Rule 15 applies only to an official race. It is an exception to normal rules of right of way, just as F1 cars are not held to normal rules of the road. The laser on port tack clearly caused the 420 on starboard tack to take evasive action in order to avoid collision. That is a violation except in an official race - which this was not.-

According to the Portsmouth Numbers on the two boats, the Laser beats the 420 in all wind conditions (although the boats are more evenly matched as the wind gets stronger.)

The 420 was doing just fine until they came about and the laser fell upon them. They were already on starboard tack when the moron in the laser violated their right of way and made the 420 take evasive action in order to avoid a collision. The video shows that

A) the 420 crew did not recover well and

B) the Laser guy is a jerk

Okay... you obviously have never read the rules or you simply do not understand them. Rule 15 states that when a boat acquires right of way through their own actions they must give the other boat room to keep clear. Therefore the laser doesn't need to even START to avoid the 420 until it has completed its tack and acquired right of way. The completion of the tack is when the 420 begins to sail on a close hauled course. At this point the Laser is now the keep clear boat and must....

if the 420 roll tacked and didn't get stuck in the leebow it would have kept up np. that being said though if the guy sailing the laser could have handled more bag in his sail he would have been able to keep up in the first straight away

@Adrenaline552 in that sort of wind u dont reli need anymore bag in the sail cos it creates enough lift and if u create a bigger bag there is more drag therefore slower before planing

A laser tends to go faster in lighter winds because of the lack of weight in the laser, and it also surfs much more easily. But in winds of 15+ kts. the 420 is the superior boat, assuming you have an equally skilled crew in the two boats.

420's are faster cuz they have 2 sails while the laser has one sail how about a laser 2 VS a 420 lasers are lighter but 420s sails are higher up

@richman3211 in theory yes but laser are lighter and the crew weight is lighter therefore lasers have the slight advantage (in full rigs anyway). i kept the same speed in a force 3-4 in a full rig as a 420 did with spinnakers and it was the youth sailing team racing at hayling island

Two guys on the 420---one on the Laser. That amounts to about an extra 150 lbs. extra wt. on the 420. Put two on the Laser & you'll get the opposite result.

@pemela it's possible in light wind, i've done it. would never race that way though. the extra weight from the crew helps to heel or reduce heel depending on conditions. the benefit of the extra ~150 pounds outweighs it's speed detriments by far... i guess this is kinda a response to zkenzo too haha
