  • Nice modeling work and redesign of the Viper Mark II. Looks like a combination of the original Viper and the Viper Mark VII. I like it!!! Since you are a big Viper fan check out my drawing demo of the Viper Mark II. I hope you like it!

    Gordon

  • Some of the bigger models (EG the Galactica) look a little odd and could really use some textures. The starfighters, on the other hand, look and animate beautifully, but it's odd why there are no lasers when they shoot the cylons. The camerawork is pretty damn nice, but I really think you need a moving background. Nothing special, just a bunch of stars will do.

Still, Zo's a great animator. I like old school BSG, too, and am interested in what you're making.

  • I really like your music pick. What is that from?

  • Cool man.

Hey, did you ever notice Egyptian decor (the horizontal blue & gold stripes) that's similar to the a Pharos headdress design on the fighter pilot headgear?

    R!

  • I really like your conceptual take on everything. You have a great eye. I recognized everything from the old BSG and BR. Music is a great compliment piece as well. Keep up the work!!!

  • Well done man, very creative - looks great

  • Nice video, Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rodgers combination :D

  • for being a rough draft i think its really good. and a hell of a lot better than i could ever do.. LOL

  • Nice rendering of the viper, like the much larger engine section and increased wing surface.

I'm sure the colonial forces would have easily intergrated with 25th century earth (Buck Rodgers) but do you really think the Cylons would have made an ally with the Draconian forces? the scale seems a bit off between the Cylon Raider and the Drac fighter, the Raider should be much larger due to it's three centurian crew. all in all a nice job!

  • @telesis66 Have to agree with this. The Draconians would not ally with the Cylons. However I DO feel that it would take Earth and Galactica to beat the Cylons once and for all.

  • I like the other fighters especially the Colonial one with dual thrusters. The Cylon raidersand the red one were also impressive.

  • Those are actually ships from the TV series "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century", contemporaneous to Galactica, that's why ship design blends almost perfectly.

  • For learning After Effects, there are great tutorials on Youtube to watch. Myself, I use 3ds Max for animation. One idea, keep a low poly count, simple textures, and you will be able to render faster and do more. You can then turn it into a cartoon effect in AFX . For a one person production, if you get to high detailed, your project won't get done. What you have modeled so far is perfect. And carry around story board books/script books everywhere..car, bed, table, and keep writing.

  • It looks great so far! My humble advice would be, after you are comfortable with modeling, if you want realism, focus on learning about materials, textures, and lighting. Also, motion. For example, in this, where you have ships flying in formation. When they do a certain movement, like a turn, every now and then trying making their movements just slightly different. That implies different pilots. Looks great, keep it up!

  • Big sci-fi fan here as well. Loved Firefly, BSG (old and new), Andromeda & Farscape.

  • Beats the heck out of anything I could do. Keep on working on it, looks great so far.

  • Hey Zo are you a big sci fi fan? I don't see many conservatives that are. I love Sci-Fi and fantasy, and so do my friends. But they're all very liberal. We get along great, just as long as we don't talk politics lol

  • buck rogers>BSG

  • Looks Great! 5*

  • The basestar designs truly are awesome.

  • You're definitely on the right track. Nice work!

  • It's very fitting. Love the cello.

  • This sounds like the music from the show!

  • Nice work from a fellow sci-fi dork. Bring Back FARSCAPE!

  • What the frak Zo, nice work. And thats no feldercarb. I want a Colonial Viper!!!

  • reminds me of lylat wings or the game on super nintendo with fox mccloud....

  • Dude...mucho nice job! Some very interesting redesigns on the Viper and the Galactica and Basestar. Nice mix of Buck Rogers and Galactica. And yeah, the Buck Rogers Earth Fighters were originally intended to be the Vipers for Galactica. Very well done! Looks like you're coming along just fine. Much, much better than I can do with what I have right now!

  • Hmm... Zo needs to check out Stargate.

Great job, btw. Wish I was half this good.

