Maggie Gyllenhall did a great job. WAY better than Katie Holmes. Katie didn't seem to care about bruce wayne at all in that film. The way she played the role was very tacky. Maggie added a lot of depth to her character. When her character died I felt like something was missing and the whole film escalated from that moment on. I am pretty sure Katie would not have been able to pull that off in an effective way. kudos to Maggie!

No, she got fired....but the "official" story to allow her to save face was that she made a choice not to participate. Nolan knew - as well as everyone else - that Holmes was the weak link in the first film, which is why she got canned. That said, much as Holmes sucks, I would have preferred to have some continuity. Gyllenhaal is a great actress, but I didn't link her to the character from the first movie, which sucks....
@BigMojoDevil I agree. I hate discontinuity in casting! It really gets under my skin. As much as I think Katie was miscast in the first film I would want her in the second for continuity. I'm not sure if she got fired though. Why would Nolan fire her? You think he'd rather fire her and have discontinuity in his own films?
@jazzmatik I agree, discontinuity sucks. But sometimes it's inevitable. Like during the filming of Revolutions when Gloria Foster (the Oracle) died that really really sucked. She was incredible. But the Wachowski Bros. worked around the story-line to make sense of why she wasn't there. Some people see that as dis-respectful, Nothing wrong with the story being tweaked in order to make more sense. It wouldn't be dis-respectful to re-cast The Joker either. Heath would have wanted that. R.I.P.
MG turned out to be a disappointment. Katie fit the character like a glove.Its easy to believe Bruce and Harvey love her and would fight for her. Holmes and Bale have equal footing and their chemistry is right.

Maggie missed the strength,moral scope,grace and heart Katie had. You're sold with the friendship and romance with Holmes and Bale whereas Maggie hinders it. Her smiley and flirty acting was UnBatman and Ungothamlike.

Katie is an irregular actress. I hated her performance at Begins' ending. It's almost embarrasing. I would like her for the second one for the continuity, but she's so stupid that she didn't want. OK.
Maggie isn't pretty? Ok. It's not a movie about hot girls, it's a movie about people. I believe Maggie's Rachel more than Katie's. With her job, she has to be a hard woman. I think this was the reason for Nolan to cast her instead a just-pretty girl.

@ChrisRedfield08 Although Maggie isnt stunning she is still pretty in some sense and yes i agree with you that he cast her for this role because she is a normal type of woman but i dont think nolan mainly choose her for this role because she is unattractive and he though it would suit the character but because he found her personallity intriguing and representative. Not everything in the world balances on who is good looking or not it is what you do, how you present yourself and who you are.

No, she got fired....but the "official" story to allow her to save face was that she made a choice not to participate. Nolan knew - as well as everyone else - that Holmes was the weak link in the first film, which is why she got canned. That said, much as Holmes sucks, I would have preferred to have some continuity. Gyllenhaal is a great actress, but I didn't link her to the character from the first movie, which sucks....

@BigMojoDevil I agree. I hate discontinuity in casting! It really gets under my skin. As much as I think Katie was miscast in the first film I would want her in the second for continuity. I'm not sure if she got fired though. Why would Nolan fire her? You think he'd rather fire her and have discontinuity in his own films?

@jazzmatik I agree, discontinuity sucks. But sometimes it's inevitable. Like during the filming of Revolutions when Gloria Foster (the Oracle) died that really really sucked. She was incredible. But the Wachowski Bros. worked around the story-line to make sense of why she wasn't there. Some people see that as dis-respectful, Nothing wrong with the story being tweaked in order to make more sense. It wouldn't be dis-respectful to re-cast The Joker either. Heath would have wanted that. R.I.P.

MG turned out to be a disappointment. Katie fit the character like a glove.Its easy to believe Bruce and Harvey love her and would fight for her. Holmes and Bale have equal footing and their chemistry is right.

in my opinion, maggie is attractive, but shes no rachel nichols obviously... the point of TDK isn't like James Bond where Bruce needs to get with some hot brod... now in TDK sequel I would LOVE to see Harley Quinn as the new villain, it just makes sense, lead off of the Joker with his "sidekick"/ lover. Seeing as Heath passed away i hope that they dont bring the joker back becuase that would ruin it all for me, instead have him murdered in arkham or something and then have Harley tell her story

Rachel in Begins was not perfect but at least her history with Bruce,her integrity,her ideals for Gotham were strong. Also she's on par being a moral center. In TDK she's a disgrace. Lastly audience see the friendship and love between Holmes and Bale from BB. In BB Rachel confessed her love,loyalty and pride for Bruce. Maggie just acts cold and cruel all the time. Why does she strut sexily in the balcony or sashay her six and hips interrogating Lau? 1st- TPTB and Maggie's acting kept hammering that she is hot and sexy when she is not.
2nd-the romance was butchered by Maggie by her dud acting,no chemistry and distracting face. Her version totally devoid of intelligence,morals,heart,personality.
3rd- continuity is gone.
4th-emotional core butchered up.If Katie stayed tears are shed because of the audience connection. This is why many feel its ruined and its not just her ugly face.

she screwed up the movie with her bunkness, i know the director was looking for the an awe inspiring event when batman saved harvey dent rather than her... but i actually felt relief when i did the math and realized she couldnt screw any future batman movies up.. anyone know who else was up for the role of rachel? im guessing they casted an ugly rachel so it wouldnt piss the audience off when she had to die.

"Dark Knight" center around the batman & joker character - Rachel is a supporting character. How can her being in the film, screw up the film?It's clear to say that you don't know much about any Batman Movie or movie making at all. I liked both Maggie and Katie. I liked Katie better though because of her spunk and showed a lot more facial expression than Maggie did.

Maggie Gyllenhall is pretty good, look at all the great movies she's done! Like, Donnie Darko for example, where she not only played the role of Elizabeth Darko, his sister, but she really is Jake Gyllenhall's sister! And you know what? Really, I wanted her out of his life. But when Rachel played the part I fell in love with her character, I cried when she died.

I'm personally fine with either actress having played Rachel Dawes, but they should have used the same person for both movies. Changing an actor or voice actor is always incredibly disappointing, at least for me, it takes away from the character.

Nolan could have picked so many hotter A-list honeys - Scarlett Johanson, Jessica Alba, Reese Witherspoon. Was he fucking her on the side? I was really dissappointed when I realized Katie had been replaced with Maggie. Ruined the film a bit. Whenever she comes up I just immediately think "nope, she ain't good enough for Bruce" :( which I think is sad, because she film is a masterpiece.
