my teacher from korea... it will kick some butt. actually fun to share and learn ! hehe ! thanks !

  • ummm this isn't a teabowl that he is making. More clay more time.

  • ur rushing your drying most likely how dry are you throwing? if you rush, cracks will usually appear inside on the bottom.

  • bottom cracks are generally the product of water left in the bottom, bottom not being compressed while throwing or a combination of drying and the piece not cut away from the bat. In factories where these processes are controlled the wares are dried in hours in large heated rooms. No problems with cracking when things are done controlled and correctly.

  • What's that song?

    Any response appreciated,

  • that was near sexual

  • regarding the ASDA comment, the above pot was hand thrown. There is industrially casted ceramics made for mass markets, using moulds and runny clay (called slip), known as slip-casting. Much cheaper and quicker, hence the lower cost. To purchase a bowl like the one made above is undoubtedly much more expensive because you are paying for an individual piece. Hope this clarifies.

Brill video, love watching it. Very skilled craftsman.

  • Excellent video, thanks!

  • i bet if people call him he says i'm pottering about!! its seems unreal that asda charge just £4 for a whole set of theese now i have seen the work that goes into it and that came with cups and saucers as well.

  • wow thanks very much

  • how long does it take to dry? and once its dried is that it? or you but it in those heating things, i am curious to know... much thanks

  • Drying depends on the climate and the piece. if the piece can take it then just a couple of days to dry. In a factory it would be forced dried and ready in a day. Also there is some drying in the bisque kiln but a wet piece is never put into a kiln.

  • stumboled upon this video randomly, one of sigur ros best songs...awesome pottery throwing also

  • You must use really soft clay, cause when I do it, It acctually hurt my fingers to make them.

    Got to love art class!

  • Wonderful video; the music is serene and beautiful, and it perfect represents the peacefullness of working with clay. I don't take potter's wheel this year (I do hand-building this year), but I hopefully will next year.

  • Is the clay hard on your hands?

  • I dont know much about working with clay yet, but it's easy to tell this man is a pro. Thanks for sharing a bit of your skill with people like me. soA calling.

  • sheesh you make it look so gosh darn easy! and hey! hardly any splashing and mess, I look like ive been wallowing in mud when I throw! ( but hey, ive only just started leaning!) :)

  • i miss pottery! you've made me yearn to get back into the studio

  • Hey! You actually put your left index finger over the lip of your pot when you pull-up! I though I was the only one who did that - Now I don't feel like such a freak ;-)