  • Buckrogers fighters?

  • I wish I was a computer nerd, so I could do half as well as you did on this video! Kudos!

  • Great work. Your Viper MK2 has a nicer, sharper look than any of the ones in the old or new series. You've improved upon the design!! Well done.

I recognize the cylon raider, but what about the other 2 fighters? Are they from the show, or did you make them up yourself?

  • Mucho Thank yous! The fighter flying with the vipers were the initial models for BattleStar Galactica, but ended up being used in Glen Larson's version of Buck Rogers as the Star Fighter. The Fighters flying with the raiders were also in Buck Rogers as Draconian Marauders AKA Hatchet Fighters. Thanks for watching! Cheers!

  • They are from Buck Rogers

  • this was awesomely done!, GREAT work:D

  • if i were you, id use the word 'mastering' rather than 'learning'

  • This is REALLY good.

  • thats tight!

  • It's better than what I could do.

It's your choice whether or not to take that as a compliment or not...

And I believe the proper term is Sci-fi GEEK.

    ...

  • Hey Zo, my cousin Toni Graphia was Executive Producer of the original BSG. Look her up on IMDB. Peace.

  • Great stuff!

love the ships from Buck Rodgers.

Great old school Sci-Fi with a updated edge!

  • lookin good M8

  • Looks Good So Far!

    Good Luck & Have Fun!

Battle Star Gallactica, Was a Cool Show!

  • Hey Alphonso, Just found out that you met Lloyd Marcus.. great guy from my neck of the woods. Just letting you know I like your animation. Ever try Combustion? I've use Combustion, Poser, Maya, Carrara. All great programs. I'd love to collaborate with you some time. Sci-fi and 3d Design is awesome, praise God!

  • wow very nice

  • I think the kind of program you are looking for to make 3d, aftereffects and animation look realistic is only handed out by professionals. BUT, I heard that you could try to call on the nearest animation complex near you, preferred professional though, to call and ask them if they have any available software that they are getting rid of because most complex's and institutes would throw them away to move on with the next generation model. Just gave you a good tip and hope it helps ALOT =D

  • There's no secret device to making realistic scenes anymore everything is available over the counter and will run on a decent spec'd PC/MAC.

The only thing that demands a lot of hardware is really high quality rendering (bluray type stuff) but even that can be done on a typical PC it'll just take ages.

  • nice

  • I love the music.

  • looks pretty awesome great work.

  • If these are your models = Awesome! I would now concentrate on textures. Even bear metal has imperfections. Focus on the specularity. I would add more contrast by adding a few more lights. Try lighting one model and go from there. Add colored lights. Most lights are off white. Even an orange (32000K) and a touch of blue (say 50000K) would add more realism.

Hope that's what you were looking for. Great job though!

    (love the bus video)

  • Wow.

I grew up on both battle Scar Galactica and Buck Rodgers in the 25th Century when they were broadcasted as first runs on network TV!

    1970's Sci Fi's. Yeah! :-)

  • yo macho! have you ever tried starcraft!? i bet you would like it!

  • Pretty awesome modeling job. All I can see now is you need to do some reading on lighting and shaders and you'll be set.

  • Oh, also, I don't know what software you're using, but you need to add stars, and then give your spaceships a slight reflective-ness so that they look metallic. Also, it's important to remember that starlight is not soft at all, so areas that are not exposed to it would be totally black.

  • That is really good. If you could just get some sond effects, it'd be ballin'.

  • Glen Larson produced the original Battlestar Galactica as well as Buck Rogers in the 25th century. They actually used some BSG models in some Buck Rogers episodes.

  • I could've sworn that other good guy space craft was out of 'Buck Rogers'!

  • There were both Star Fighter & Draconian Marauder in his sequence. Now, I know we're talking Ol" SKOOL :-)

Alfonzo: Looks like you are off to a good start :)

  • wow thats badass.

