@curlybobz our top 5 biggest pests, beginning with the most irritating first and working our way down would be... People, raccoons, mice, bats and skunks, cant kill trespassers but the thought has occurred to me. close the door to keep raccoons out, dryer sheets on anything level the mice can walk on (they cant stand the smell and either can i) close the door for the bats too, and so-forth with the skunks... Don't lock the door or trespassers will chainsaw your cabin to trespass
I'm going to do this. You did a pretty good job. As good of a job as i would hope to do on my log cabin. IT seems pretty basic to me. I worked and as a arborist for a while also. So i know the characteristics of different wood and hard and softwoods. I have also worked on houses since I was 13 with my dad.
@wildeturkey03 i hope you watch more of our videos and subscribe so you can see our retaining wall, our drainage issues and repairs and all sorts of log cabining excellence
This is gonna sound silly i guess but I've heard that also using tobacco leaves along with the cedar bark. Reason being is that insects will not eat through tobacco leaves. This is what I've heard..
Also.. I sprayed my entire log cabin with Thompsons water seal to help protect the wood.. was that a good idea??
@tscotty32 wow, i did not get notified from youtube that you responded... sorry for the delay. anything to protect your logs is a good idea, the most importent thing is to have a good roof. i would like to see your cabin.
using mud is much faster & seals better as long as it doesn't get wet too much from the roof. i would like to see how the roof is build . might be he is doing right way...it's depends
LOL, Yeah straws of wheats, grass will do the good jobs too. Around my area, there were many cobs but i think they back then cobs are fed to the animals.. i think..you know what ever you can seal the between the log and able to keep that for long that's the answer. there aren't that many right or wrong. good luck. you must be having a great time of your life !!
LOL! Okey, that's what it called? lol & i was putting that crap without knowing it all this time! this is funny! many construction sites call it different names..i can't even keep it up!!lol
we mixed moss and other organic material in our cob mixture for our chinking, but the moss supply was not very abundant or close to the cabin site.. thank you very much for the excellent comment.
Great video's do you seal the cabin also from the inside???
I am from Limburg in the Netherlands, our ancesters used to build almost the same way. They used clay, straw and urin from cows and they mixed it , and build with it.
Some houses are still standing for over 300 years, we call it "vakwerk".
it has a floor, it's a dirt floor but hey, its a floor ;-) My vision was to build a 17th century pioneer period cabin. My next cabin will probably be much like Ellen's cabin in Alaska but with a 10000 square foot bunker built right under it but I would prefer a cave.
im gonna need to see that! that sounds awsome i bean working bunker out in my head about the best wait to build them. maybe tomarrow we can talk on aim
