I just finished reading Bertrand Russell's "History of Western Philosophy" and this really helped elucidate his final chapter on Logical Analysis.

Did I say that philosophers discovered the atom? uh... no. They conceptualized the idea that everything (matter) is made up of tiny fundamental parts, then physicists then later responded to this idea because it was extremely relevant. No, science does not need philosophy, but its ideas can greatly enhance the direction in which it moves.

Your a fool, Philosophy was responsible for the initial idea of the Atom, not physics. Without philosophy, we may never have understood the atom existed. Rational minds don't dream? Your correct... However, the best rational minds do dream and Philosophy pushes Science forward in finding the answers to the most complex questions.