  • Very nice work :D

  • Looks like you've a mix of ol' skool Batlestar and Buck Rodgers craft.

    Sci-fi geek here too!

  • 1:00 to 1:03 was beautiful. Keep at it.

BTW, a lot of us like dorks. I married one. :D

  • Was into 3d myself so years back (pre-2k)... I'm sure the tools (and processing times!) have gotten much better... Main thing is to pick an art type and stick with it... the beginning had a very "Cell Shaded" look to it, while some later model/shading seemed different... Good Luck! You picked a hard setting as space can be a challenge in showing speed/depth and pulling off intense moments

  • LOL Alfonzo, you must be a much bigger nerd than you let on. :D

  • Looks pretty good. I would play around with the lighting a bit more. It seems that you are using the default lighting. I don't know which program your using, but if you are using Maya or 3dsMax than learning mentalray is a good idea. It takes a bit longer to render, but it pays off.

  • Which program did you do the 3d in? The modeling was excellent but the textures were a little flat, and everything was unreflective, like it was made of plastic. My biggest suggestion is a bit more motion blur, spend more time rendering in passes to get better quality, and use some more reflective matierals.

  • Dude that was tight! Keep up the good work!

  • Simply cool movie. Good job. I wish I knew how to do that, but we gotta focus on God because humans won't live to the space age where we have battleships in space, in my opinion.

  • Wow every day you find something new about ZO to make you love him even more. :)

    Love the Buck Rogers too.

  • Very nice! Do keep in mind that space is a vacuum so there's no big flaming fireball when something explodes

  • Oh my goodness! You produce amazing political vids, but this is also wonderful. I can't give an informed opinion except as a consumer - it was very entertaining. The music is very interesting - somewhat melancholy, but beautiful. Thanks for the great variety!

  • This is really quite good - beginner or no. And the music is awesome.

If you do ever end up making a full-length feature including battle in space, would you be so good as to remember that there's no wind resistance in a vacuum - when a ship blows up, shrapnel will blow out and continue infinitely in a direction until it runs into something. Just an idea.

  • Is the music yours? and Have I mentioned that you are incredibly talented and a genius?

    Yeah, I have! :)

  • cool

  • Can't wait to see the finished product.

  • That must have taken a fucking LONG time to render...

  • Man of many talents, Dude. WTG! :D

  • Buck Rogers and BSG?

  • Wow! Something totally different from you. Very cool! Unfortunately, I know far less about 3D stuffs than you do, so I can't give a lot of input. I do hope you keep posting WIPs, though. This was really cool and I wouldn't mind seeing more of it.

    ~D~

  • You can tell you are still learning. But for a beginner it is pretty good. When you get the shading and lighting down. Along with more background worked out. The BSG fans will love it.

  • Oh my hell...very impressive Zo...But PLEASE go back to doing what you are gifted at! Come back to us!

  • The blank black space is more than a little disconcerting.

I'm not a 3-D person so that's about all I can come up with. Otherwise, coolness!

  • dang zo thats not bad, great music too

  • Great music, gerat ships, great animation, great overall effect!

  • what music is that in the background?

  • Cool. Looks like you have the basic foundations down with the 3D ships. Paste in a background from a Hubble picture. I would throw myself into all of the aspects of lighting. Stars, nebula, planets, ships, and shadowing. Don't stop. :-)

  • Who did the song playing on this vid for background? It's got some nice feel to it.

3d isn't my thing, looks great to me since I love bsg :P (I'm a music guy hence my question) But... is there a way to give the camera and ship movement a more realistic feel? again, I don't do anything with 3d or animation, just curious. ike

  • my only complaint is that it is not in 16:9 aspect ratio, which is what everything is shifting toward now(including youtube). i know your normal videos aren't 16:9, so i wouldn't necessarily expect it, but it would be nice.

i know i know, this is a really picky suggestion, but I think 16:9 is way better looking than 4:3. great animation though!

  • As you may already know, greatness comes not from equipment, but from the man behind it.

