@EJConrad Zeppelin Bend is regarded by many as being the best way to join ropes, even though it's NOT in Ashley's Book of Knots. The Sheep Bend is more popular because the Sheet Bend is in Ashley's Book of Knots and seems to be one of Ashley's favorites if not THE favorite way to join ropes. Also, the Sheep Bend is part of the Bowline family. So, if you know the Bowline, you know the Sheet Bend. They're both great bends. Know both.
jnkfws2e has the best video of this knot, grufrock...you tied it fine I'm just saying for people that aren't familiar it would probably be easier to learn with the 6 and the 9 to start
This knot is awkward no matter how many times you tie it. It would be a lot easier for people to understand how the knot comes together if you started with the "6" and the "9" which I believe someone else has done.
@Tonydawopful Turn the volume down. This music is great for drinking ale by, but bad for concentrating on a new knot.
Not knocking grufrock his method works for him, but the one in the video below is far easier to remember IMO. Maybe because it uses a clover method and I'm Irish is what makes it easier for me, but once you learn it this way it's easier than a bowline. I've tied far more bowlines than Zepplins, but since I learned it this way the Zep is easier to tie.
I like this knot, it is almost THE perfect knot for reliably linking 2 similar ropes together that only affects the ropes strength as few as possible.
Only problem is, you almost need 4 hands to tighten it up.
I also would recommend to try tying this knot with 2 loops instead of pulling both ends trough the middle at the end: this way, the knot can even more easily be opened and when you do so, neither ends will overlap, meaning you will have 2 lose ends in your hands.
Right, but the alpine butterfly bend is like cutting the loop and leaving two ends. Some say it is on par with this knot, but it seems a little easier to tighten and tie properly.
Sweet video! I've never tied this knot b4 and had it by the fourth try. This is an awesome and simple way to tie. Thanks

I like this better than the 69 method. I had to watch a few times to get it right. Thanks!

What are the advantages of this knot over a single or double sheet bend? Sheet bend is fast and really easy to untie after a heavy load.

@Tonydawopful There's a bunch of different ways to tie this knot, this is by far the best that I've found. Show me a better one.

@grufrock Thanks for the vid. Never tied the knot b4, had it figured out quick. definitely going to b part of my toolbox!

Thanks for the video, a much better way to tie this bend than the set-piece method you find elsewhere.

has anybody compared this with an alpine butterfly bend?
O1toolsteel 2 years ago
there is not much to compare. They serve completely different purposes.
joeseth05 2 years ago
How so? They are both pretty similar, being made of two overhand knots. When would you use one over the other?
O1toolsteel 2 years ago
zeppelin bend is used to link 2 ropes
alpine butterly knot is used to make a loop on a single rope usually without using either end.

on second thought I think that the zeppelin bend is easier to tie.
O1toolsteel 2 years ago
@O1toolsteel so you try to compare how easy each knot can be tied. This is a very subjective mesure that also depends on circumstances.

Woow, thank you...
I can finally see how to tie this, fast hehe..

Great method of tying a great knot.
Wonder why more climbers don't use this knot? Strong, secure, much easier to untie than a double fisherman's bend after it takes a strain.
The beginer's method is easy to learn but clumsy to tie. This method is my new favorite.
Thanks again for sharing it. Nice music too.

Nice bend. Will it untie after loading?

what is this knot used for? is it more for climbing or for rigging? Thanks