And I'm pretty sure you are in the process of making animation your bitch.

  • Impressive work for a one man show. You should get around to After Effects in no time.

  • Great video.

All constructive criticism I could come up with has been covered in previous posts. So I'll just add another good job, keep striving, and may God bless you and your family.

  • Awesome indeed! As others have noted, putting skins/textures on everything will seal the deal. To me though, it seems you can get more realistic by slowing down the speed a bit when the little fighters are passing by the base stars/Galactica/bigger ships. They look good going by, but it seems slightly fast so you lose the sense of size of the big ships. With that said, looks like you have a very promising career ahead of you.

  • Great to see the Buck Rogers Draconian hatchet fighters and Defense Directorate starfighters in there with the BSG ships. The most realistic-appearing model is the hatchet fighter because of the lines and shadow inherent in the design which break up the smooth surfaces. If you study the production miniatures of the other ships you will notice a lot of fine scribed lines and raised surfaces that were used to give the ships some scale and most importantly to create shadows. Great work so far!

  • Nice work! I always liked the Vipers. Great animation!

  • texturing and ....yeah thats it. its amazing. Good work good music choice. I sugest you play Final Fantasy 10 and 8 to see ship texturing and graphic placement. :-)

  • Well you hit a nerve Zo.

I have seen people linking to this video on movie prop and model forums.

I think people want classic BSG back!

  • Nice job and I like the music

  • Let me give you a little constructive criticism. Just a few things I see that need work. First and foremost, your ships really need some more texturing. They're too clean, and reall don't have "panel lines" that I can see. Also, reduce the ambient lighting a bit. It's way too bright to be in outer space, and too evenly lit. Low ambient light, and one or two light sources. And as someone else said, add a backround. Some stars or a nebula or something really helps add to it.

  • do you do this frame by frame?

  • It's done my key framing, and then, I batch render. Hope I understood your question!

    ;)

  • All this needs is a back ground and a few textures, put the music in the back ground and add com chatter.

  • I would really like to know your thoughts on gay marriage. If it was expressed in a previous video I apologize.

  • pretty good!!!!

    I'm imprested

  • I LOVE IT - A Buck Galactica crossover.

    Good job on the animation.

  • Well done.

  • Good Animation but couldn't you have named one of the Ships U.S.S. Fuck Liberals ?

  • Wonderful animation!

You may want to stop by the Replica Prop Forum (RPF) They may be able to help you with the smaller details on the ships.

  • nice. I know it's BSG, but it reminds me of the BBC micro game, 'elite' too!

    nicely done

  • Nice work! Great videos

  • Have you seen any of the new BSG? Even if you don't like the show, you should check out how they did the ships. There's a newer Viper that looks pretty good and the Raptor. And of course, the Cylon Raider and Heavy Raider.

  • I had no idea the ships from Buck Rogers were considered for BSG. Man, those Vipers had my young imagination going as much or more than the ships in Star Wars. Maybe because BSG came on every week! LOL, no VCR then. Man, love everything you do, especially your common sense politics. If only more people had that gift. You are the only channel I subscribe to here, please don't stop doing what you are doing.

  • If offered one of the two, which would you take, the Viper or the X-Wing? It's hard for me to answer.

  • I'm partial to the Viper myself!

  • I'm a BSG fan as well. Great for a beginner! You did mix some ships from Buck Rogers in with the BSG ships, but I guess that's ok. LOL. Keep it up.

  • Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I took the liberty since the Star / Thunder was the initial model for Battlestar Galctica, but they of course came up with the Viper design!

  • If you really did all the graphics; congratulations brother! Fantastic job! I love your videos also. Sometimes though you go too fast for an old white guy. I love your stuff keep it up. Best of luck!

  • Righto My friend! Thanks!

  • April 11th '09 TEA PARTY this SATURDAY in Pittsburgh at 12 NOON: ALAN KEYES-keynote speaker.

Allegheny Landing (on the north bank of the Allegheny River, flanked by the 6th St. and 8th St. Bridges).

Watch out for ACORN mischief at the various Tea Parties!! Bring your cameras!

Great Animation & Music Track, Zo! You & new technology are helping to "democratize" the Film Industry for ALL people (not just Liberals).

  • Mucho thank yous! Make some noize out there!

  • great job man. that looks bad ass. i love bsg.

  • Reading the opening made me think I was going to see a hokey video... BUT THAT WAS AWESOME! Keep it up man! RAWKS!

  • Wow. Gorgeous visuals. The music is really what makes it all come together though. Great job, zo.

  • zo, this rules! especially love the music. keep the hard work up. your the best.

  • Nice stuff, dude! If you want more realism, you gotta depict it. These ships are likely not as pristine as you show them. They have scorch marks by their weapons apertures, maybe patched plating, rust marks, etc. Keep up the good work!

    :)

  • Defininetly! I hust gotta figure out how to do it! LOL!

  • Rust? There's no oxygen in space.

  • No, but there certainly is aboard the Galactica, my eager-to-put-his-two-cents-in friend.

    :)

  • maybe now we can have the first conservative movie ever made...

  • I'm workin' on it my friend!

  • Love the old school BG, and if this video is any indicator, you're off to an AWESOME start in 3D modeling!

  • Thank you!!!

  • Awesome work. I'd say your learning alot about 3D modeling. My son wants to get a degree in Arts and Technology to do this kind of thing and to do game design. Any tips?

On another note, I think BSG (SciFi) was the best show ever made. It even blew out Stargate and Star Trek (the Original) for me. Why, the amazing character development and the illumination of what I perceived to beBiblical issues of existence and the search to discover, "Why are we here?".

  • Sho' nuff!

  • WOW nice work, how many hours did that take?

I was sad to see the BSG end, probably the TV best show ever.

  • Wow. Not was I was expected. Good job. I'm only an audio guy. No complaints here. Music is great. Animation is pretty good from the skill level you say you are. Not my field so I can't really say how to improve other than, stars in the back ground or something.

  • Wow!!! you really blow my mind man!!! i can't believe you did all of that!!!

Man, when i was a kid growing up in Van Nuys i used to escape to my little black and white tv in my room to watch battle star galactica. to this day i never knew anyone that really liked the show personally, maybe i did and just didn't know i did, but now i know Zo does!!! woohoo, thanks for all you do, including awaking my inner child:)

  • My inner chid never sleeps!!! LOL!

  • Not bad, the only vid you ever made that I liked. Good Job.

  • Nice work! I like how you incorporated Buck Rogers in with some pretty nifty BSG ideas. I've always been a fan of BSG, and while the new series is nice, it's the original that I grew up with, and hoped they would update. Again, nice work!

  • Hey, Zo! I do 3DS Max, not Maya, so I can't help much with that. However, I do have pretty good handle on After Effects!

  • did you do this?! its incredible.

what song did you use ?????

  • I didn't get into BSG too much. (back in the 80's I was more of a transformers kid) but you should use this program to make a Vblog one of these days.

  • Holy crud, Zo, you're a Christian Conservative Sci-fi-loving aspiring-Animator-and-FX-guru?

    THAT IS SO HOT.

    - a Right-wingin' Animator Woman

  • Good job.

Need to use more texture maps and bump maps. Also, it looks like you are relying on phong shading or scanline to render out with. Try using the raytrace mode. It's slower, but the payout is huge.

    Again, good work.

    Cheers

P.S. - My family keeps you in our prayers.

  • BTW - I see you're a Buck Rogers fan as well. Cool.

    Cheers

  • This is excellent. What program are you using?

    Frank

  • if you EVER need help with 3d let me know, I work professionally in animation, 3d modeling, realism ...etc.

And yes, your work so far looks great, but there is some room for improvement depending on how serious you want to get. Nice work so far!!

  • Like the Update on the Cylon battle stars. Alien-esque. The Vipers look great... I don't recall the Twin engined BSG single seat fighters(?)... what were they called?

    Good looking stuff!

  • not a battle star galctic fan.

but a fan of yours none the less.

I am amazed at what you made

Im used to the political stuff.

    its what I love

none the less what you made was highly impressive.

  • I commend you on a first try, definately impressive. One thing most people neglect when animating are the tiny details. For example, when a spacecraft turns in space, what happens? Physics would dictate that it would continue moving in it's original direction until it built enough momentum to push it the new way. What happens when people are standing still? They fidget and move around. An animation IS going from point a to point b, but to make an animation convincing you gotta think in between.

  • It's pretty sweet for someone just learning how to do this kind of stuff.

  • Pretty cool! Love the music...miss the show :(

  • watch the clip on utube of sci fi channel when they first started-it had all kinds of shows-not like now with entire day(even showing 2nd star trek like 100 other channels)of repeats of self producded crap shows often rip offs of classics like night stalker and battlestar

  • new battlestar show sucked

  • blasphemy, it kicked ass!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • difference of opinion

  • ZOMG!

    Libertarians in space!!! (gasp!)

I'm looking forward to seeing 'ol Ben Cartwright hauling around a bag of dog food (60's & 70's references for all you kiddies out there). Heh.

  • That looks amazing Zo! What program did you use to make this?

  • Some shots with space in the background had no stars or no clearly visible stars, which made it look less realistic. Sci-fi shows sometimes add space dust in the distance (with red, blue, or purple blur), if you want to call it that, for added effect. Also, your ships tend to look too "perfect". They ought to look varied in their texture from one area to another....like slightly dirty, maybe a dent here and there. Overall, it's very impressive. That took a lot of work, I know.

  • This is so neat!

  • Dude, as someone who has done 3D modeling in the past, I have to say I'm really impressed with what you've got here. You've made some impressive ships! Not only that, you textured and rendered them well, something that I'm not quite as good at.

    Props!

  • Nice job!

  • looks pretty good

  • Great graphics, good job, but i really do like your political rants the best.

  • nice job. i'm surprised u have the time

  • You should use the New BSG's theme music. It is far better than the old version

  • The Colonial Anthem remake is actually quite good and true to the sound of the original.

  • I really don't have feedback to offer that will help you further improve your 3D modeling.

But I will be forwarding this to my left wing Battlestar galactica fanatic coworker in the hope of him taking a look at your other videos too!

    Keep up the work Zo!

  • man does that bring back memories of my geek childhood!!! Odama beats Obama anyday.

  • It's said that 90 percent of 3D animation is lighting. Learn accurate lighting, and you will improve this work vastly. For example, use shadows, and perhaps fill in the shadows with some indirect light from a planet. Radiosity or global illumination will lengthen your rendertimes but do wonders for the realism of your images.

  • i thought that was the funniest thing i have ever seen hahaha you guys are too funny .... i almost started to cry from luaghing so hard.

  • Stick to Vloging your face is a lot nicer. Though The animation is pretty cool.

BTW what program are you using?

  • Like aep1974 wrote, lose the still shots. Also, while you'rfe flying around, no reason you can't tell a story and add some sound fx. But very, very good.

  • This is pretty cool, love the music which really fits with the BSG story. I think the best way to improve this would be to add more textures and lighting.

  • super cool!!

  • I know nothing of BSG, but it looks sweet. But the music....man, you just made my week!! What is this???

  • Man, I'm still trying to relocate the music. I picked it up of Myspace like a year ago. Hope I can find 'em. They're an all girl string ensemble from Berkeley I think.

  • Don't know that much about animation, so I can just give you feedback as a viewer. I liked it; I loved the music. The only thing I would comment on is that the still shots of the different ships kind of takes you out of the momentum. I would make the video shorter and just keep in the moving shots. Great job!

  • Live that dream Zo! No quit, no surrender!
